PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECOND FRONT Looks into what was discussed at secret meetings between the British authorities and Provisional IRA during the 1970s, and how Britian may have countenanced withdrawal from Northern Ireland. Examines the emergence of Sinn Fein as a political force and the bombing campaigns both in the Province and the British mainland. Also examines the prison protests in the Maze prison, and the hunger strikes, and the effects of the deaths of Bobby Sands and other hunger strikers. PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECRET WAR Concentrates on the 1980s and the relaunch of a campaign by the IRA after the death of the hunger strikers. Looks at the increase in heavy weaponry purchased and the funding and supply lines and the IRA\'s keeness to get hold of surface-to-air missiles to shoot down army helicopters. It also goes into the emergence of IRA informants and \"supergrasses\" and the effect they had on operations. PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: ENDGAME The final episode focuses on how the military stalemate of the late 80s created a context whereby the Sinn Fein leadership could persuade the IRA Army Council that the final phase of the struggle had to be political. It also shows how the stalemate paved the way for a remarkable series of secret negotiations between the Government and the IRA which made possible the cessation of 1994. The programme also describes how, despite the end of the ceasefire and the subsequent Canary Wharf and Manchester bombings, backstage efforts for peace continued, resulting in a renewed IRA ceasefire and the current all-party talks. In A Death in Tehran, FRONTLINE revisits the events of last summer, shedding new light on Neda's life and death and the movement she helped inspire. In response to the international outcry over Neda's death -- including President Obama's confirmation that he'd seen the "heartbreaking" video on YouTube -- the regime set about attempting to rewrite the story, pointing a finger at the CIA and outside agitators, the same forces they blamed for the mass street protests and allegations of vote rigging that led to the greatest upheaval in Iran since the revolution of 1979. FRONTLINE uncovers some video of Neda's killer -- a member of the Basij militia who'd been brought into Tehran by the regime's Revolutionary Guards to stamp out the "Green Revolution." A medical doctor in the crowd who had watched Neda die now watched as the crowd considered its own violence against the Basij militia member: "They started to discuss what to do with him," the doctor recalled. "They grabbed his wallet, took out his ID card and started shouting, 'He is a Basiji member; he is one of them,' and started swearing and cursing him, and he was begging for people not to harm him or kill him. ... They believed the police wouldn't do anything to him as the Basiji are really powerful and he would have easily have got away, so in all of the chaos they decided to release him." The Iranian government admits 11 protesters were killed on June 20, but doctors from three Tehran hospitals confirmed at least 34 deaths. Other bodies were buried by security forces without first being identified. In October, the regime tried to script the end of the story for Neda. But instead, Neda's mother made a very public stand. The government offered her financial help if she would blame Neda's death on opponents of the regime. All she had to do was to agree to call Neda a "martyr" for the Islamic Republic. But she refused, telling FRONTLINE: "Neda died for her country not so I could get a monthly income from the Martyr Foundation. If these officials say Neda was a martyr, why do they keep wiping off the word 'martyr' which people write in red on her gravestone?"

SYNOPSIS: This documentary "The young Honduran revolution" was made by German-Danish activist Johannes Wilm. While working for the revolutionary Nicaraguan government he snuck across the border to Honduras in early August to document the resistance movement in the neighboring Central American republic, after a military coup had overthrown Leftist president Manuel Zelaya on June 28th. By coincidence he documents how for the first time in nearly thirty years the majority of students rise up against the police in a battle of 3000 students fighting police on the campus of the Autonomous University of Honduras in Tegucigalpa on August 5th. The documentary shows where the student leaders come from, what their analysis of the current situation is, what plans they have for changing it, and what perspective for the future they see both for them personally and for the country at large. It is 90 minutes long and it is made in Spanish with English subtitles. The film has so far been shown in various cities in the south west and in 12 countries in Latin America. It has been featured by a number of Latin American magazines and in the US by the Monthly Review and the Upside Down World site. It will be shown in Los Angeles at the "Human Rights Film Festival" on the 23rd of October, then in Hermosillo, Sonora where it will be shown to journalist students of Kino University on the 27th and to other students at the University of Sonora on the 29th. Many face abuse and servitude for the rest of their lives, ostracised by their families and communities, and often forced to sell their bodies to provide food and shelter for themselves and their children. Reporter Yemi Ipaye and director Katherine Churcher begin their journey in south-eastern Nepal. Nearly half the country's population live here and child marriage is prevalent. . The most respected Hindu priests in the area tell that child widows are worse than adult widows and that the ancient custom of Sati, where a widow would throw herself on her husband's funeral pyre, was better than being a child widow. In Kathmandu, the team films an unprecedented protest by widows from all over Nepal. They are protesting against a new government policy which effectively means that men would be paid £400 if they married a widow. The widows say it will mean they are treated as commodities to be bought and sold by men. The government minister responsible for the policy says it is an incentive to encourage the remarriage of widows, which is taboo in Nepalese society, and that he has no plans to withdraw it. Before leaving Nepal the team travel to Pashupatinath Temple. A cremation is taking place. This was where many widows over the centuries would have committed Sati, by throwing themselves on their husbands' burning pyres. Although this practice is now outlawed, it's clear that in Nepal today some widows are treated as if they are living Satis. They are physically alive, but socially dead. The New York-based Toxics Targeting went through the Department of Environmental Conservation’s own database of hazardous substances spills over the past thirty years. They found 270 cases documenting fires, explosions, wastewater spills, well contamination and ecological damage related to gas drilling. Many of the cases remain unresolved. The findings are contrary to repeated government assurances that existing natural gas well regulations are sufficient to safeguard the environment and public health. The state is considering allowing for gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale watershed, the source of drinking water for 15 million people, including nine million New Yorkers. This transition would honor their heritage and support future generations by protecting their sacred land, providing electricity to their homes and creating jobs for their communities. Their story is a parable for our time, when the planet as a whole hungers for alternatives to fossil fuels. For environmental trailblazers, it’s proof that going green is not only possible—it’s the only choice we have. The POWER PATHS story begins in the 1960s, when two massive coal mines open on Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona. Between them, they produce enough coal to satisfy the unquenchable energy thirsts of Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They also comprise the single largest strip-mining complex in the world. For more than 30 years, the mines—and the Mohave Generating Station they supply—scar sacred native land, drain the natural aquifers and pollute the Southwestern skies. Meanwhile, beneath the high-tension power lines that carry electricity to the neon-saturated Vegas Strip, Native American reservation dwellers have no electricity or running water. Sickened by the economic disparity and the mounting toll on their land and health, some Navajo and Hopi tribe members begin pressuring their tribal governments not to renew the mining leases, but to no avail. As a result, a handful of grassroots organizers from both tribes join forces with The Sierra Club, the Grand Canyon Trust and the National Parks and Conservation Association to fight back. Calling themselves the Just Transition Coalition, they take on wealthy and entrenched adversaries from Peabody to Southern California Edison. They succeed in closing the power plant (and subsequently the mines) in 2005. But the ecological and moral victory comes at a cost: About half of the adults on the reservations had worked for the mines, and are now unemployed. Undeterred, the Just Transition Coalition shifts gears and heads for California, where they win a legal battle to use the shuttered Mohave plant’s cap-and-trade pollution credits to finance investment in solar panels and wind turbines for their reservations. In one scene, a Navajo mother screws a light bulb into a kitchen socket for the first time and sees it light up, enabling her children to stop depending on sunlight or dangerous kerosene lanterns in order to do their homework. She weeps in relief and gratitude. Today, more tribes are seeking investments and partnerships to create green-energy economies on the reservation, with hopes that one day, renewable energy will replace casinos as a primary means for economic development and tribal self-sufficiency. As the nation at large struggles to disengage itself from the chains of a fossil-fuel-based economy, POWER PATHS signals cause for hope that an alternative is not somewhere in the future, but possible right now. And Native Americans are leading the way. Update In June 2009, the 21st Navajo Nation Council voted 62 to 1 to establish a Navajo Green Economy Commission, according to the Sierra Club. The legislation, which is designed to take advantage of federal stimulus funds for green jobs, is intended to stimulate the economy by developing a sustainable energy infrastructure on the Navajo reservation. On September 11, 2001, the US was rocked by the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. Within less than a month, it struck back at the people it believed were responsible for those attacks and the Taliban government that was hosting them in Afghanistan. Soon, the US-backed Northern Alliance pushed back the Taliban and took over Kabul. However, winning the peace in Afghanistan has proved to be a far more lengthy and difficult process. In the alliances put together to achieve this end, there was the promise of a better future for the country. But within three years, the Taliban were back as a major force. So, eight years on, what has been achieved? Afghanistan appears to be a narco-state where corrupt politicians and commanders rule the country from their heavily fortified "poppy palaces" in the capital and civilians face the daily threat of Taliban bombs and US air strikes. Operation Enduring Freedom, the US response to 9/11, promised a better future for the country, but eight years on it appears that Afghanistan's freedom has anything but endured.
