Film list: 1. Friends of Kim North Korea is the country many love to hate. Declared as a nation on the axis of evil by George W. Bush but embraced by an international delegation of friends: the Korean Friendship Association.They set out for a march through North Korea. Its aim: to show solidarity with the regime and the North Korean people. The authorities even allowed some US citizens in and an American journalist from ABC. This 'International March for Korea's Peace and Reunification' is organised by the KFA, the Korean Friendship Association; a worldwide group of supporters of North Korea. Its leader is a 29 year old Spanish citizen, Alejandro Cao de Benos de Les y Perez. Originating from an aristocratic family he heads an organization with mainly young members who are fed up with the consumerism of the Western world. In 12 days the 22 participants of the march travel through a country full of monuments, propaganda and poverty. Friends of Kim is a film about idealism, trust and crime. What begins as a magical mystery tour ends in a road to claustrophobia. 2. Holidays in the Axis of Evil The Bush regime claims that North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya and Cuba are part of an "axis of evil". In a remarkable two-part travelogue, reporter Ben Anderson, armed with a hidden camera and a tourist map, visits all six rogue states and tries to find the reality of life in some of the most repressive regimes in the world. He spoke to us about this unusual vacation. 3. North Korea: A Day in the Life A day in the life of an ordinary familyà in North Korea, land of the beloved leader Kim Jong-il. Filmmaker Pieter Fleury gives us a glimpse into the world of Hong Sun Hui, a female textile worker. At the factory, everything is highly controlled and all the workersÆ actions and results are meticulously entered in notebooks. Like puppets, the workers impassively carry out their tasks and finish their days singing hymns to the glory of Kim Jong-il. In her kindergarten class, HongÆs daughter learns that ôflowers need the sun and she needs the love of the Great Leader to grow.ö When the family gathers at home in the evening, the propaganda continues to flow through the television. Unexpectedly, relief from the Orwellian control and clockwork regularity comes from the English classes that HongÆs brother is taking: they provide a moment of humour and open-mindedness. The mechanisms of this perfect system of indoctrination and oppression are depicted through coldly precise images. The resulting film is a terrifying vision of a totalitarian state that recalls MaoÆs China, on which it was largely based. Absurd, grotesque, but sadly true. 4. The Real Dr. Evil North Koreans call him "dear leader." President Bush calls him part of an "axis of evil." Kidnapper, terrorist, and likely nuclear tyrant also apply. This program uses extensive newsreel footage, archival materials, and exclusive interviews to create a biographical and psychological profile of Kim Jong Il in order to understand what motivates his sometimes bizarre and often tragic deeds. Interviews include former bodyguards, a former central committee member, a former North Korean spy, CIA profilers, Pentagon advisers, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Donald Gregg, and Selig Harrison, author of Korean Endgame. Undercover in the secret state Documentary reporting on life in North Korea under the highly repressive regimed of Kim Jong II, using undercover footage and interviews shot by filmmaker Kim Jung Eun and other volunteer dissidents. Includes footage of prison camps and public executions. Also looks at how dissident groups are utilising South Korean soap operas, transmitting them illegally, to foment discontent as they starkly contrast standards of living between the North and South and undermine North Korean propaganda. 6. Welcome to North Korea This film, shot mostly covertly, shows the irony of a regime where 20 million people lived in poverty, some on the brink of starvation, while former dictator Kim II Sung built extravagant monuments to reflect his power. He fostered a grotesque personality cult, which his son and successor Kim Jong Il perpetuates. All around the capital, Pyongyang, an endless stream of propaganda glorifies the leaders. Monuments and museums pay homage to them, but they are strangely empty. The contrast between capitalist South Korea and the impoverished North is dramatically shown. The founder of Hyundai, Tsjoen Joe Jung is held in great esteem in the south. He believes in uniting the two Koreas and has made significant donations to economic development in the north, trying to ease the way to reunion. The film crew was not allowed to interview people at random. The ones "selected to speak to foreigners" gave an idealized image of the regime that was hardly credible. Footage shot secretly by a Chinese relief organization attests to a generation dying from starvation and disease, and suffering terrible human rights abuses. Welcome to North Korea captures in a vivid manner the tight grip the regime has on its people, with a power not used benevolently. 7. Children of the Secret State Children of the Secret State' is an investigation into North Korea, considered by many as the last Stalinist dictatorship, a hidden and sealed country riddled with propaganda and saturated with hostility to democracy and the West. Joe Layburn and the Hardcash team discovered a young North Korean, known by the pseudonym 'Ahn Chol', who has been filiming undercover so that the world can see what is going on in his native land: the country where his parents both starved to death. His devastating footage shows some of the estimated 200,000 street children, mainly orphans, foraging for food in the mud and the gutters, ignored by the adults around them and ignored by the state which claims they are at its bosom. Joe embarks on a state-run tourist visit of North Korea, revealing vast unoccupied hotels, empty boulevards and countless monuments of Kim Jong II, the county's leader. 8. North Korea - Desperate Or Deceptive A silent revolution has started in North Korea. This documentary looks behind the closed doors of the country and investigate the social, political and economical changes that happens. North Korea is, despite its fear for changes, a country that needs to embrace the new routine if the current government wishes to keep the power. 9. An example of how advertising and lobbying groups censor American news, this three part documentary by the famous middle east war correspondent Robert Fisk was banned by the Discovery channel in 1993. The films seek to explain the rise of anti-Western sentiment throughout the ?Muslim world? (from the Middle East to the Balkins, the range of the former Ottoman Empire) by highlighting the oppressiveness of Western-supported governments (Israel and Egypt, in particular) and the West\'s broader anti-Muslim racism. The Discovery channel pulled the films in response to a letter campaign by pro-Israel groups. Here is Fisk's summary of the incident from a speech at Concordia University in 2002: Back in 1993, I made a 3 part documentary film for the Discovery Channel in the United States, and also for Channel 4 in Britain. It was called Beirut to Bosnia and it attempted to find out why an increasing number of Muslims had come to hate the West. Indeed, the title was "Why Muslims Have Come to Hate the West.\" We filmed in Beirut, Southern Lebanon, Israel, the occupied West Bank and Gaza, Egypt, Bosnia and Croatia. . . . In due course, we discovered that Discovery was being sent American Express cards cut in half. American Express being one of the sponsors of the original series. Discovery rang me in Beirut to say they were receiving lots of letters condemning the films from various groups. Then director Mike Dutfield and I heard that Discovery had canceled the reshowing. In an imperishable letter to Dutfield, Bunting wrote - and I ask you not to laugh until the end - quote, "Given the reaction to the series on its initial airing we never scheduled a subsequent airing. So there\'s not really an issue as to any scheduled re-airing being canceled.\" When I read those words, ladies and gentlemen, I was ashamed to be a foreign correspondent. While he was never brought to trial for the charges against him during his rule, he and his followers took the country into the deepest pits of despair. As a child, the young Saloth Sar, as Pol Pot was originally named, lived well off of his father, who was a wealthy land owner more than he was a farmer. Pol Pot in Cambodian literally means Politique Potentielle, in French, or Potential Politics – a form of extreme communism in which Pot religiously believed and changed his name to match. Pol, his brother, sister, and a cousin were favored be the Kingdom Monivong, which entitled them to some privileges not bestowed upon other Cambodian families. While living in the royal palace for a time, he witnessed what feudalistic power was dealt. During this time, Pol Pot attended various French language schools, but was either not bright enough or simply did not try to pass his classes. When he failed at earning his diploma and later becoming a monk, his family sent him to France to study, where he also failed academically. Politics struck his fancy and he joined the French Communist Party in the early 1950s. Following, he gained some military know-how in Yugoslavia before returning to Cambodia. By the early 1960s, Pol Pot began teaching in a private school in Phnom Penh and began a leadership role in Cambodia’s Communist Party. When he visited China, he saw how the Cultural Revolution controlled and affected the entire country. With support from the Communist government there, he went back to Cambodia and with an ignited fervor to bring Cambodia to utopian standards – a naïve ideology that became his obsession. In the Cambodian coup of 1970, which was in support of American involvement in the country, the Khmer Rouge (or Cambodian Communists) began attacking the Cambodian army. When the U.S. began bombing other parts of the country, Cambodia began distrusting their supposed American allies. The Khmer Rouge’s popularity grew rapidly and before anyone could realize it, Pol Pot and his army had taken the capital. Pol Pot became the country’s decisive ruler, and thereafter began the torturing, murdering, and near genocide of his own people. By sending inhabitants of the city into forced labor camps, or communes, disease, starvation, and death became the norm. The country’s economy plummeted and the society became depressed and repressed. Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge were overthrown by Vietnam, but even through the 1990s, Pol Pot wreaked havoc on Cambodia. He died by suicide, murder, or heart failure in 1998 before he could be brought to trial. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963. For the show, The Discovery Channel has assembled a team of experts to set up an array of ballistic tests and trajectory analysis, as well as the latest in forensic artificial body creation. With methodical cutting-edge forensics and Zapruder film archives, the experts painstakingly show that the fatal bullet was fired from the Texas School Book Depository, not the grassy knoll. The Discovery Channel worked with Adelaide T&E Systems, an engineering company that specializes in creating exact human specimens utilized in military weaponry development. Using Kennedy’s hat size, the experts created a replica of a human head, with the size and density. A special effects team also completely recreated the Presidential limousine passenger area. JFK: Inside the Target Car "is the latest example of using breakthrough technology to authenticate scientific theories," said John Ford, president and general manager, Discovery Channel. The investigation team: - Gary Mack, Curator of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, and a 25-year veteran of Kennedy investigations - Michael Yardley, world renowned sharpshooter - Wesley Fisk, Chief Operating Officer of Adelaide T&E Systems - Tom Bevel and Steve Schlieble, veteran crime scene and forensic examiners Interviews with key players from that November day helped assemble the pieces of the puzzle. Jack McNairy and H.B. McLain are two eyewitnesses who saw the blood-splattered limo before the Secret Service ordered it cleaned and sent back to Washington, D.C. Bobby Hargis, a Dallas police officer who rode directly behind the limo, provided crucial information about the effects of gunfire. And finally, the late Nellie Connally, in one of her last recorded interviews, talked about being in the car with her husband, Texas Governor John Connally, President and Mrs. Kennedy. In the show, Yardley looked through the scope of a high-powered rifle from four different possible angles focused on a duplicate Presidential limousine. The limo was in the exact spot where Kennedy was fired on and filled with actors the same size as the passengers that day. From vantage points at the south end of the overpass, the north end of the overpass and on the grassy knoll, Yardley determined whether a shot could have come from a second gunman at any of these spots. After careful analysis of possible shot locations, the forensics team structured on a California firing range the exact distances, angles, and even wind speed in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. High-speed cameras rolled as Yardley took his best shot at the head replicas, using a Mannlicher Carcano rifle - the same type supposedly used by Lee Harvey Oswald. The results of these precision ballistics tests provide some clear answers to the events in Dealey Plaza. Comparing the splatter patterns from these test angles, with the historical evidence gleaned from eyewitness testimony and Secret Service reports, as well as an exact digitized overlay of the Zapruder film, the forensic team draws the definitive conclusion that the fatal shot could have only come from the sixth floor window of the Book Depository and not anywhere else, just as the Warren Commission determined in 1964. The film features the voices of Hank Azaria, Dylan Baker, Nick Nolte, Mark Ruffalo, Roy Scheider, Liev Schreiber, and Jeffrey Wright in an animated reenactment of the trial based on transcripts and rediscovered audio recordings. It also contains archive footage of David Dellinger, Abbie Hoffman, William Kunstler, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, and Leonard Weinglass, and of the protest and riot itself. The title is drawn from a quote by Rubin, who said, "Anyone who calls us the Chicago Seven is a racist. Because you're discrediting Bobby Seale. You can call us the Chicago Eight, but really we're the Chicago Ten, because our two lawyers went down with us." It premiered January 18, 2007 at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
