Man in the Sand (1999)

Category: Documentary
Description:
Man in the Sand is a 1999 music documentary that chronicles the collaboration between Billy Bragg and Wilco, which involved the musicians creating new music to accompany lyrics that were written decades earlier by folk singer Woody Guthrie. The project, which was organized by Woody's daughter Nora, spawned two albums: Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998, and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, released in 2000.

The film begins with Bragg in Guthrie's original hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma, and follows along as Bragg travels to other Guthrie haunts in Texas, California, and finally, New York. Much of the documentary is also spent at the recording sessions in Chicago (December 1997) and Dublin, Ireland (January 1998). Most of the tracks from both albums were recorded at these sessions.
Seeders: 2
Leeches: 1

Those who have seen the recent torrent called Winstanley by Kevin Brownlow will enjoy
this first effort by Brownlow and Andrew Mollon

Excerpted from the Wiki:

The film was directed by Kevin Brownlow, who later became a prominent film historian, and Andrew Mollo, who was to become a leading military historian. Brownlow developed the concept of the film when he was eighteen, in 1956. He turned to Mollo, a sixteen-year-old history buff, to help him with the design of costumes and sets. Mollo was intrigued by the project, and became his collaborator.

The film was in the making for the next eight years, which the Guinness Book of World Records (as of 2003) calls the longest ever production schedule. It was shot in black and white on 16 mm film, giving it a grainy, newsreel feel. The audio quality (and lighting) on the opening reel is rather poor, which makes the dialog difficult to follow for the first few minutes. It had a cast of hundreds, all volunteers, with only two professional actors among them (Sebastian Shaw, Reginald Marsh). (A number of the extras in the film were members of British science fiction fandom, and a portion was previewed at a science fiction convention in Peterborough.

end excerpt.

;; Using volunteers in the manner that Peter Watkins does drew me to this film and my local library had purchased it. ;; At the time I knew nothing of Brownlow until the re-release of Winstanley (2009).

;; Though not a do it youself effort in the practical sense of the term It Happened Here shows what can be done with minimal production equipment. The subject of occupation is current. A comparison of "It Happened Here" with the recent television series "Jericho" is recommended.

A further exploration of how "newsreel" footage was used in the depiction of war is in "The Victors" (1963) by Carl Foreman and currently available on torrents. For me it is quite telling the difference between what Hollywood stars did in "The Victors" as compared with any crop of Young Lions today. It's not only telling, it's disheartening. "The Victors" is one of the great anti-war films.

Viva Zapatero! is a documentary by Sabina Guzzanti telling her side of the story regarding the conflict with Silvio Berlusconi over a late-night TV political satire show broadcast on RAI-3.

The show, RAIot (a play on the name of the Italian state public TV: RAI, and the English word riot), lampooned prime minister Berlusconi. Since it wasn't considered a satirical show, but a political one, it was cancelled after the first episode.

Story

The TV broadcasting of the satirical program RAIot was censored in November 2003 after the comedienne, Sabina Guzzanti, made outspoken criticism of the Berlusconi media empire. Mediaset, one of Berlusconi's companies, sued the Italian state broadcasting company RAI because of the Guzzanti show asking for 20 million Euro for "damages" and from November 2003 she was forced to appear only in theatres around Italy.

After the show was cancelled, Guzzanti tried fruitlessly to get it reinstated, in spite of the fact that a judge dismissed the case that initially resulted in the termination of the show. Her struggle however, did result in this film. The documentary openly reveals censorship laws that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is presently imposing on the country's freedom of speech. It is seen by some as Italy's "Fahrenheit 9/11."[citation needed]

In August 2005, it was the sleeper hit of the Venice International Film Festival, receiving a 15-minute standing ovation after its premiere screening. When it opened in Italian theaters, over 200,000 people went to see it in the first week. Its success resulted in an invitation to the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

Category: Documentary
Description:
Let's take small steps towards a healthier life and a healthier you!
Food can be your best friend! Discover how you can Detox, Lose Weight, Reverse Diabetes, Conquer Cancer, Beat Heart Disease, Ditch Depression and more using a nutritional approach. It’s not as hard as you think.

Food Matters is a hard hitting, fast paced look at our current state of health. Despite the billions of dollars of funding and research into new so-called cures we continue to suffer from a raft of chronic ills and every day maladies. Patching up an over-toxic and over indulgent population with a host of toxic therapies and nutrient sparse foods is definitely not helping the situation. Add on the high demands made upon our already over-burdened health care system and it s little wonder that doctors and health care practitioners have less and less time to teach people about how to eat and live well, precisely the information that could prevent people from being there in the first place.

Food Matters hosts several world leaders in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer. The film sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide sickness industry and points out that not every problem requires costly, major medical attention and reveals many alternative therapies that can be more effective, more economical and less harmful than conventional medical treatments. Find out what works, what doesn't and what's killing you. Becoming informed about the choices you have for you and your family's health could save your life.

Anthony Fabian directs this drama based on the true story of Sandra Laing (Sophie Okonedo/Ella Ramangwane), a black girl born to two white Afrikaaner parents (Sam Neill and Alice Krige) in South Africa during the apartheid era. A genetic throwback to the mixed blood of previous generations of her family, Sophie's skin colour causes problems for her bigoted father and her all-white school, which expels her despite her family's attempts to have her classified as white. Later in life, Sandra again causes shockwaves when she decides to marry a black man and have herself reclassified as black.
Seeders: 91
Leeches: 33

The Story They Wouldn't Tell You

Around the world, computer hackers are being portrayed as the newest brand of terrorists. This is a story of a hacker named Kevin Mitnick, imprisoned without bail for nearly five years. Freedom Downtime tries to uncover the reasons why the authorities are so scared of Mitnick as well as define what exactly he did. Surprisingly, no real evidence is ever presented by t he authorities to back up the sensationalist claims in mass media. But when a Hollywood studio decides to make a movie about Mitnick's life through the eyes of one of his accusers, hackers turn to activism to get their message out. Through interviews with relatives, friends, lawyers, and experts in the computer and civil liberties arena, a picture of a great injustice becomes apparent. A cross-country journey uncovers some realities of the hacker culture as well as the sobering fact that so many technically young adept people are being imprisoned.
