Category: Documentary
Description:
As mutual fear, mistrust and polarisation increases between Iran and Israel, an arms race between the two sworn enemies is gathering momentum. Central to this is the Russian-made S-300 missile system. It is one of the most advanced multi-target anti-aircraft missile systems in the world today and air power experts say it represents a formidable defence against conventional aircraft. In 2005, Iran sought to buy five batteries of the S-300 from Russia in a deal believed to be worth around $800 million. The S-300 would significantly boost Iran's defence capability at a time when it is concerned about the US military's presence in neighbouring Iraq and Afghanistan and Israeli threats to target its nuclear facilities. But the S-300 deal has yet to go through and Israel has been engaging in some diplomatic wrangling in an attempt to ensure that it does not. In early June 2009, Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's Russian-speaking foreign minister, visited Moscow. He was on a mission to convince Russia to put an end to its arms deals with Iran and Syria and, in particular, to halt the sale and delivery of Russia's S-300 missile system to Iran. Lieberman had a bargaining chip: If Russia went ahead with the sale to Iran, Israel might continue to provide hi-tec weapons to neighbouring Georgia, which engaged Russia in a war last year. Filmmaker Abdallah el-Binni investigates this high-stakes game of brinkmanship as it threatens to spread to other countries in the region.
Seeders: 3
Leeches: 0

Workingmans Death (2005) (DVDRip) (QiX)

Category: Documentary
Description:
Synopsis:

The toil of the workingman is the fascinating subject for this documentary from Austrian director Michael Glawogger. Taking five groups of workers from five different countries, Glawogger looks at the perils of being a coal miner in the Ukraine, a slaughterhouse worker in Nigeria, a sulfur miner in Indonesia, a ship-breaker in Pakistan, and a steel worker in China. Some of the conditions these men work in will come as a shock to the average office worker, and provides viewers with an important perspective on the harsh treatment meted out to certain factions of the workforce.

Austrian director Michael Glawogger divides his documentary into a number of extended vignettes. In Heroes, college graduates can't find work in the desolate post-Soviet period in the Ukraine. So they descend upon abandoned, frigid coal mines. There they imperil their lives squeezing into crumbling tiny crawl spaces, in order to extract bits of coal to sell and eke out a subsistence. The free lance miners are embittered and demoralized, and Glawogger contrasts them with images from the past of optimistic, radiant Soviet coal miner collectives.

In the chapter Ghosts, Glawogger moves on to Indonesia, where workers wind their way up and down the surreal, treacherous basin of a volcano under a punishing sun, gathering sulfur in overloaded, creaky bamboo baskets. The plumes of sulfur gas are visually captivating, yet unimaginably disturbing in the unspoken poisonous toll they are simultaneously inflicting on these impoverished workers' lives.

Other episodes include the casual carnage of an unsanitary open air livestock slaughterhouse in Nigeria, with blood and entrails flowing unheeded through the city streets. Then in Pakistan, despairing migrant workers engage in the dangerous labor of dismantling gigantic oil carriers, while praying to Allah that they'll survive the task. The documentary concludes at a vast, defunct German steel mill that has been unbelievably transformed into an amusement park, complete with a light show. Meanwhile, young couples seek out remote corners among the rusty former smelting furnaces, to engage in a little sex.

While the experience of Workingman's Death is rich in visual material for contemplation or just plain wonder, there is at the same time a gnawing feeling of voyeuristic objectification of these workers. It's as if the leisure class were sitting back and whimsically beholding their house servants sweating away at domestic tasks.
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0

CBC - India Reborn

About the series:

In 4 vibrant hours of HD television, INDIA REBORN charts the kaleidoscopic rise of one of the world’s newest and most unlikely superpowers. Epic and cinematic in scope, each episode unfolds with fascinating intimacy and insight revealing characters who reflect India’s dramatic transformation. INDIA REBORN is a potent mixture of dreams and despair, an entertaining and informative window into a land that could soon shape the future of the world.

Home to charismatic gurus, prowling tigers and shimmering temples, India today boasts 28 billionaires, 100,000 millionaires and a middle class that is now bigger than the total population of the United States. A sprawling, chaotic democracy with 850 languages in daily use, 28 federated states and a stubborn caste system, India has a population of more than a billion people, half of them under 25. Almost in spite of herself, she is poised to become the world’s third largest economy, and a powerful voice in world affairs.

Propelled by an IT sector boasting some of the best engineers on the planet, India is taking over the world’s cyber business. Multi-nationals around the world are rushing to her doorstep and superpowers both east and west aggressively court her affections. Thousands of “medical tourists” flock to India’s luxury hospitals for cut-price, first-rate treatments while sumptuous new hotels draw in growing crowds of vacationers seeking Indian secrets to rejuvenate mind and body. Movie-goers around the world worship the stars of the world’s largest dream-factory, Bollywood. In India, actors are the new gods and goddesses, or, at the very least, some of the country’s more successful politicians.

INDIA REBORN shows how the Indian miracle is among the strangest stories in economic history. It is a “jobless” boom, with the IT sector employing just 1.6 million lucky people. Outside the formal job economy, five hundred million workers wait impatiently for their turn at fortune in the Indian renaissance. The starker reality is an impoverished village life that is the norm for over 70% of Indians. Every night, half of India’s children go to bed hungry. Rampant corruption, patronage politics, cities that are choking on their own growth, staggering pollution and severe water shortages – all conspire against the Indian dream. Hanging over it all is another cloud; nuclear war with neighbouring Pakistan and the constant threat of communal violence from religious tension at home. But just like a Bollywood movie, hope and an enduring belief in happiness are a part of the soul of India.

The series will take full advantage of India's breathtaking land and seascapes, its colourful festivals and religious ceremonies and most of all, its diverse and articulate people, to bring this portrait of a nation to a broad, prime time audience.

** 2008 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL - OFFICIAL SELECTION **

Directed by Ivan O'Mahoney & Laura Winter
80 Minutes

Baghdad High views the current war in Iraq through the eyes of four Iraqi teens as they enter their senior year of high school. Filmed by the boys themselves, the documentary follows their friendships during the entire academic year and offers unique insight into ordinary adolescent Iraqi lives.

"The daily news about Iraq was so relentlessly depressing for so many years," says Ivan O'Mahoney, who directed and produced the film with Laura Winter. "It was therefore fantastic to realize while making this film that there is normality amidst all the violence, and that people do lead normal lives, despite the mayhem around them. It gave me a lot of hope to see kids be kids."

Collectively, the teens recorded more than 300 hours of tape, which were woven into the final project by the supervising producers. A mix of religious and ethnic backgrounds, the young men featured in BAGHDAD HIGH include: Hayder, who yearns to be a singer-songwriter; Anmar, who thinks he is a stud with girls and plays soccer like David Beckham; Ali, who dreams of being an architect; and his best friend Mohammed, who doesn't yet know what he wants to be, and is content being the joker of the bunch. They could be teens in any city around the world, talking about celebrities like Britney Spears, debating who has the best-ripped jeans and discussing whose hair is a disaster. But their lives are actually very different: Every day, they are surrounded by suicide bombings, mortar attacks, kidnappings and citywide curfews.

Notes co-director and co-producer Laura Winter, "One of the things I was struck by was that all these documentaries coming out of Iraq were done for, or by, adults. Iraqi children had not been more than a UN statistic about the dead, kidnapped or injured."

The first day of school - Oct. 1, 2006 - marks the beginning of the most violent month since America invaded Iraq. That month, 2,722 men, women and children die, many because of their religion. However, the boys don't let religious, ethnic or economic differences come between them.

They often miss school because leaving the house is too dangerous. They debate whether they can hang out with each other after school, because the short journey home afterward means running the risk of being injured by a roadside bomb or a stray bullet. Even if they want to study, concentration is difficult in a war zone, and the electricity often goes out unexpectedly for hours or days at a time. As the city is torn apart by sectarian violence, each of the 17-year-olds and his family struggle to make a critical decision - stay in Baghdad and risk their lives, or flee to safer areas. Every day, nearly 2,000 Baghdad residents leave, joining some four million refugees who are already relocated around the country or live in Jordan and Syria.

"The fact that the kids are all from different backgrounds, and yet remained friends as their city was torn to bits by sectarian violence, was one of the most satisfying parts of making BAGHDAD HIGH," states Laura Winter. "It filled us with great hope for Iraq's future - and maybe ours, too."

BAGHDAD HIGH is a Renegade Pictures and StoryLabTV Production for HBO, BBC & ARTE; produced and directed by Ivan O'Mahoney & Laura Winter; editors, Richard Guard & Johnny Burke; executive producers, Alan Hayling, Karen O'Connor (for BBC), Hans Robert Eisenhauer (for ARTE); co-producer, Alex Cooke; associate producers, Fallah Al Rubaie & Zaid H. Change or More of the Same? Obama Introduces National Security Team
President-elect Barack Obama named former rival Senator Hillary Clinton as secretary of state on Monday and said Robert Gates would remain defense secretary. Other nominees included retired General James Jones to be National Security Adviser and Susan Rice as ambassador to the United Nations. Is that change or more of the same? We speak with investigative journalist Robert Dreyfuss of The Nation magazine and Steven Clemons of the New America Foundation.

Israeli Reporter Amira Hass Forced Out of Gaza by Hamas, Detained by Israeli Police For Entering Gaza Without Permit
Israel has imposed a tightened blockade over its million and a half residents for nearly a month. Last month, award-winning Israeli journalist Amira Hass defied the blockade and entered Gaza on a boat with international peace activists. But on Sunday, Hamas officials told Hass they could no longer guarantee her security and forced her to leave. Hass was briefly detained by Israeli security officials upon re-entering Israel Monday because she did not have a permit for Gaza. Amira Hass joins us on the phone from Ramallah.

Chevron Cleared in 1998 Shooting Deaths of Protesters in Niger Delta
A federal jury in San Francisco has just cleared oil giant Chevron of any responsibility for the May 1998 shooting and killing of protesters in the oil-rich Niger Delta. A decade ago over 100 protesters had occupied a Chevron-owned oil platform to demand compensation and jobs for the environmental damage caused by Chevron’s drilling. The Nigerian military shot and killed two unarmed protesters and wounded several others. Survivors had argued that Chevron should be held accountable because it paid the Nigerian military and transported them by helicopter to the oil platform. We speak with the lead plaintiff and the attorney in the case.

Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0
