This documentary profiles Zen Master Edward Espe Brown and shows the art of Zen and cooking. Espe Brown first became interested in baking as an 11-year kid when he realized the startling difference between mass-produced supermarket bread and the fresh homemade stuff. When he asked his mother to teach him how to bake, however, she said "No, yeast makes me nervous."

Brown became the head cook at the Tassajara Mountain Centre in California when he was in his early 20s, and has been practicing the art of Zen Buddhism and cooking for more than 40 years. As a chef, he is typically short-tempered and exacting, but as a Buddhist master he is exactly the opposite. Director Dörrie (Men, Naked) sets her camera on Espe Brown as he travels from the Scheibbs Buddhist Centre in Austria to Tassajara, offering cooking seminars based upon the principles established 800 years ago by Master Eihei Dogen Zenji, the founder of the Japanese Soto-Zen school. Master Dogen wrote about the necessity of treating food as if it was as valuable as your eyesight. From washing rice, to preparing vegetables, every action could be a path to Zen. Or as the master said, "When you're washing the rice, wash the rice." A charming taskmaster who regularly punctures his holiness with moments of self-deprecation and humour, Espe Brown's observations on modern culture, cooking and human foibles are often as acerbic and hilarious as they are profound. --Brett-Lloyd

"When a twenty-year-old bomb explodes in an abandoned mansion in modern-day Berlin, the evidence points to a notrious late 1980's anarchist group. As the police start to look for them, the six rebels reunite for the first time in 12 years to come up with a plan to protect themselves. But sparks fly when the group must reconcile their youthful ideals with their new lives and pick up the pieces of the relationships they left behind."

"In 1987, a collective of anarchists are squatting in an abandoned building in Kreuzberg and making propaganda films. In one of these films, they demonstrate how to make a homemade bomb out of a pressure cooker and chemicals available over the counter, and they plant the bomb in a vacant villa in Grunewald. However, the timer sticks, and the bomb does not go off until 12 years later, when it is jostled by a real estate broker and a potential buyer. They are injured in the blast, and the police are under pressure to hunt down the "terrorists.

Two of the original anarchists, Tim (Schweiger) and Hotte (Martin Feifel), still live in the original building and engage in anti-police graffiti, anti-gentrification protests and petty theft. The current owner of the building, a nouveau riche Turk named Bülent, cannot evict them, because Hotte is disabled, having lost his legs. (It is later revealed that they were crushed by a water cannon during a riot.)

While Tim is out, the police raid the building in a sweep for clues to the bombing and confiscate their cache of old films, including the incriminating bomb-making film. They cart the films off to the fortresslike police headquarters, a former Prussian military barracks.

One by one, Tim and Hotte visit the former members of their group to warn them of the bust. They are distressed by the news, having gone on with their lives: Nele (Nadja Uhl) is a single mother of two young children; "Terror" (Matthias Matschke) is an attorney; Maik (Sebastian Blomberg) runs an advertising agency that exploits radical imagery; and Flo (Doris Schretzmayer), Tim's former lover, has evidently gone bourgeoise- although her circumstances are never fully explained- and is about to get married. They balk when Tim and Hotte propose breaking into the police headquarters and destroying the evidence, but Terror's counter-suggestion that they should turn themselves in is met with even stronger disagreement, and finally the former radicals devise the plan of infiltrating the headquarters by pretending to be a television news crew."

In the Spring of 2003, filmmaker James Miller and reporter Saira Shah, the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning duo behind the Afghanistan documentaries UNHOLY WAR and BENEATH THE VEIL, traveled to the Gaza Strip to look inside the lives of children growing up in a war-torn world of unremitting violence, death, and racial and religious hatred. The documentary examines the lives of 12-year-old Ahmed; his best friend, Mohammad, who have grown up surrounded by messages of hate against Israel (whose military presence in their town is a constant), and taught that the greatest glory is to die a martyr; and Najila, a 16-year-old girl who lives in a particularly dangerous neighborhood surrounded by Israeli sniper towers. Though Mohammad's mother makes a desperate plea for peace, the boys throw rocks at Israeli tanks, build homemade bombs, and are recruited by a paramilitary group. Meanwhile, Israeli tanks roll into Najila's neighborhood, crushing and exploding homes in a search for militants.

Directed by British TV cameraman James Miller, Death in Gaza was supposed to be an HBO documentary about children living in the Arab-Israeli war zone. However, Miller was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier during production. Producer Saira Shah compiled the footage and completed the film. The result is a harrowing, intimate, and deeply moving film that tells the terrible story of life and death in the Gaza Strip.

For generations the greatest perceived threat to the West has been nuclear. But the greatest threat is actually a far less sophisticated piece of weaponry, comprising just a stolen vehicle and a boot-load of homemade explosives. Crude and deadly, this threat is the car bomb. From the team behind the critically acclaimed Cult of the Suicide Bomber comes this two-part series.

Ex-CIA operative Robert Baer, whose life story was depicted by Oscar-winner George Clooney in hit Hollywood movie Syriana , charts for the first time the evolution of this simple, but most deadly of insurgent weapons.

He travels through London, South Armagh, Oklahoma, Sicily, Iraq and New York, and using the access only available to a former intelligence officer, secures interviews with former members of the IRA, the Cosa Nostra and student radicals.

Combining this with never-before-seen footage, this major exploration into the methodology of terrorism shows just how serious a threat the car bomb is and sets about to answer the big question: Can we defeat it?

Baer is obviously a man who knows his stuff and he's a good interviewer, whose deceptively easy-going manner draws forth some appalling stories of mass murder in the pursuit of a cause. Continuing his look at the nature of terrorism today he examines of what he describes as "the deadliest weapon of the 21st century".

Baer looks at the car bomb's origins finding the actually go much further back, to 1920 when an Italian anarchist (or so it's believed) steered a horse-drawn cart packed with explosives into Wall Street. The blast tore at the heart of the New York financial district and killed more than 40 people.

Baer tracks the development of a terrifyingly simple, cheap and appallingly effective weapon of guerrilla war from this first outrage to its devastating contemporary prevalence. Along the way, he revisits Beirut and recalls the bombing of the city's American Embassy in 1983, which killed many of his friends and CIA colleagues.

Al Jazeera - The Rocket Men (about the dudes firing Qassams from Gaza)

Many Qassam rocket fighters have lost family
members to Israeli military attacks
Over the last few months, Israel has been threatening to mount a large-scale invasion over parts of the Gaza Strip, in response to Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli collective farms and cities.

As the governing authorities in Gaza, Hamas have refused to condemn rocket-firing, arguing they are a legitimate weapon of resistance.

The homemade rockets were first introduced by Hamas in the 2000 Intifada as a form of retaliation against Israel's incursions.

But today, Israel claims that its continuing blockade of Gaza and its moves to reduce the Gaza Strip's power supplies is a direct consequence of the rocket attacks.

Their actions are widely criticized for being collective punishment of the Palestinian people - but Israelis view the firing of the Qassam rockets to also be collective punishment.

Israel has tried to halt the Qassam threat by
raids on metal works in Gaza
While the civilian death toll from the rockets is low, the psychological price that Israelis are paying is clearly high.

A recent poll indicates that 64 per cent of Israelis want their government to negotiate with Hamas to broker a ceasefire.

Could there be an end in sight for the war of the rockets?

Paul Martin gains unique access to a Qassam rocket launching team in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli helicopter pilots charged with hunting them down.

Category: Documentary
Description:
The life of Haitian radio journalist and human rights activist, Jean Dominique, told through historical footage of Haiti; interviews with Dominique and his wife, Michele Montas; and footage shot before his assassination in April 2000.

Amazon.com
Jonathan Demme has always had a thing for Haiti. With The Agronomist, the Oscar winning director of The Silence of the Lambs takes his Haitian passion for a serious and considerably more personal turn in a documentary profiling journalist and radio pioneer Jean Dominique. Demme first became intrigued by Dominique in 1991 when he undertook a series of informal video interviews. He returned to his subject many times over the next decade, sometimes in Haiti and sometimes during extended periods when Dominique was in the U.S., a political exile from his homeland. When Demme began his documentary, he certainly couldnt have planned for its end--the assassination of Dominique outside his Port au Prince radio station in 2000. As The Agronomist makes clear, it was a blatantly political crime and one that remains unsolved. The title refers to Dominiques original vocation helping farmers in the rural communities of Haiti. He came from the upper classes, but continued his battles in representing his countrys poor and dispossessed even as his career path changed to professional broadcaster. As operator of the independent Radio Haiti Inter from 1960 until his death, Dominique became a hero to the masses and a frequent enemy of the government. In extensive interview segments, Dominique exudes the charismatic good humor and mischievous zeal that brought him fame and infamy from the various constituents of Haitis notorious political landscape. An impish, animated figure with sparkling eyes and naughty grin, Dominique gleefully or angrily recounts confrontations with the authority of Haitis Duvalier father-and-son dictators, and later the Aristide regime. The Agronomist is very much a homemade affair, but by no means amateurish. Using mostly raw camcorder video, Demme makes a stylish statement with his visuals and Dominique's words. He also gets plenty of help from a sensational soundtrack by another beloved Haitian hero, Wyclef Jean. The Agronomist is an apt history lesson about Haiti's legacy of political turmoil and a powerful testimonial about patriotism in the face of oppression. --Ted Fry
