From the introduction to Part 1:"Both [the Islamists and Neoconservatives] were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created today’s nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful. " The Power of Nightmares, Baby It's Cold Outside.Producer: Adam CurtisProduction Company: BBC
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0

Title Pandora's Box written and directed by Adam Curtis includes 6 Parts (Repack)
Total Size 1.47Gb
6 Episodes
Episode Length 59 mins. each

This repack of Pandora's Box was done to decrease the download time and add a few notes.
My thanks to the originator of the torrent at http://dysleksik.has.it and the various trackers.
But this one will be about 2/3 the size of the original which was 2.25GB.

The folder is large but your client should allow to select one piece at a time from my
completed torrent.

Pandora's Box is about the use of science in the 20th Century. It is a work that was done
before Curtis' more well-known pieces such as The Century of the Self and The Power of
Nightmares.

The collected pieces in the torrent come from various sources. Some lack
being complete (where one is cut off before the last couple seconds are completed.)

As the British History Channel releases more of Curtis' work to dvd such as it has done with
The Century of the Self, better content will be available. Currently Century of the Self can
be purchased here:

http://www.amazon.com/Century-Self-Director-Power-Nightmares/dp/B000HD1MT8

I've requested that my library buy this. They have. I encourage others to do the same.
For now, I am trying to make a unified set of Curtis documentaries in 250mb. Pandora's box is
the first of these.

Though Curtis does not do a lot of interviews, the best one I've found is here:

http://www.greencine.com/central/node/430

They make the (in my opinion) accurate observation that what Curtis work is the 'secret
history of the 20th Century.' When viewing this content, I think you will agree.

The Mayfair Set was a series of programmes produced by Adam Curtis for the BBC. The program looked at how buccaneer capitalists were allowed to shape the climate of the Thatcher years, focusing on the rise of Colonel David Stirling, Jim Slater, James Goldsmith, and Tiny Rowland, all members of The Clermont club in the 1960s. It received the BAFTA Award for Best Factual Series or Strand in 2000.

2002 - THE CENTURY OF THE SELF

"This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy." - Adam Curtis

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, changed the perception of the human mind and its workings profoundly. His influence on the 20th century is widely regarded as massive. The documentary describes the impact of Freud's theories on the perception of the human mind, and the ways public relations agencies and politicians have used this during the last 100 years for their "engineering of consent".The Century of the Self asks deeper questions about the roots and methods of modern consumerism, representative democracy and its implications. It also questions the modern way we see ourselves, the attitude to fashion and superficiality.

The business and, increasingly, the political world uses PR to read and fulfill our desires, to make their products or speeches as pleasing as possible to us. Curtis raises the question of the intentions and roots of this fact. Where once the political process was about engaging people's rational, concious minds, as well as facilitating their needs as a society, the documentary shows how by employing the tactics of psychoanalysis, politicians appeal to irrational, primitive impulses that have little apparent bearing on issues outside of the narrow self-interest of a consumer population.

2004 - THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES (The Rise of the Politics of Fear)

The series consists of three one-hour films, consisting mostly of a montage of archive footage with Curtis's narration, which were first broadcast in the United Kingdom in late 2004 and have been subsequently aired in multiple countries and shown in several film festivals, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

The films compare the rise of the American Neo-Conservative movement and the radical Islamist movement, making comparisons on their origins and noting strong similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is in fact a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies.

The Power of Nightmares has been praised by film critics in both Britain and the United States. Its message and content have also been the subject of various critiques and criticisms from conservatives and progressives.

The series consists of three, one-hour programmes which explore the concept and definition of freedom, specifically "how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, almost robotic, creatures led to today's idea of freedom."

Many descriptions of Adam Curtis' work are available in various wiki and
other sources. Here is the description from the IMDb:

"Where did Osama Bin Laden come from, and why does he hate the American way of life?
Why do the American neo-conservatists want the public to believe in a world wide
conspiracy of evil, operating from vast underground complexes that look like a James
Bond film set? In a world that has just witnessed the worst natural disaster in
known history, why are our nightmares filled with images of bearded men and dirty
bombs? This three-part documentary gives the answers. In a cool, factual manner, it
goes back to the historic roots of both sides in this lukewarm war, and shows us how
eerily similar they are. That is what is really scary about the war on terrorism.
This series is essential viewing for everyone who wants to understand the most
important conflict of our time. Which should include you."

---

Adam Curtis' work deals with fear and control. In The Century of the Self
he explored how the nephew of Sigmund Freud, Edward Bernays, used Freudian
principles to manipulate the hidden fears and desires of the consumers of mass
media.

The images used by Curtis are very often from stock footage to convey a point.
The films are lectures with pictures (pictures where copyright is not an issue is my
guess.) These blend with the interviews which comprise the original content of
Curtis' research.

The importance of Curtis' work cannot be underestimated. Power Of Nightmares was

The Power Of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics

The Power of Nightmares, subtitled The Rise of the Politics of Fear, is a BBC series of documentary films, written and produced by Adam Curtis.

This documentary argues that during the 20th Century politicians lost the power to inspire the masses, and that the optimistic visions and ideologies they had offered were perceived to have failed. The film asserts that politicians consequently sought a new role that would restore their power and authority. Curtis, who also narrates the series, declares in the film's introduction that “Instead of delivering dreams, politicians now promise to protect us: from nightmares”. To illustrate this Curtis compares the rise of the American neoconservatives and radical Islamists, believing that both are closely connected; that some popular beliefs about these groups are inaccurate; and that both movements have benefited from exaggerating the scale of the terrorist threat.
