A trilogy of Documentary Series on Northern Ireland Conflict - Provos, Loyalists and Brits. Although this BBC Documentary was made several years ago, in light of Israel’s illegal occupation of the Palestine / West Bank and the atrocities committed in Gaza in January, it shows that Peace can be reached, but only every group have equal rights.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN

BBC documentary series looking at the history of the IRA and Sinn Fein over the past 30 years.

Episodes:
* BORN AGAIN  (23/09/1997)
* SECOND FRONT  (30/09/1997)
* SECRET WAR  (07/10/1997)
* ENDGAME  (14/10/1997)

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: BORN AGAIN
Documentary looking at the changes and rise in the Provisional IRA in Northern Ireland from 1969 on. Considers the events of civil unrest in the late 1960s, the ideology and actions of the leaders of the IRA then, which underwent a significant change after the attacks by loyalists and B Specials on Catholics and Nationalists and their homes. Looks at the background of the deployment of British troops, and how they were first welcomed, but later viewed as the enemy. Includes interviews with many older IRA members who talk about their motivations and aims, and the escalation into shooting and bombings, especially after the events of Bloody Sunday.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECOND FRONT
Looks into what was discussed at secret meetings between the British authorities and Provisional IRA during the 1970s, and how Britian may have countenanced withdrawal from Northern Ireland. Examines the emergence of Sinn Fein as a political force and the bombing campaigns both in the Province and the British mainland. Also examines the prison protests in the Maze prison, and the hunger strikes, and the effects of the deaths of Bobby Sands and other hunger strikers.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECRET WAR
Concentrates on the 1980s and the relaunch of a campaign by the IRA after the death of the hunger strikers. Looks at the increase in heavy weaponry purchased and the funding and supply lines and the IRA\'s keeness to get hold of surface-to-air missiles to shoot down army helicopters. It also goes into the emergence of IRA informants and \"supergrasses\" and the effect they had on operations.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: ENDGAME
The final episode focuses on how the military stalemate of the late 80s created a context whereby the Sinn Fein leadership could persuade the IRA Army Council that the final phase of the struggle had to be political. It also shows how the stalemate paved the way for a remarkable series of secret negotiations between the Government and the IRA which made possible the cessation of 1994. The programme also describes how, despite the end of the ceasefire and the subsequent Canary Wharf and Manchester bombings, backstage efforts for peace continued, resulting in a renewed IRA ceasefire and the current all-party talks.

LOYALISTS

Documentary series giving an intimate account of the lives of loyalist paramilitaries.

Episodes:
* NO SURRENDER  (21/02/1999)
* RETURNING THE SERVE  (28/02/1999)
* WAR AND PEACE  (07/03/1999)

NO SURRENDER
Documentary series presented by Peter Taylor, about the origins and evolution of the loyalist paramilitary movement in
Northern Ireland.

RETURNING THE SERVE
In the late 1970s the conflict in Northern Ireland reached new levels of brutality. Among those caught up in the violence was UVF member Billy Giles, who retaliated against IRA acts by murdering a Catholic workmate.

WAR AND PEACE
Former Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) prisoners Gerry Spence and Bobby Philpott claim that Loyalist violence in the early nineties made the IRA realise they could not win. Peter Taylor reveals the true face of the Loyalist paramilitaries and assesses the prospects for peace in the face of continuing sectarian tensions.

BRITS

Three-part documentary on the role of the British armed forces in Northern Ireland,
made by journalist Peter Taylor. Continues the history of the Troubles Taylor told in the
earlier series PROVOS and LOYALISTS.

Episodes:
* The SECRET WAR  (17/05/2000)
* SHOOT TO KILL  (24/05/2000)
* HOLDING THE LINE  (31/05/2000)

The SECRET WAR
This programme focuses on the period 1969-1975. As the IRA launched its terror campaign in the early 1970s, Britain realised that intelligence gathering would be the key to countering their threat. Included in this part are revelations about the covert operations carried out by the army, including the story of how the security services discovered that the IRA had bugged the army\'s Northern Ireland headquarters and how they captured key IRA figures involved with the bugging.

SHOOT TO KILL
Examination of a series of incidents from the mid-seventies where security forces reacted with speed and
aggression. Members of Special Branch, MI6 and the army talk about the dangers of life in the war against
the IRA. In their attempts to fight fire with fire did the agents of the crown sometimes go beyond the limits
acceptable in a democractic state?

HOLDING THE LINE
Third and final part of the series investigating British undercover operations in Northern Ireland. Reveals
how pressure from British intelligence services helped to bring the IRA to the negotiating table. Also looks
at the prospect for a lasting peace.

Rethink Afghanistan, Parts 1-6 (2009) (Robert Greenwald)

Category: Documentary
Description:

"Rethink Afghanistan is a ground-breaking, full-length documentary focusing on the key issues surrounding this war. By releasing this film in parts for free online, we are able to stay on top of news of the war as it continues to unfold. We hope to raise critical questions regarding Afghanistan that Congress must address in oversight hearings, which inform the public and challenge policymakers. We strive for more discussion among experts on Afghanistan, like the debates seen below released in conjunction with our documentary campaign."

Rethink Afghanistan is a 2009 documentary about the ongoing war in Afghanistan. This full-length documentary campaign features experts from Afghanistan, the U.S., and Russia discussing critical issues like military escalation, how escalation will affect Pakistan and the surrounding region, the cost of war, civilian casualties, and the rights of Afghan women.

The film interviews experts like Andrew Bacevich, Stephen Kinzer, Anand Gopal, Steve Coll, Ann Jones, Linda Bilmes, Jo Comerford, Dr. Roshanak Warnak, and more.

As part of the filmmaking process, acclaimed Director Robert Greenwald (Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers, Outfoxed, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price) traveled to Afghanistan to meet with and interview members of Afghanistan's parliament, bloggers, women's rights organizations, and groups committed to the peace movement.

The ultimate goal of this documentary campaign is to raise the level of public discourse, compel people to ask key questions about the war, and urge Congress to hold oversight hearings. Already, the campaign has successfully helped retired Corporal Rick Reyes and other veterans testify before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and meet with members of Congress.[2] Reyes, who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, testified before Sen. John Kerry and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He told the committee, "Sending more troops will not make the US safer; it will only build more opposition against us. I urge you on behalf of truth and patriotism to consider carefully and Rethink Afghanistan."

This important documentary was captured from high-quality, streaming Flash videos at its website (RethinkAfghanistan.com). The FLV files were then converted to x264 MP4 video format. These files will produce an excellent-quality DVD when converted. The filmmaker Robert Greenwald is released this film one part at a time; only 5 parts were planned originally, but they have currently released 6 parts, so perhaps what's included here is the complete film.
Seeders: 10
Leeches: 9

Aired: Nov 6, 2009

Synopsis
On a peaceful summer’s night in July 2008, along a stretch of the Trans Canada Highway in Manitoba, the unthinkable happened. What started as just another Prairie bus ride became a nightmare when the lives of two passengers intersected tragically and resulted in the murder of Tim McLean. In Bus 1170, Bob McKeown takes us inside what happened on Greyhound 1170 through the eyes of the surviving passengers and other witnesses.

A seemingly random decision, to take the Greyhound from B.C. to Winnipeg rather than a friend’s offer of a plane ticket, would cost twenty-two-year-old Tim McLean his life, would profoundly change the lives of dozens of others who saw his murder and shock anyone who has heard about it since. On Greyhound 1170, Vincent Li, a diagnosed schizophrenic on his own randomly chosen bus journey, sat beside McLean and then, obeying voices inside his head, repeatedly stabbed and then cannibalized McLean’s body

In Bus 1170, the fifth estate recounts the story from the perspective of two of the surviving passengers. Stephen Allison vividly recounts his sense of foreboding as Li walked down the aisle and took the seat across from him, beside Tim McLean. And Kayli Shaw remembers the chilling moment when Allison ran by her yelling at the driver to pull over, that someone was being stabbed. She says she is still haunted by the sound of Tim McLean’s screams.

Bob McKeown also introduces us to truck driver Chris Alguire, who stopped his truck when he saw the Greyhound at the side of the road. Alguire tried to confront Li. What he saw has left him unable to resume his former job or life since then. We’ll also meet the man who probably knows Vincent Li best, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Yaren. He spent hours with Li and transcripts of their conversations are re-created to understand why Li felt he had no choice but to kill McLean.

And the fifth estate talks to Tim McLean’s family – his father, stepmother and mother – who today still struggle to understand why the RCMP stood outside Bus 1170 for five hours, as Li cut up their son’s body, before intervening.

            Escalating violence in South Sudan has claimed more lives in 2009 than the conflict in Darfur, but has been largely ignored by the western media. Reporter Ramita Navai and director Julie Noon uncover a disturbing new trend of women and children being directly targeted.

            More than 2000 people have been killed in 2009 in South Sudan, and a quarter of a million people displaced.

            The unrest is threatening to destroy the 2005 peace deal that ended Africa's longest and bloodiest civil war, which lasted 22 years and saw over two million people killed.

Category: Documentary
Description:
On September 11, 2001, the US was rocked by the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon.

Within less than a month, it struck back at the people it believed were responsible for those attacks and the Taliban government that was hosting them in Afghanistan.

Soon, the US-backed Northern Alliance pushed back the Taliban and took over Kabul.

However, winning the peace in Afghanistan has proved to be a far more lengthy and difficult process.

In the alliances put together to achieve this end, there was the promise of a better future for the country. But within three years, the Taliban were back as a major force.

So, eight years on, what has been achieved?

Afghanistan appears to be a narco-state where corrupt politicians and commanders rule the country from their heavily fortified "poppy palaces" in the capital and civilians face the daily threat of Taliban bombs and US air strikes.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the US response to 9/11, promised a better future for the country, but eight years on it appears that Afghanistan's freedom has anything but endured.
Seeders: 14
Leeches: 2
