Unreported World ~ Cambodia: Selling the Killing Fields 2009 03 29 Ch. 4 233 mbs /24:16.960 Unreported World reveals how 30 years on from the fall of the Khmer Rouge, and at the same time as Pol Pot's accomplices are being put on trial for war crimes, Cambodia's people are once again being brutally driven from their land. This time, however, it is capitalism, not communism, that is displacing them - as growing numbers of tourists fuel a property boom that is having devastating results. Reporter Jenny Kleeman and Producer Andy Wells report from Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, where land is now worth three times as much as two years ago. They're investigating allegations that the Cambodian authorities are behind a policy of violent evictions of the country's poor from their homes. Their journey begins in the slum district of Dey Krahorm, which is home to 120 families and right next to central Phnom Penh's plush new hotels, embassies and new National Assembly. ... Kleeman and Wells move on Sianoukville on Cambodia's coast. Its white sand beaches are an increasing draw for foreign tourists, but the people of Kom Penh Chit fishing village tell Kleeman they are barred from the adjoining beach because it's been sold off to developers. ... The team moves on to Andong, a 'resettlement village' where the government has relocated people it has evicted from the capital. In a chilling echo of the suffering of those evicted from Phnom Penh by the Khmer Rouge, they find the residents living under tarpaulin in appalling conditions...ags, which litter the site.... http://www.channel4.com/programmes/unreported-w...es-2009/episode-2 Unreported World S17E02 - Cambodia Selling the Killing Fields (20 March 2009) CAPPER: geclipse SOURCE: THEBOX.BZ~http://www.thebox.bz/details.php?id=71232 shunster other active torrents/uploads at: http://www.bt-chat.com/browse.php?category=11

Program Info
Couldn't find a description of this video, so here's a bio of Pol Pot:
Full Name:&nbsp; Mr. Saloth Sar
Date of Birth: May 19, 1928
Place of Birth: Kompong Thom province, Cambodia
Died: April 15, 1998
Place of Death: Cambodia-Thailand border near Anlong Veng
Classification: Leaders &amp; Revolutionaries

Short Biography of Pol Pot

Known for brutality and the murdering of millions of people in Cambodia, Pol Pot became an international
criminal when he took government as head of the Khmer Rouge. While he was never brought to trial for the
charges against him during his rule, he and his followers took the country into the deepest pits of despair.

As a child, the young Saloth Sar, as Pol Pot was originally named, lived well off of his father, who was a
wealthy land owner more than he was a farmer. Pol Pot in Cambodian literally means Politique Potentielle, in French,
or Potential Politics &ndash; a form of extreme communism in which Pot religiously believed and changed his name to match.
Pol, his brother, sister, and a cousin were favored be the Kingdom Monivong, which entitled them to some privileges
not bestowed upon other Cambodian families. While living in the royal palace for a time, he witnessed what feudalistic
power was dealt. During this time, Pol Pot attended various French language schools, but was either not bright enough
or simply did not try to pass his classes. When he failed at earning his diploma and later becoming a monk, his family
sent him to France to study, where he also failed academically. Politics struck his fancy and he joined the French
Communist Party in the early 1950s. Following, he gained some military know-how in Yugoslavia before returning to Cambodia.

By the early 1960s, Pol Pot began teaching in a private school in Phnom Penh and began a leadership role in Cambodia&rsquo;s
Communist Party. When he visited China, he saw how the Cultural Revolution controlled and affected the entire country.
With support from the Communist government there, he went back to Cambodia and with an ignited fervor to bring Cambodia
to utopian standards &ndash; a na&iuml;ve ideology that became his obsession.

In the Cambodian coup of 1970, which was in support of American involvement in the country, the Khmer Rouge
(or Cambodian Communists) began attacking the Cambodian army. When the U.S. began bombing other parts of the country,
Cambodia began distrusting their supposed American allies. The Khmer Rouge&rsquo;s popularity grew rapidly and before anyone
could realize it, Pol Pot and his army had taken the capital. Pol Pot became the country&rsquo;s decisive ruler, and thereafter
began the torturing, murdering, and near genocide of his own people. By sending inhabitants of the city into forced labor
camps, or communes, disease, starvation, and death became the norm. The country&rsquo;s economy plummeted and the society became
depressed and repressed. Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge were overthrown by Vietnam, but even through the 1990s, Pol Pot wreaked
havoc on Cambodia. He died by suicide, murder, or heart failure in 1998 before he could be brought to trial.

Scared Sacred

<font size="3"><b>Category:</b></font> Documentary<br /><font size="3"><b>Description:</b><br /></font> SYNOPSIS&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;|&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;ScaredSacred
In a world teetering on the edge of self-destruction, award-winning filmmaker Velcrow Ripper sets out on a unique pilgrimage. Visiting the 'Ground Zeros' of the planet, he asks if it's possible to find hope in the darkest moments of human history.
Ripper travels to the minefields of Cambodia; war-torn Afghanistan; the toxic wasteland of Bhopal; post-9/11 New York; Bosnia; Hiroshima; Israel and Palestine. This powerful documentary captures his five-year odyssey to discover if humanity can transform the 'scared' into the 'sacred'.
Deep in the jungles of Cambodia, Ripper meets Aki Ra, a child soldier forced to lay landmines for the Khmer Rouge. Today Aki wanders his ravaged country with a simple wooden stick, decommissioning thousands of mines each year. In the shattered land of Afghanistan, Ripper searches for a Sufi musician who was banned from performing or even listening to music, by the reign of fundamentalism. The musician discovered a way out: he filled his house with songbirds. In each Ground Zero, he unearths unforgettable stories of survival, of ritual, resilience and recovery.
ScaredSacred deftly weaves together stunning footage with haunting memories, inspirational stories, and an evocative soundscape. Featuring an engaging, first-person narrative, this film is an exquisite portrait of a search for meaning in times of turmoil, a luminous gift to a world in shadows.
Running time: 105 min.

1.1 YEAR ZERO - THE SILENT DEATH OF CAMBODIA [1979]
- At the time of its release, Year Zero was for many the first glimpse of a harrowing injustice that had been played out with little fanfare. John Pilger lays bare the entire chain of events, from the removal of King Norodom Sihanouk to ensuing famine and genocide under the Khmer Rouge. The film is both disturbing and poignant, a sobering portrait of Cambodia's recent history.

1.2 NICARAGUA - A NATION'S RIGHT TO SURVIVE [1983]
- In 1979, the Sandinistas won a popular revolution in Nicaragua, putting an end to decades of the corrupt US-backed Somoza dictatorship. They based their reformist ideology on that of the English Co-operative Movement, but was to prove too &lsquo;radical&rsquo; for the Reagan administration.

In this film, Pilger describes the achievements of the Sandinistas and their &quot;threat of a good example&quot;.

1.3 BURP! PEPSI V COKE IN THE ICE COLD WAR [1984]
- Burp! Pepsi v Coke in The Ice Cold War looks at the worldwide struggle for soft drink supremacy by the Coca Cola Company, illuminating the overwhelming power of multinational corporations over poorer countries and their struggling economies.

- Filmed at Camp Snuffy in 1970, The Quiet Mutiny presents a character study of the common soldier during the Vietnam War, revealing for the first time the shifting morale and open rebellion of Western troops.

2.2 DEATH OF A NATION - THE TIMOR CONSPIRACY [1994]
- The exposure of another terrible human tragedy to which governments turned a blind eye, East Timor - a tiny country off the northern tip of Australia - is ruled by bloodshed and fear. More than 200,000 people were wiped out by neighbouring Indonesia. Since East Timor's liberation in 1999, this film's contribution has been recognised worldwide. Won the Gold Award in the 'Political/International Issues category' (Film &amp; Video Production division) at Worldfest-Houston, 1994; Certificate for Creative Excellence (third place) in the category of 'Documentary, Current Events, Special Events', at the U.S. Film &amp; Video Festival in Chicago, 1994; Silver Plaque for 'Social/Political Documentary (National) category' at the Chicago International Film Festival, 1994; Audience Award for Best Documentary at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam, 1994; Certificate of Merit in the category of 'Documentary - Disputed Lands', Golden Gate Awards, San Francisco, 1995.

2.3 INSIDE BURMA - LAND OF FEAR [1996, updated 1998]
- John Pilger and David Munro go undercover in one of the world's most isolated, and extraordinary countries, Burma, which Amnesty International calls 'a prison without bars'. They discover slave labour preparing for tourism and foreign investment. International Actual Award for Risk Journalism, Barcelona, Spain, 1996; Bronze Plaque in the category of 'Social Issues - International Relations', The Chris Awards, Ohio, 1996; Gold Special Jury Award, 'Film &amp; Video Production division', WorldFest-Charleston, 1996; Award for Best Factual Programme, RTS Midland Centre Awards, Birmingham, 1996; Gold Apple in the category 'Politics: Social organisations in other lands', National Educational Media Network Film &amp; Video Competition at The 1997 NEMN Apple Awards, Oakland, California, 1997; the updated version won a Gold Special Jury Award in the 'Film &amp; Video Production division', WorldFest-Houston, 1999.

2.4 WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA [1999]
- With the run-up to the Sydney Olympics, John Pilger and Alan Lowery take a look at what's behind the curtain of hype and glamour. Australia's Aborigines are still exculded, impoverished and mistreated - while their part in the brilliant history of Australia's sports successes goes virtually unrecognized. Won the Gold Medal in the 'National/International Affairs category' of the 1999 New York Festivals TV Programming &amp; Promotion competition, 2000; Gold Award in the Television Documentary &amp; Information Programmes: 'Political/International Issues category' of WorldFest-Flagstaff, 1999.

**** Disc Three ****
3.1 PAYING THE PRICE - KILLING THE CHILDREN OF IRAQ [2000]
- John Pilger and Alan Lowery travel to Iraq with Denis Halliday, a former assistant secretary-general of the United Nations who resigned over what he called the &quot;immoral policy&quot; of economic sanctions. There they find a suffering nation held hostage to the compliance of a dictator, Saddam Hussein, over whom they have no control.

3.2 PALESTINE IS STILL THE ISSUE [2002]
- John Pilger returns to the Occupied Teritories of the West Bank and Gaza where he filmed a documentary with the same title, about the same issues, in 1974. He finds the basic problems unchanged: a desperate, destitute people whose homeland is illegally occupied by the world's fourth biggest military power. He hears extraordinary stories from Palestinians, though most of his interviews are with Israelis whose voices are seldom heard, including the remarkable witness of a man who lost his daughter in a suicide bombing. This film was nominated for a BAFTA, a British Academy Award.

3.3 BREAKING THE SILENCE - TRUTH AND LIES IN THE WAR ON TERROR [2003]
- This film, set in Afghanistan, Iraq and Washington, looks at President Bush's 'war on terror' and the 'liberation' of countries where bloodshed and repression continue. In Afghanistan, Pilger investigates the claim that life has improved for the women of Afghanistan now that the Taliban have gone. In Washington, he interviews leading American officials, 'neo-cons' in the Bush regime. John Bolton, of the State Department, now the US Ambassador to the United Nations, says he regards the figure of 10,000 civilian deaths in Iraq as 'quite low'. Breaking the Silencewon a number of awards, and was nominated for a BAFTA, a British Academy Award.

**** Disc Four ****
4.1 STEALING A NATION [2004]
- Pilger tells a story literally 'hidden from history'. In the 1960s and 70s, British governments, conspiring with American officials, tricked into leaving, then expelled the entire population of the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean. The aim was to give the principal island of this Crown Colony, Diego Garcia, to the Americans who wanted it as a major military base. Indeed, from Diego Garcia US planes have since bombed Afghanistan and Iraq. The story is told by islanders who were dumped in the slums of Mauritius and in the words of the British officials who left a 'paper trail' of what the International Criminal Court now describes as 'a crime against humanity' . In March 2005, 'Stealing a Nation' was awarded Britain's most prestigous documentary prize - the Royal Television Society Award.

4.2 INTERVIEW AT HAY FESTIVAL [2006]
- An interview with Anthony Hayward about Pilger's work and the media in general, including a Q&amp;A session.

From the Vietnam War to the invasion of Panama, America&rsquo;s actions abroad have had a major impact across the globe. For many the U.S. has become a figure of hate &ndash; but why? Ben Anderson takes a journey in the footprints of American soldiers and politicians to find answers and perhaps a curtain-raiser to the challenges faced today.

    1) Vietnam_first transmission - 4 June 2005
The Americans may no longer be fighting the communists in South East Asia, but the mark they left there is indelible. Ben Anderson travels to Vietnam, where he meets the &ldquo;Amerasians&rdquo; &ndash; abandoned children of GI&rsquo;s and Vietnamese women. He also witnesses backyard crocodile farming, meets would-be capitalists and hears from a third generation suffering the effects of Agent Orange.

    2) Cambodia_first transmission - 11 June 2005
Cambodia will always be synonymous with Pol Pot and the Killing Fields. Ben Anderson discovers that the country is still ravaged by the effects of war and genocide. Law and order is failing and not a single Khmer Rouge leader has been brought to justice.

    3) Nicaragua and Honduras_first transmission - 18 June 2005
The successful left-wing coup in Nicaragua that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerillas to power led to the US sponsoring anti-Sandinista contra-guerrillas throughout much of the 80s. Ben Anderson now finds a democratic Nicaragua where coffee exports are worth millions, but farmers are starving while millions of dollars of cocaine are washed up on the coastline every week.

Nobody remembers General Noriega anymore. Why did the U.S. invade to get one man? Honduras was Reagan's base for the Contra war, a C.I.A. funded insurgency that led to the Iraq-Contra scandal. Today the country's trying to crush the street gangs, most of them deportees from the U.S.. Even a tattoo can land you in jail for years.

    4) El Salvador and Panama_first transmission - 25 June 2005
A gun-carrying ex-gang leader from Los Angeles is reporter Ben Anderson&rsquo;s guide through the Central American country of El Salvador which is riven by gang warfare. The war ended over a decade ago and he meets both right-wingers and leftist guerrillas to hear what peace has brought to the country. When he visits the resort island of Panama, chemical weapons await him. Whose are they?

I'm more than a little surprised that the old 700Mb version of Manufacturing Consent is virtually the only version available online. Here is a rip of better quality.

Synopsis:
This film showcases Noam Chomsky, one of America's leading linguists and political dissidents. It also illustrates his message of how government and big media businesses cooperate to produce an effective propaganda machine in order to manipulate the opinions of the United States populous. The key example for this analysis is the simultaneous events of the massive coverage of the communist atrocities of Khmer Rouge regime of Cambodia and the suppression of news of the US supported Indonesian invasion and subjugation of East Timor.
