Darwin's Nightmare (2004) Darwin's Nightmare is a 2004 French-Belgian-Austrian documentary film written and directed by Hubert Sauper, dealing with the environmental and social effects of the fishing industry around Lake Victoria in Tanzania. It premiered at the 2004 Venice Film Festival, and was nominated for the 2006 Academy Award for Documentary Feature at the 78th Academy Awards. The larger scope of the story explores the gun trade to Africa that takes place under the covers -- Russian pilots fly guns into Africa, then fly fish back out to Europe. The hazards and consequences of this trade are explored, including the pan-African violence propagated by constant flow of weapons into the continent. If it is a "survival of the fittest" world, as Darwin concluded, then the capitalist interests that fund the gun runners are climbing the evolutionary ladder on the backs of the Africans in this stark Darwinian example. Much like the foreseeable extinction of the Lake Victoria perch, and death of Lake Victoria itself, the Africans are in grave jeopardy, even as they survive in the only ways they know how.

They find the community of Jose Olaya almost deserted. Despite its remoteness, oil companies have been drilling in the area for years. .. A government study has shown that two thirds of all children tested had above safe levels of lead in their blood. The company involved denies the allegations, and says it's unaware of any credible data to support them. The team are taken to visit another area of land more than six kilometres long, which has become seriously polluted by oil residues. Despite a clean-up operation, a thick, black tar-like substance lies just beneath the soil, emitting a powerful stench. Navai and Nott travel to the city of Iquitos, Peru's largest jungle town, to meet with an environmental group. Its spokesman tells Unreported World that indigenous people are becoming increasingly angry about the pollution and breaches of their basic rights by a government that is proposing to open up huge areas of the Amazon to oil, gas and mining companies. ..edit.. Exile in Buyukada (2000) Revolutionary theorist Leon Trotsky was one of the leading figures in Russia's 1917 October Revolution, which brought the Bolsheviks to power and spawned the creation of the Soviet Union. However, in time Trotsky and Joseph Stalin became sharply divided on many issues, and after ill health edged Lenin out of power, Stalin forced Trotsky into exile in 1929. Until his death in 1940, Trotsky spent his time in exile searching for a safe place to write and plan new political strategies; one of the first places where he settled was in Buyukada, Istanbul, where he lived from 1929 to 1933. Exile in Buyukada is a documentary which examines this little-known chapter in Trotsky's life; actress and political activist Vanessa Redgrave narrates. Based on a book, "The Profit Outcast", by Isaac Deutcher. Won Best Documentary at the 2000 Milan International Film Festival.

This forms the premise of the documentary, which recounts acts of rescue by ordinary Dutch people during the Second World War. These people who came from all walks of life put themselves at great personal risk to rescue and provide refuge to Jewish people who were fleeing the clutches of the Nazis. The focus here is primarily on the rescue of Jewish children, and these survivors who are grown adults in the present give their personal testimonies as to how they were rescued and recount their wartime experiences as well as describe their immense affection and gratitude towards their rescuers. Many of the Dutch rescuers worked for the Dutch resistance and there is some coverage on the main leaders of the movement such as Mrs Kuipers and Pastor Frits Slomp. There is also mention of the crucial role played by women in the Resistance - as messengers, transporters of refugees, and some were even in the armed branch of the resistance. The Dutch people that provided shelter and acted as foster parents to Jewish children in hiding were mainly devout Christians who felt it was their religious duty to help these helpless and persecuted children. One particular rescue effort really touched me - the Nazis had set up a 'nursery' for Jewish children who had been forcibly taken from their parents,and these kids were destined for extermination camps in Auschwitz and Sobibor. Well, in the documentary, we learn how members of the Dutch resistance managed to successfully rescue 232 of these doomed children and take them to safety. Of the 110,000 Dutch Jews transported, only 6,000 survived the Holocaust, and the ones who survived the war in hiding owe their lives to the courage of ordinary Dutch civilians who went to extraordinary lengths to keep them safe. 28,000 Dutch resistance members were killed by the Nazis, and this documentary is a testament to their tremendous courage.
