Many of the boys have had no family or reliable support in life. There is no place for them in the sad world of their parents, who are often alcoholics, unemployed and living in hovels. And their unhappy expressions only brighten when they talk of their passions and their hopes. At this detention center, these adolescent boys no longer have to fight to survive. They do not have to face everyday torture from their families nor go hungry. They have found temporary refuge and solace among their four walls, in a juvenile detention center where they have a strict regiment, educational opportunities, decent meals and medical care. On the other hand, they are living amongst other thieves and even murderers. Can these boys build new lives for themselves? Displaying both great empathy and restraint, Westmeier builds a heartfelt portrait of innocence lost and a chance of redemption.

Michelle and Sebastian after an intense fight on the subway “Dope Sick“ is the street term for the excruciating illness and pain that occur when an addict can’t get a fix. According to the government website, there are one million heroin addicts and eight million people who have used crack in the U.S. Presented without music, effects, or narration, DOPE SICK LOVE is pure cinema verité, shot on the streets of lower Manhattan over a period of 18 months. It is stark and unrelenting. The camera follows the two couples into the corridors of apartment buildings where they shoot up; into the homes of the johns who pay for their services; and back out onto the streets as they chase their next fix. “We didn’t want to make just another drug film,” says Craig Renaud. “Most films about drug addicts don’t adequately portray the horrors of addiction. Drug addiction controls every aspect of a user’s life. It reduces family, work, hobbies and friendships to distant memories. In order to capture this dark reality, we had to ‘embed’ ourselves into this life. When you watch DOPE SICK LOVE you won’t just see what its like to live this kind of life, you will feel it.” Matt kisses a client goodbye The documentary takes place in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of beautiful, historic brownstone houses and tree-lined streets. It’s also the place where Matt and Tracy score their drugs, and break into buildings to shoot heroin and smoke crack. Tracey was a 17-year-old in private school when she started experimenting with drugs. Matt, who has been on the streets since he was 14, prostitutes himself to gay men to support his habit. His mother would like to help him fight his drug addiction, but has lost hope, observing, “Matt was a good kid and then he grew up. I can’t deal with his lifestyle any longer.” Tracey’s long-suffering father won’t give up on his daughter. The weekly checks he sends her go entirely to support the couples’ drug habits. To get them off the streets, Tracey’s father finally decides that he has no choice but to rent an apartment for them in Brooklyn. This is a happy ending of sorts, but one that feels fragile, because Tracy and Matt continue to do drugs. Without the financial support of family, Sebastian and Michelle have a tougher time. Sebastian engages in gay prostitution when the couple is desperate for money, but he doesn’t want his girl Michelle engaging in sex for money. Michelle is a master of the scam, luring prospective sex clients into compromising situations. Then, posing as a cop, she pulls out a fake badge and extorts cash from the johns in exchange for their “freedom.” Sebastian and Michelle’s hand-to-mouth existence strains their relationship. As the high wears off they get into violent street fights. Eventually, the desire for drugs is stronger than their love for each other. They part ways and end up on the streets -- alone. “Let this film be a warning to anyone who thinks that drugs will bring anything but degradation and desperation,” says Brent Renaud. “Even though DOPE SICK LOVE deals with two romances, nothing is romanticized in this documentary. There is nothing constructive about crack. There is nothing heroic about heroin. Storm has been eating a raw vegan diet of fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetables in their unheated state for over 30 years, and has become known among raw vegans for his body builder\'s physique. At 57 he is still youthful. Jinjee first started eating a raw vegan diet when she met Storm 12 years ago. Her before and after pictures show her transformation. The whole family is 100% raw vegan with no supplements or dehydrated foods. This documentary was assembled from footage that Storm and Jinjee collected over the years. They have four raw vegan children. In the film they share the challenges that they\'ve faced, both personally and with friends and families, and the differences that cooked vegan and raw vegan have made in their lives. They share nutrition information and information about the growth and development of their children, with taped visits to the doctor, and comparisons to CDC height and weight charts. There is a good section on raw vegans and exercise requirements. There is impressive footage of Jinjee during a raw vegan pregnancy, exercising, and walking 5 miles a day, even as she came to term. There is footage of her taken ten days after her child was born, with Jinjee healthy, radiant, active and thin. There is an interview with Jinjee discussing her four pregnancies, both cooked vegan and raw vegan, and how the raw vegan deliveries went much smoother and faster. For anybody raising raw vegan children, or considering doing so, I heartily recommend this film. There are enough beautiful women and hunky men in the movie to keep even the most non-raw spouse interested in the film. Letter to Anna - The Story of Journalist Politkovskaya's Death

A documentary always needs a skillful hand and eye to bring it together, otherwise the subject can easily get lost in the layout and presentation of the film. However, the true magic behind a documentary is often luck. No matter how much planning and careful crafting go into the film, there is always a degree of fortuity involved -- that your subjects will be cogent and engaging, or that the story unfolds in a cinematic way. This luck is what made The Ghosts of Cite Soliel so insanely gripping, and why this new documentary by Eric Bergkraut, Letter to Anna -- The Story of Journalist Politkovskaya's Death, is worth your time. The benefit of making documentaries about current or recent media figures who have passed away is that there is a fountain of information to choose from -- video clips, interviews, memoirs, family members, friends. They allow for a deeper and more personal look at the subject, and free the filmmaker from having to make educated guesses based on old sources skewed by translation, agenda, and lost bits of information. But rarely, if ever, do we see a documentary about someone who has passed away where their interviews speak directly to the theme of the film. In the case of Letter to Anna, Bergkraut is fortunate enough to have hours of interviews with slain journalist Anna Politkovskaya from his previous documentary, Coca: The Dove from Chechnya. These conversations not only infuse the film with a definite sense of who she was, but also allow us to learn about Anna's passions and personality directly from the source. When Vladimir Putin turned 54 on October 2, 2006, he received a bloody gift -- one of his biggest critics, Anna Politkovskaya, was murdered as she entered her home in Moscow. It is a crime that has never officially been solved, but one that is surely connected to the journalist's political critiques. A champion for those who suffer, Politkovskaya was a persistent voice against the oppressed, especially those suffering through the war in Chechnya. In the face of threats, a poisoned drink, and a particularly brutal arrest and detainment, she continued to tell the stories of those that suffered, determined to make their voices heard, no matter what the cost. Narrated by Susan Sarandon (and by Catherine Deneuve in the French version), Letter to Anna lays out the entire world of this famous journalist from belief to practice. Politkovskaya was a woman dedicated to her convictions and work -- at the expense of her once carefree ways, her marriage and, ultimately, her life. The doc details her work in Chechnya and explains the politics she fought for and against, but it's the moments where the film dips into Politkovskaya and her personal life that are most memorable. Beyond the wealth of footage of Anna, there are intimate discussions with both of her children. Footage of her son shows a man determined to know who gave the order for her mother's murder, and likening those who carried it out as nothing more than pawns in the story, while her daughter reveals the woman behind the work -- a strict mother obsessed with truth. In her candid interviews you can tell it's not just about praising her mother for the camera, but talking openly and honestly about the woman Anna was. There are moments in this story where the documentary drags, especially with overused shots of Politkovskaya walking -- a convention that can be helpful when delivering voiceovers, but in this film just seems like filler. But overall, the crisp HD shots are beautiful, and Bergkraut catches a number of special moments -- both the insistent professional purpose of Politkovskaya and the moments when she laughed, as well as how her work impacted others. In one scene, a police officer demands that a woman take down a poster she has attached to the wall of Anna's home. She refuses, he rips it down, and then another woman steps up, asking him for the poster. "Why?" he asks. She responds: "So I can stick it back on the wall." Anna Politkovskaya was a beacon of determination, and to see her in action in Letter to Anna is inspiring, just as it is to see the determination she has inspired in the women who admire her.
