155 Killed in Double Suicide Bombing in Baghdad
In Baghdad, the death toll from Sunday’s synchronized suicide car bombings has risen to 155. More than 500 people were also injured. It was the deadliest bombing in Iraq in two years. The blasts targeted the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Public Works and the Baghdad provincial government. Dozens of civil servants were among the dead. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki visited the site of the bombings and blamed al-Qaeda and former remnants of Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime. He said the attacks would not affect the political process or parliamentary elections due in January. US troops have been called in to help with the investigation. [includes rush transcript]

Showdown in Chicago: Protesters Greet American Bankers Association Conference
When the American Bankers Association scheduled their annual meeting in Chicago for this week, they probably weren’t expecting the reception they’ve received. Instead of a quiet convention in a downtown hotel, the ABA has been greeted by a parallel gathering of thousands of people in what organizers call the “Showdown in Chicago.” Spearheaded by the group National People’s Action, organizers have tried to bring together a cross-section of Americans affected by the financial meltdown, including homeowners, renters, farmers, workers and retirees. The Showdown kicked off Sunday when protesters entered the lobby of the hotel where the ABA delegates are gathering. [includes rush transcript]

100 Days of Resistance: Al Jazeera's Avi Lewis Reports from Honduras
In Honduras, the conflict between the coup regime and supporters of the ousted president Manuel Zelaya remains at a standstill. Talks broke down last week after the coup regime refused to drop its objection to Zelaya’s return to office. Zelaya has accused the regime of trying to drag out negotiations until the presidential elections it plans to hold next month. Zelaya’s supporters are boycotting the elections, and the international community has refused to recognize them. The Canadian journalist and Al Jazeera English correspondent Avi Lewis recently traveled to Honduras for a rare look at the grassroots movement against the coup regime. This is an excerpt of his report, which aired on the Al Jazeera English program Fault Lines. [includes rush transcript]

Aljazeera - I Knew Boris Yeltsin - 22-10-09

Category: Documentary
Description:
Boris Yeltsin became Russia's first president and democratically elected leader in 1991. The darling of the West, to many he appeared as a revolutionary who had brought freedom to the world's largest nation after 70 years of communist dictatorship.

Yet by the time he left office he was deeply unpopular, having disappointed both his people and his Western backers.

From humble beginnings in the Siberian countryside, Yeltsin rose through the ranks of his local Communist party, become regional chief of Sverdlovsk (modern-day Yekaterinburg) in 1976.

He soon gained a reputation as a reformer, willing to challenge Soviet orthodoxy and introduce some degree of accountability.

In 1985 he brought his flair as a populist to the Soviet capital as mayor of Moscow.

Initially a supporter of Gorbachev's perestroika policy, Yeltsin became increasingly outspoken, eventually breaking with the party entirely, and establishing his own power base.

Yeltsin played a key role in the destruction of the Soviet Union, but as president, he soon squandered his once immense popularity, presiding over a traumatic period of economic collapse, widespread corruption, and war in Chechnya.

He used the rhetoric of democracy when it suited his aims, but soon took on the more autocratic style of leadership familiar from the Soviet period.

The pressures of power took a clear physical toll on Yeltsin.

He became notorious for his alleged alcoholism and increasingly eccentric public behavior.

After leaving office voluntarily in 1999, he largely withdrew from public life - a sad and broken figure to many.

Al Jazeera explores the trajectory of the life of this deeply divisive leader through those who knew him personally - including schoolmates, colleagues and political rivals.
Seeders: 1
Leeches: 0

Al jazeera - I Knew Idi Amin

Category: Documentary
Description:
Idi Amin was one of Africa's most notorious leaders.

He began his career in the British Colonial Army and with virtually no education, rose from chef's assistant to the most powerful position in the country.

Through a combination of brute force and the encouragement of countries like Britain, he became the president of Uganda in 1971.

His ruthlessness earned him the nickname, the Killer of Kampala, and over time the international support he once had, evaporated.

Amin's rule was marred by human rights abuses, political oppression, ethnic persecution and the expulsion of the country's entire Asian population.

To his political opponents he was ruthless and unforgiving, and many of those who spoke up against him eventually turned up dead in the streets.

Amin's presidency came to an inglorious end in 1979. He was exiled to Saudi Arabia, where he died in 2003.

Even in death, Amin's ghost still hovers over Uganda, and his life was recently immortalised in the Hollywood blockbuster The Last King of Scotland.

Al Jazeera's I Knew Idi Amin, interviews those closest to him. From his son and daughter to his former health minister, who witnessed some of Amin's most heinous acts.
Seeders: 1
Leeches: 1

Media 'hotspots' are the places where a free press is almost non-existent and independent media are either silenced by government forces, overpowered by state-owned broadcasters, or shut out of conflict zones, unable to report the story at all.

We start this week's report with a look back at the coverage from Gaza - the media blockade, and the spin from within the war zone that was designed to mask the truth.

This year also saw Sudan and the conflict in Darfur back in the media spotlight.

When the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan, for war crimes, media coverage of the story was divided.

The Arab world's reporting talked about the court's double standards, one set of rules for an Arab-African leader and another for Western politicians.

But with the world's media almost entirely shut out of Sudan and the Sudanese government picking up their PR game
, where do the facts end and the speculation begin about what is really happening in the troubled Darfur region?

We also take you behind the coverage and the spin with five things you need to know about the Sudanese media.

Journalists struggled to tell both sides of the story in Sri Lanka
In part two of our show, we turn our attention to Sri Lanka and the struggle that journalists faced when trying to tell both sides of the story during the recent conflict and its aftermath.

As the Sri Lankan government claimed final victory over the Tamil Tiger movement, a separate battle with the media was also being played out that saw censorship, intimidation and news blackouts become the norm.

While reporting from the island was a struggle for the international media, Sri Lankan journalists also came under fire from the authorities, for speaking out against their government's military action.

Our report will also look at the attacks against independent voices in Sri Lanka, and the influence of the government on the country's media outlets.

Next week on our special feature series on media "hotspots", we will look at the steps the North Korean authorities are taking to control their media image.

Walter Cronkite (1916-2009): Legendary CBS Anchorman Was Critical of Media Consolidation, Wars in Vietnam and Iraq
The legendary CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite died at the age of ninety-two at his home in New York on Friday. For nearly twenty years, Cronkite’s broadcast was a nightly staple in millions of American homes from 1962 until he left CBS Evening News in 1981. Praise for Cronkite’s work and legacy is all over the news, but few in the mainstream media have mentioned what many consider Cronkite’s most important news moment. In February 1968, soon after he returned from a trip to Vietnam, Cronkite cast doubt on the war and helped turn the tide of American public opinion against it. [includes rush transcript]

NAACP Turns 100: The History and Future of the Nation's Oldest and Largest Civil Rights Organization
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP, the country’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, had its 100th anniversary celebrations last week. The biggest event of the week was President Obama’s address in Harlem Thursday night. Thousands were in the audience as the President gave his first major speech on race since taking office. We take a look at the history and future of the NAACP with longtime NAACP board chairman Julian Bond and with historian Patricia Sullivan, author of Lift Every Voice: The NAACP and the Making of the Civil Rights Movement.
We focus on double standards in the US media when it comes to covering the so-called 'war on terror'.

There has been a lack of consistency in what state-side news is reporting, and a lack of confidence in their coverage as a result.

We take a look at the willingness of Barack Obama, the US president, to suppress certain images, and the US media's reticence in even using the word "torture".

Salah Khadr also explores the celebratory coverage of the release of journalist Roxana Saberi from an Iranian prison in May this year, in comparison to their silence about foreign reporters held by the US.

Pentagon propaganda

Often the standard by which reporters measure themselves editorially and creatively, the Times has, since 9/11, found itself under fire for some well-publicized failings in reporting, that had real implications on security issues.

Meenakshi Ravi takes a look at the paper that promises "all the news that is fit to print" and the media war over alleged Pentagon propaganda and the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

However, in April 2008, far from being accused of acting as a mouthpiece for the Pentagon, the New York Times exposed a pundit program that put retired, pro-Pentagon generals on air across the US media networks.

The Pentagon abolished the program after the Times article was published – and the news channels and papers that played along with the propaganda game ignored the story.

The Listening Post explores the story of the Pentagon pundits, and the picture it painted about the US military's relationship with the news media.

Sir David Frost has been anchoring a news program Frost Over the World since 2006 but until just recently, virtually no one in Washington could watch. The problem? The legendary journalist – best known for his incisive interviews with former president Richard Nixon – works for al Jazeera’s English channel and cable providers only began carrying it in the U S capital on July 1, while over 100 countries have watching for a long time.

On Reliable Sources, Frost told Howard Kurtz why Al Jazeera English may have gotten a bad rap from its association with its Arabic counterpart, famous – or infamous, depending on your point of view – for carrying many of the video and audio messages from Osama Bin Laden.

"Every company… delighted at those Osama bin Laden tapes. You see, they'd drop them through the letter box. They seem to be dropping them through our [Al Jazeera English's] letter boxes now. But from that, I mean, once they decided to use them, and there are lots they didn't use. But I mean once they decided to use them, so did the BBC, so did ITV, so did CBS, NBC, ABC. Everyone wanted them. And they just happened to be the lucky recipients," Frost said.

"Al Jazeera English came along and it immediately, people see it, they realize that it's independent, that it's international, that it's for the south as well as the north. And you can see it's not about Osama bin Laden any more than any other network is."

Witness - Under the Neon (Las Vegas' homeless living beneath Casinos in underground tunnels & storm-drains)

Las Vegas is the city of glitter, glamour and gambling. And if you believe the hype, a place to get rich quick.

In just one year, the Las Vegas casinos can rake in more than $6 billion in revenue. And yet, in the state of Nevada, home to Las Vegas, one in ten people are unemployed and there are between 11,000 and 14,000 homeless people in Las Vegas itself.

But the homeless are kept well out of sight of the all-important tourists. You can even be arrested for feeding a homeless person in a park.

Quite a number of them have made their homes in the tunnels and storm drains right under the busy highways and casinos.

Under the Neon is an extraordinary journey below the surface of the bright lights of Las Vegas, to meet some of the people who are battling to make some kind of home under the streets of gold.

From Publishers Weekly:
In 2002, as managing editor of the alternative weekly, Las Vegas CityLife, O'Brien was intrigued when a murderer eluded police by vanishing into the Vegas flood-control system. After O'Brien and CityLife contributor Josh Ellis explored half a dozen storm drains, their adventures attracted such attention on the Internet that the publication's Web site scored a million hits in a day.

Continually contrasting the sparkling casinos above with the dank, cobwebbed catacombs below, the observant O'Brien writes with a noirish flair, but his compassion is also evident as he illuminates the lives of these shadowy subterranean dwellers.
