A trilogy of Documentary Series on Northern Ireland Conflict - Provos, Loyalists and Brits. Although this BBC Documentary was made several years ago, in light of Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestine / West Bank and the atrocities committed in Gaza in January, it shows that Peace can be reached, but only every group have equal rights.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN

BBC documentary series looking at the history of the IRA and Sinn Fein over the past 30 years.

Episodes:
* BORN AGAIN  (23/09/1997)
* SECOND FRONT  (30/09/1997)
* SECRET WAR  (07/10/1997)
* ENDGAME  (14/10/1997)

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: BORN AGAIN
Documentary looking at the changes and rise in the Provisional IRA in Northern Ireland from 1969 on. Considers the events of civil unrest in the late 1960s, the ideology and actions of the leaders of the IRA then, which underwent a significant change after the attacks by loyalists and B Specials on Catholics and Nationalists and their homes. Looks at the background of the deployment of British troops, and how they were first welcomed, but later viewed as the enemy. Includes interviews with many older IRA members who talk about their motivations and aims, and the escalation into shooting and bombings, especially after the events of Bloody Sunday.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECOND FRONT
Looks into what was discussed at secret meetings between the British authorities and Provisional IRA during the 1970s, and how Britian may have countenanced withdrawal from Northern Ireland. Examines the emergence of Sinn Fein as a political force and the bombing campaigns both in the Province and the British mainland. Also examines the prison protests in the Maze prison, and the hunger strikes, and the effects of the deaths of Bobby Sands and other hunger strikers.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECRET WAR
Concentrates on the 1980s and the relaunch of a campaign by the IRA after the death of the hunger strikers. Looks at the increase in heavy weaponry purchased and the funding and supply lines and the IRA\'s keeness to get hold of surface-to-air missiles to shoot down army helicopters. It also goes into the emergence of IRA informants and \"supergrasses\" and the effect they had on operations.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: ENDGAME
The final episode focuses on how the military stalemate of the late 80s created a context whereby the Sinn Fein leadership could persuade the IRA Army Council that the final phase of the struggle had to be political. It also shows how the stalemate paved the way for a remarkable series of secret negotiations between the Government and the IRA which made possible the cessation of 1994. The programme also describes how, despite the end of the ceasefire and the subsequent Canary Wharf and Manchester bombings, backstage efforts for peace continued, resulting in a renewed IRA ceasefire and the current all-party talks.

LOYALISTS

Documentary series giving an intimate account of the lives of loyalist paramilitaries.

Episodes:
* NO SURRENDER  (21/02/1999)
* RETURNING THE SERVE  (28/02/1999)
* WAR AND PEACE  (07/03/1999)

NO SURRENDER
Documentary series presented by Peter Taylor, about the origins and evolution of the loyalist paramilitary movement in
Northern Ireland.

RETURNING THE SERVE
In the late 1970s the conflict in Northern Ireland reached new levels of brutality. Among those caught up in the violence was UVF member Billy Giles, who retaliated against IRA acts by murdering a Catholic workmate.

WAR AND PEACE
Former Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) prisoners Gerry Spence and Bobby Philpott claim that Loyalist violence in the early nineties made the IRA realise they could not win. Peter Taylor reveals the true face of the Loyalist paramilitaries and assesses the prospects for peace in the face of continuing sectarian tensions.

BRITS

Three-part documentary on the role of the British armed forces in Northern Ireland,
made by journalist Peter Taylor. Continues the history of the Troubles Taylor told in the
earlier series PROVOS and LOYALISTS.

Episodes:
* The SECRET WAR  (17/05/2000)
* SHOOT TO KILL  (24/05/2000)
* HOLDING THE LINE  (31/05/2000)

The SECRET WAR
This programme focuses on the period 1969-1975. As the IRA launched its terror campaign in the early 1970s, Britain realised that intelligence gathering would be the key to countering their threat. Included in this part are revelations about the covert operations carried out by the army, including the story of how the security services discovered that the IRA had bugged the army\'s Northern Ireland headquarters and how they captured key IRA figures involved with the bugging.

SHOOT TO KILL
Examination of a series of incidents from the mid-seventies where security forces reacted with speed and
aggression. Members of Special Branch, MI6 and the army talk about the dangers of life in the war against
the IRA. In their attempts to fight fire with fire did the agents of the crown sometimes go beyond the limits
acceptable in a democractic state?

HOLDING THE LINE
Third and final part of the series investigating British undercover operations in Northern Ireland. Reveals
how pressure from British intelligence services helped to bring the IRA to the negotiating table. Also looks
at the prospect for a lasting peace.

Bustin' Down The Door (2008)

During the winter of 1975 in Hawaii, surfing was shaken to its core. A group of young surfers from Australia and South Africa sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to create a sport, a culture, and an industry that is today worth billions of dollars and has captured the imagination of the world. With a radical new approach and a brash colonial attitude, these surfers crashed headlong into a culture that was not ready for revolution.

Surfing was never to be the same again.
Seeders: 1
Leeches: 3

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B & Back Again) is a 1975 book by the American
artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987). The book is an assemblage of self-consciously ironic
"quotable quotes" about love, beauty, fame, work, sex, time, death, economics, success,
and art, among other topics, by the "Prince of Pop".

Winstanley is the title of a film made in 1975 in the UK by Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo, based on the 1961 David Caute novel Comrade Jacob.Runtime 2 hrs 20 minsWinstanley B/W 95 minutesIt Happened Here Again 45 minutes (color)640x480From the Wiki: This deals with some of the life story of the 17th Century social reformer and writer Gerrard Winstanley, who, along with a small band of followers known as the Diggers tried to establish a self-sufficient farming community on common land at St. George's Hill near Cobham, Surrey. This was one of the world's first socialistic living experiments which was copied elsewhere in England during the time of the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, but was quickly suppressed and in the end left only a legacy of ideas to inspire later generations of socialist theorists. Great efforts were made to produce a film of high historical accuracy. Armour used was actual armour from the 1640s, borrowed from the Tower of London. Directed by Kevin Brownlow Andrew Mollo Produced by Andrew Mollo Kevin Brownlow Written by David Caute (novel) Kevin Brownlow This torrent includes the featurette Making-Of film on Winstanley called “It Happened Here Again”The torrent is given from the new DVD release mastered from the original film. The dvd contains more information and extras. Encourage your library to purchase this film for it's historic value.Those who appreciate the work of Peter Watkins (La Commune Paris 1871,Colloden, The War Game, Freethinker, and The Universal Clock etc) will see similarities in this work.Notes written September 8, 2009

Legacy of Torture: The War Against the Black Liberation Movement

Program Info
"The same people who tried to kill me in 1973 are the same people who are here
today, trying to destroy me. I mean it literally. I mean there were people from
the forces of the San Francisco Police Department who participated in harrassment,
torture and my interrogation in 1973
...none of these people have ever been brought to trial. None of these people
have ever been charged with anything. None of these people have ever been
questioned about that."
-John Bowman, former Black Panther, passed away December 2006

In 2005 several former members of the Black Panther Party were held in contempt
and jailed for refusing to testify before a Sanc Francisco Grand Jury
investigating a police shooting that took place in 1971. The government alleged
that Black radical groups were involved in the 34-year old case in which two men
armed with shotguns attacked the Ingleside Police Station resulting in the death
of a police sergeant and the injuring of a civilian clerk.

In 1973, 13 alleged "Black militants" were arrested in New Orleans, purportedly
in connection with the San Francisco events. Some of them were tortured for
several days by law enforcement authorities, in striking similarity to the
horrors visited upon detainees in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib.

In 1975, a Federal Court in San Francisco threw out all of the evidence obtained
in New Orleans.

The two lead San Francisco Police Department investigators from over 30 years
ago, along with FBI agents, have re-opened the case. Rather than submit to
proceedings they felt were abusive of the law and the Constitution, five men
chose to stand in contempt of court and were sent to jail. They were released
when the Grand Jury term expired, but have been told by prosecutors that "ït
isn't over yet."

    Tensions Rise in Latin America over US Military Plan to Use Three Bases in Colombia
    The Colombian government has agreed to grant US forces the use of three Colombian military bases for South American anti-drug operations. The move has heightened tensions between Colombia, the largest recipient of US military aid in the Americas, and its neighbors, particularly Venezuela and Ecuador. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned that the US Army could “invade” his country from Colombia. [includes rush transcript]

    Parole Hearing to Be Held Tuesday for Imprisoned Native American Activist Leonard Peltier
    The sixty-four-year-old activist has been in prison for thirty-three years and is now being held at the Lewisburg prison in Pennsylvania. Peltier was convicted of killing two FBI agents during a shootout on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1975. At his last hearing, the Parole Commission originally denied Peltier parole in 1993 based on their finding that he “participated in the premeditated and cold blooded execution of those two officers.” However, the Parole Commission has since said it “recognizes that the prosecution has conceded the lack of any direct evidence that [Peltier] personally participated in the executions of the two FBI agents.” Peltier has long maintained his innocence and is widely considered a political prisoner who was not granted a fair trial. The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy
by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt

What is the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. foreign policy—and is it in America’s national interest?
Publishers Weekly
Expanding on their notorious 2006 article in the London Review of Books, the authors increase the megatonnage of their explosive claims about the malign influence of the pro-Israel lobby on the U.S. government. Mearsheimer and Walt, political scientists at the University of Chicago and Harvard, respectively, survey a wide coalition of pro-Israel groups and individuals, including American Jewish organizations and political donors, Christian fundamentalists, neo-con officials in the executive branch, media pundits who smear critics of Israel as anti-Semites and the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, which they characterize as having an "almost unchallenged hold on Congress." This lobby, they contend, has pressured the U.S. government into Middle East policies that are strategically and morally unjustifiable: lavish financial subsidies for Israel despite its occupation of Palestinian territories; needless American confrontations with Israel's foes Syria and Iran; uncritical support of Israel's 2006 bombing of Lebanon, which "violated the laws of war"; and the Iraq war, which "almost certainly would not have occurred had [the Israel lobby] been absent." The authors disavow conspiracy mongering, noting that the lobby's activities constitute legitimate, if misguided, interest-group politics, "as American as apple pie." Considering the authors' academic credentials and the careful reasoning and meticulous documentation with which they support their claims, the book is bound to rekindle the controversy. (Sept.)
Biography
John J. Mearsheimer is the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and the co-director of the Program on International Security Policy at the University of Chicago. He has published several books, including The Tragedy of Great Power Politics.

Stephen M. Walt is the Belfer Professor of International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and was academic dean of the Kennedy School from 2002 to 2006. He is the author of Taming American Power: The Global Response to U.S. Primacy, among other books. http://walt.foreignpolicy.com/

South Vietnamese leaders believed that America would never let them go down to defeat -- a belief that died as North Vietnamese tanks smashed into Saigon on April 30, 1975, and the long war ended with South Vietnam's surrender.
Seeders: 35
Leeches: 12

Unforgotten - 25 Years After Willowbrook

Category: Documentary
Description:
It was a nightmare that shocked not only New York, but all of America. The public outcry about the Willowbrook School (on Staten Island) for people with developmental disabilities resulted from Geraldo Rivera\'s award-winning series on WABC-TV in 1972. Viewers were stunned by coverage of residents with mental retardation and developmental disabilities sprawled naked on feces covered floors, being forced to eat their meals in two to three minutes, living and breathing filth. Willowbrook\'s idea of a shower was to gather 60 residents in a tiled room and hose them down. The public\'s outrage was so intense, that by 1975, a Federal Court ordered that institutional care be phased out and replaced with community based settings. The mentally retarded would no longer be shuffled off into \"lunatic asylums.\" Instead, they would be given every opportunity to lead as constructive a life as possible.
Seeders: 1
Leeches: 2
