Up Against the Wall Thursday November 19, 2009 at 8 pm on CBC-TV Twenty years ago, the world watched, spellbound, as the Berlin Wall came down. In the hopeful euphoria that followed, it seemed as if walls would be a thing of the past. Coinciding with the arrival of economic globalization, it looked like people and goods would finally be able to move freely across borders worldwide. But then 9/11 happened and, as they say, "everything changed". In the post-9/11 world, "national security" became the watchword, and it soon became clear that walls ? and sophisticated new, hi-tech versions at that - were back with a vengeance. In fact, they were proliferating all around the world, with over a dozen new walls going up since the Berlin Wall came down. Up Against the Wall, produced by Gail McIntyre, and written and directed by documentary filmmaker Eileen Thalenberg, looks at this growing phenomenon of new wall-building, focusing on three hot spots around the world, where extremely controversial walls have gone up. Thalenberg travels along the huge expanse (and expense!) of the 'Tortilla Wall' that the United States is constructing along its border with Mexico. She also explores both sides of the elaborate wall and fence system Israel has built between itself and the West Bank. And, finally, Thalenberg journeys to the autonomous Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the coast of Morocco. The walls surrounding those little-known European enclaves in Africa give us a glimpse into the new "Fortress Europe". With those walls blocking entry into Europe, desperate Africans risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean Sea in flimsy boats provided by human traffickers. As Thalenberg reveals, they often wind up, by the thousands, in detention camps across Europe. Most are eventually sent home. The fall of the Berlin Wall was an act of freedom, symbolizing the triumph of democracy over totalitarianism. "The great irony," says Thalenberg, "is that the three new walls we focus on in the film were all constructed by democracies. What we found repeatedly was that walls have a stated agenda and a hidden one. Walls are often built in the name of national security, but the real reason is to keep people out, though, of course, nobody much wants to say that." In a traumatized post 9/11 world, a wall is an easy sell. It gives the impression that something is being done to protect people. In fact, walls are an expression of what is most primitive in us all ? the fear of "the other". "In the short term a wall may address some of those problems," says Thalenberg. "But we found that in the longer term, in each case, there were unexpected, sometimes alarming impacts. Very often the wall made things worse." Up Against the Wall poses the questions: Do walls, in fact, work? What are the real costs both in financial and human terms? How do walls affect people living on both sides? The film also explores the themes of borders, sovereignty, migration and human rights. The experience of making the film turned out to be one of the most difficult of Thalenberg's career for personal reasons. "I started my own life in a refugee camp with my parents, and here I was filming in refugee and detention camps. At a camp in Sicily we met an Ethiopian father holding his little girl in his arms and as I stood looking at them I thought, 'That was me and my father all those years ago.'" Man in the Sand (1999)

Man in the Sand is a 1999 music documentary that chronicles the collaboration between Billy Bragg and Wilco, which involved the musicians creating new music to accompany lyrics that were written decades earlier by folk singer Woody Guthrie. The project, which was organized by Woody's daughter Nora, spawned two albums: Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998, and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, released in 2000. The film begins with Bragg in Guthrie's original hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma, and follows along as Bragg travels to other Guthrie haunts in Texas, California, and finally, New York. Much of the documentary is also spent at the recording sessions in Chicago (December 1997) and Dublin, Ireland (January 1998). Most of the tracks from both albums were recorded at these sessions.

PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: SECRET WAR Concentrates on the 1980s and the relaunch of a campaign by the IRA after the death of the hunger strikers. Looks at the increase in heavy weaponry purchased and the funding and supply lines and the IRA\'s keeness to get hold of surface-to-air missiles to shoot down army helicopters. It also goes into the emergence of IRA informants and \"supergrasses\" and the effect they had on operations. PROVOS: THE IRA AND SINN FEIN: ENDGAME The final episode focuses on how the military stalemate of the late 80s created a context whereby the Sinn Fein leadership could persuade the IRA Army Council that the final phase of the struggle had to be political. Sam’s crime: he was attempting to smuggle almost 200 kilograms of marijuana, “B.C. Bud”. Only a few days after his arrest, Sam hanged himself in his jail cell. In Over the Edge, Linden MacIntyre takes us into the world of drug smuggling in B.C. and the role in it of young people like Sam Brown. Sam was an extreme sports enthusiast, who thrived on the adrenaline of risk taking. He grew up in the B.C. interior, living in Nelson, where the flourishing mountain biking scene offered him new challenges. Rugged and picturesque, Nelson is a hotbed for the young and unconventional, a magnet for extreme sports enthusiasts—and a centre for the lucrative, underground marijuana industry. The homegrown pot, “B.C. Bud”, pours billions of illegal dollars into local economies in B.C. Huge demand for the drug has allowed Nelson to ride out normal economic swings. But “B.C. Bud” also fuels a multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise on B.C.’s lower mainland and the United States, sustained largely by a core group of thrill-seekers like Sam—young people who smuggle drugs for the sheer high of the risk and their addiction to the money. The film follows an intertribal coalition as they fight to transform their local economies by replacing coal mines and smog-belching power plants with renewable energy technologies. This transition would honor their heritage and support future generations by protecting their sacred land, providing electricity to their homes and creating jobs for their communities. Their story is a parable for our time, when the planet as a whole hungers for alternatives to fossil fuels. For environmental trailblazers, it’s proof that going green is not only possible—it’s the only choice we have. The POWER PATHS story begins in the 1960s, when two massive coal mines open on Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona. Between them, they produce enough coal to satisfy the unquenchable energy thirsts of Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. They also comprise the single largest strip-mining complex in the world. For more than 30 years, the mines—and the Mohave Generating Station they supply—scar sacred native land, drain the natural aquifers and pollute the Southwestern skies. Meanwhile, beneath the high-tension power lines that carry electricity to the neon-saturated Vegas Strip, Native American reservation dwellers have no electricity or running water. Sickened by the economic disparity and the mounting toll on their land and health, some Navajo and Hopi tribe members begin pressuring their tribal governments not to renew the mining leases, but to no avail. As a result, a handful of grassroots organizers from both tribes join forces with The Sierra Club, the Grand Canyon Trust and the National Parks and Conservation Association to fight back. Calling themselves the Just Transition Coalition, they take on wealthy and entrenched adversaries from Peabody to Southern California Edison. They succeed in closing the power plant (and subsequently the mines) in 2005. But the ecological and moral victory comes at a cost: About half of the adults on the reservations had worked for the mines, and are now unemployed. Undeterred, the Just Transition Coalition shifts gears and heads for California, where they win a legal battle to use the shuttered Mohave plant’s cap-and-trade pollution credits to finance investment in solar panels and wind turbines for their reservations. In one scene, a Navajo mother screws a light bulb into a kitchen socket for the first time and sees it light up, enabling her children to stop depending on sunlight or dangerous kerosene lanterns in order to do their homework. She weeps in relief and gratitude. Today, more tribes are seeking investments and partnerships to create green-energy economies on the reservation, with hopes that one day, renewable energy will replace casinos as a primary means for economic development and tribal self-sufficiency. As the nation at large struggles to disengage itself from the chains of a fossil-fuel-based economy, POWER PATHS signals cause for hope that an alternative is not somewhere in the future, but possible right now. And Native Americans are leading the way. Update In June 2009, the 21st Navajo Nation Council voted 62 to 1 to establish a Navajo Green Economy Commission, according to the Sierra Club. The legislation, which is designed to take advantage of federal stimulus funds for green jobs, is intended to stimulate the economy by developing a sustainable energy infrastructure on the Navajo reservation. Being a thief must have become a habit, and now I’ve become a real one!” —Azad Jalaluddin, pickpocket On the hot and crowded streets of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), three thousand pickpockets ply their trade every day, three hundred of them circulating through police custody at any given time. JOURNALS OF A WILY SCHOOL takes viewers inside the world of these petty thieves and the detectives who doggedly pursue them, day in and day out. With unprecedented access, first-time director Sudeshna Bose follows a young and talented pickpocket named Azad Jalaluddin, revealing in cinema verité style the many layers of his life. The eldest of five children, the 22-year-old lives with his family. While his sisters go to school and his father works in the wholesale fish trade, Azad spends his days picking pockets, using drugs and binging on Bollywood films. His mystified father voices frustration over the wayward son who fancies himself a don and compares himself to the stars of the big screen. Azad speaks candidly about his profession, seemingly delighted to have a film crew following him about his day. He happily shares the tricks of his trade, which in Kolkata have been elevated to an art form. To hone his craft, Azad attends an unusual school where a master pickpocket leads his attentive disciples through a series of challenges. In one, they must reach their hands into a bucket of water and retrieve a coin without creating ripples. In another, the students must carefully use a razor blade to slit a cloth wrapped around a melon, without cutting the melon’s smooth skin. Although a thief, Azad maintains an ethical stance in certain areas. As a matter of course, he returns wallets to their rightful owners—usually by mail—after he has pilfered all cash and valuables. Following a particularly lucrative haul, he returns some small change to the wallet so its owner can buy cigarettes. “Have to help the poor guy,” he says. But Azad’s ethics are put to the test when he inevitably lands himself in jail. Police detective Bidhan Saha, a hard-nosed cop with a fatherly bent, takes Azad under his wing, offering him a pardon and a salary if he will turn in his fellow thieves. The detective is convinced of Azad’s promise and works diligently to build rapport, visiting his home and even taking him on a beach vacation. Given a second chance and the hope for redemption, what choice will Azad make? Collaboration or incarceration? Loyalty or self-interest? Respectability or the lure of the city streets? As it follows Azad’s dilemma, the film offers a fascinating look into crime and criminal justice in a city recognized the world over for its intense poverty. The former home of Mother Teresa, Kolkata—like much of India—is also a city in transition: a teeming metropolis with a growing economy and a burgeoning middle class. With more capital in the city, the stakes for those on both sides of the law are set ever higher. JOURNALS OF A WILY SCHOOL is a classic tale of cops and robbers, set in changing and paradoxical times—for even as the ancient city creeps towards modernity, many of its inhabitants, like Azad, will remain caught in the age-old struggle to survive. Broken Heroes Aired: Oct 30, 2009 Every November 11 we mark Remembrance Day to honour the sacrifices made by those who serve their country in wartime. We remember, especially, the dead and those who carry the physical wounds of war. But, what of those with the invisible injuries, the crippling wounds of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? In Broken Heroes, Gillian Findlay introduces us to three Canadian soldiers, recently returned from Afghanistan: Jeff, Matt and Dave. All three speak candidly about the hell that now consumes their lives: flashbacks hurtling them back to the danger of the war zone, grief for dead comrades, their ongoing battles with addiction, even suicide attempts. PTSD is not a new phenomenon. In the First World War, it was called “shell shock”, never really understood, and never adequately dealt with. But, the urgency to find a treatment has never been greater. By the time Canada’s combat mission in Afghanistan is over in 2011, 35,000 Canadian men and women will have served there. Using the military’s own arguably conservative estimate, as many as 2,000 of those could be coming home with PTSD.
