Title It Happened Here Directed and produced by Kevin Brownlow Runtime: 1:34:26 Those who have seen the recent torrent called Winstanley by Kevin Brownlow will enjoy this first effort by Brownlow and Andrew Mollon Excerpted from the Wiki: The film was directed by Kevin Brownlow, who later became a prominent film historian, and Andrew Mollo, who was to become a leading military historian. Brownlow developed the concept of the film when he was eighteen, in 1956. He turned to Mollo, a sixteen-year-old history buff, to help him with the design of costumes and sets. Mollo was intrigued by the project, and became his collaborator. The film was in the making for the next eight years, which the Guinness Book of World Records (as of 2003) calls the longest ever production schedule. It was shot in black and white on 16 mm film, giving it a grainy, newsreel feel. The audio quality (and lighting) on the opening reel is rather poor, which makes the dialog difficult to follow for the first few minutes. It had a cast of hundreds, all volunteers, with only two professional actors among them (Sebastian Shaw, Reginald Marsh). (A number of the extras in the film were members of British science fiction fandom, and a portion was previewed at a science fiction convention in Peterborough. end excerpt. ;; Using volunteers in the manner that Peter Watkins does drew me to this film and my local library had purchased it. ;; At the time I knew nothing of Brownlow until the re-release of Winstanley (2009). ;; Though not a do it youself effort in the practical sense of the term It Happened Here shows what can be done with minimal production equipment. The subject of occupation is current. A comparison of "It Happened Here" with the recent television series "Jericho" is recommended. A further exploration of how "newsreel" footage was used in the depiction of war is in "The Victors" (1963) by Carl Foreman and currently available on torrents. For me it is quite telling the difference between what Hollywood stars did in "The Victors" as compared with any crop of Young Lions today. It's not only telling, it's disheartening. Guantanamo naval base, 'Gitmo', covers forty five square miles of Cuba inside an area under a controversial 'permanent lease' to the United States. Since 2002, the base has become synonymous with its detainment facilities for suspected terrorists. Although Barack Obama has given orders for the detention camp to be closed, the facilities remain open to this day. David Miller's quiet, powerful film is the result of three days the filmmaker spent touring the camps in May 2008 as part of a small group of media representatives allowed there. Although the event was presented as a chance to 'see inside' the working of Guantanamo, it was in fact a carefully staged PR exercise designed to yield predictable, stale, controlled media images. The film follows an intertribal coalition as they fight to transform their local economies by replacing coal mines and smog-belching power plants with renewable energy technologies. This transition would honor their heritage and support future generations by protecting their sacred land, providing electricity to their homes and creating jobs for their communities. Their story is a parable for our time, when the planet as a whole hungers for alternatives to fossil fuels. For environmental trailblazers, it’s proof that going green is not only possible—it’s the only choice we have. The POWER PATHS story begins in the 1960s, when two massive coal mines open on Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona. Between them, they produce enough coal to satisfy the unquenchable energy thirsts of Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They also comprise the single largest strip-mining complex in the world. For more than 30 years, the mines—and the Mohave Generating Station they supply—scar sacred native land, drain the natural aquifers and pollute the Southwestern skies. Meanwhile, beneath the high-tension power lines that carry electricity to the neon-saturated Vegas Strip, Native American reservation dwellers have no electricity or running water. Sickened by the economic disparity and the mounting toll on their land and health, some Navajo and Hopi tribe members begin pressuring their tribal governments not to renew the mining leases, but to no avail. As a result, a handful of grassroots organizers from both tribes join forces with The Sierra Club, the Grand Canyon Trust and the National Parks and Conservation Association to fight back. Calling themselves the Just Transition Coalition, they take on wealthy and entrenched adversaries from Peabody to Southern California Edison. They succeed in closing the power plant (and subsequently the mines) in 2005. But the ecological and moral victory comes at a cost: About half of the adults on the reservations had worked for the mines, and are now unemployed. Undeterred, the Just Transition Coalition shifts gears and heads for California, where they win a legal battle to use the shuttered Mohave plant’s cap-and-trade pollution credits to finance investment in solar panels and wind turbines for their reservations. In one scene, a Navajo mother screws a light bulb into a kitchen socket for the first time and sees it light up, enabling her children to stop depending on sunlight or dangerous kerosene lanterns in order to do their homework. She weeps in relief and gratitude. Today, more tribes are seeking investments and partnerships to create green-energy economies on the reservation, with hopes that one day, renewable energy will replace casinos as a primary means for economic development and tribal self-sufficiency. As the nation at large struggles to disengage itself from the chains of a fossil-fuel-based economy, POWER PATHS signals cause for hope that an alternative is not somewhere in the future, but possible right now. And Native Americans are leading the way. Update In June 2009, the 21st Navajo Nation Council voted 62 to 1 to establish a Navajo Green Economy Commission, according to the Sierra Club. Donna Shirley is a former manager of Mars Exploration at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the author of the book Managing Martians. She managed the team that built Sojourner, the Microrover, which was landed by the highly successful Mars Pathfinder project on the surface of Mars in 1997. Lawrence Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist and author of several bestselling books including The Physics of Star Trek. His research interests include the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology. He writes regularly for various newspapers and magazines, and appears frequently on radio and television. Karl Schroeder is a science fiction author of several popular books, including, The Sunless Countries: Book Four of Virga. The America Undercover documentary DOPE SICK LOVE tells the stories of these two couples. Cinematographers, Brent and Craig Renaud spent 18 months on the streets to capture the raw reality in a frightening and compelling you-are-there style. The special is executive produced by 11-time Emmy® winner Jon Alpert (HBO’s “High on Crack Street: Lost Lives of Lowell”). Michelle and Sebastian after an intense fight on the subway “Dope Sick“ is the street term for the excruciating illness and pain that occur when an addict can’t get a fix. According to the government website, there are one million heroin addicts and eight million people who have used crack in the U.S. Presented without music, effects, or narration, DOPE SICK LOVE is pure cinema verité, shot on the streets of lower Manhattan over a period of 18 months. It is stark and unrelenting. The camera follows the two couples into the corridors of apartment buildings where they shoot up; into the homes of the johns who pay for their services; and back out onto the streets as they chase their next fix. “We didn’t want to make just another drug film,” says Craig Renaud. “Most films about drug addicts don’t adequately portray the horrors of addiction. Drug addiction controls every aspect of a user’s life. It reduces family, work, hobbies and friendships to distant memories. In order to capture this dark reality, we had to ‘embed’ ourselves into this life. When you watch DOPE SICK LOVE you won’t just see what its like to live this kind of life, you will feel it.” Matt kisses a client goodbye The documentary takes place in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of beautiful, historic brownstone houses and tree-lined streets. It’s also the place where Matt and Tracy score their drugs, and break into buildings to shoot heroin and smoke crack. Tracey was a 17-year-old in private school when she started experimenting with drugs. Matt, who has been on the streets since he was 14, prostitutes himself to gay men to support his habit. His mother would like to help him fight his drug addiction, but has lost hope, observing, “Matt was a good kid and then he grew up. I can’t deal with his lifestyle any longer.” Tracey’s long-suffering father won’t give up on his daughter. The weekly checks he sends her go entirely to support the couples’ drug habits. To get them off the streets, Tracey’s father finally decides that he has no choice but to rent an apartment for them in Brooklyn. This is a happy ending of sorts, but one that feels fragile, because Tracy and Matt continue to do drugs. Without the financial support of family, Sebastian and Michelle have a tougher time. Sebastian engages in gay prostitution when the couple is desperate for money, but he doesn’t want his girl Michelle engaging in sex for money. Michelle is a master of the scam, luring prospective sex clients into compromising situations. Then, posing as a cop, she pulls out a fake badge and extorts cash from the johns in exchange for their “freedom.” Sebastian and Michelle’s hand-to-mouth existence strains their relationship. As the high wears off they get into violent street fights. Eventually, the desire for drugs is stronger than their love for each other. They part ways and end up on the streets -- alone. “Let this film be a warning to anyone who thinks that drugs will bring anything but degradation and desperation,” says Brent Renaud. “Even though DOPE SICK LOVE deals with two romances, nothing is romanticized in this documentary. There is nothing constructive about crack. There is nothing heroic about heroin.
