A beautiful alien is sent from the planet Epsilon to pass judgment on the shameful way in which humans have mishandled their planet. Set in a near future in which humanity has made great strides in cleaning up the Earth, it begins as a grandmother tells her granddaughters a story from the past. Her tale begins in the desert outback during the dark times when people were actively ruining their planet. The naked alien is placed upon the desert where she eventually meets a surveyor who quickly gives her some clothing. As the two travel across the land, the alien constantly admonishes him for his race's carelessness and greed. She informs him that other intelligent life forms consider humans hopeless failures. Using her ability to travel instantly to any of Earth's locales, she takes the bewildered surveyor on a whirlwind tour to prove her point. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Stunning cinematography of the Australian landscape as well!

Robert Fisk - From Beirut to Bosnia (BANNED FROM DISCOVERY)

Category: Documentary
Description:

An example of how advertising and lobbying groups censor American news, this three part documentary by the famous middle east war correspondent Robert Fisk was banned by the Discovery channel in 1993. The films seek to explain the rise of anti-Western sentiment throughout the ?Muslim world? (from the Middle East to the Balkins, the range of the former Ottoman Empire) by highlighting the oppressiveness of Western-supported governments (Israel and Egypt, in particular) and the West\'s broader anti-Muslim racism. The Discovery channel pulled the films in response to a letter campaign by pro-Israel groups.

Here is Fisk's summary of the incident from a speech at Concordia University in 2002:
Back in 1993, I made a 3 part documentary film for the Discovery Channel in the United States, and also for Channel 4 in Britain. It was called Beirut to Bosnia and it attempted to find out why an increasing number of Muslims had come to hate the West. Indeed, the title was "Why Muslims Have Come to Hate the West.\" We filmed in Beirut, Southern Lebanon, Israel, the occupied West Bank and Gaza, Egypt, Bosnia and Croatia. . . .

In due course, we discovered that Discovery was being sent American Express cards cut in half. American Express being one of the sponsors of the original series. Discovery rang me in Beirut to say they were receiving lots of letters condemning the films from various groups. Then director Mike Dutfield and I heard that Discovery had canceled the reshowing. In an imperishable letter to Dutfield, Bunting wrote - and I ask you not to laugh until the end - quote, "Given the reaction to the series on its initial airing we never scheduled a subsequent airing. So there\'s not really an issue as to any scheduled re-airing being canceled.\" When I read those words, ladies and gentlemen, I was ashamed to be a foreign correspondent.

There are examples of these lobbying efforts by pro-Israel groups (and correspondence with the Discovery channel) at the following:

Part I: The Martyr's Smile:
This Films for the Humanities production focuses its capable eye on Lebanon's guerilla war that aims to liberate southern Lebanon from Israeli control. The scope of this tragic conflict is brought into sharp focus in this documentary through the use of extensive interviews with participants from the Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad movements, views of civilian casualties caused by Israeli air attacks, and photographic evidence of the ongoing destruction of life and property in the region. The viewer should be advised that this video contains some disturbing scenes of this conflict.

Part II: The Road to Palestine:
Another in the Beirut to Bosnia series from Films for the Humanities, The Road to Palestine provides the viewer with a glimpse into the ongoing conflict in the region around Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. Through interviews with members of the militant Islamic group Hamas, as well as Zionist settlers and Jewish refugees, this documentary succeeds at revealing some of this tragic situation.

Part III: To the Ends of the Earth:
Another in the compelling series Beirut to Bosnia from Films for the Humanities, To the Ends of the Earth compares the plight of Muslims in Egypt and Bosnia. Though separated by geography and the distinct cultures in which they live their lives, this video reveals the feeling of betrayal by the West experienced by these two Muslim communities. Interviews with Islamic freedom fighters and war casualties shed light on the dynamics of the ongoing struggle for the survival of these communities.

One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there's a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can't remember a thing anymore about that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, he decides to meet and interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth about that time and about himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to creep up in surreal images.

Whatever you think you know about our [American] election systems or Congresswoman
Cynthia McKinney, this film will make you question further why the news media fails
to accurately inform the public. Directed by GNN's Ian Inaba, creator of Eminem's
"Mosh" music video, American Blackout critically examines the contemporary tactics
used to control our democratic process and silence voices of political dissent.

Many have heard of the alleged voting irregularities that occurred during the
presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Until now, these incidents have gone under-
reported and are commonly written-off as insignificant rumors or unintentional
mishaps resulting from an overburdened election system.

American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from
Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia
McKinney. McKinney not only took an active role investigating these election
debacles, but has found herself in the middle of her own after publicly questioning
the Bush Administration about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Featuring: Congressional members John Conyers, John Lewis, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones,
Bernie Sanders and journalists Greg Palast and Bob Fitrakis.

Kalinovski Square

Category: Documentary
Description:

Kalinovski square is an "underground" documentary about a suppressed people fighting for their freedom. The starting point of this documentary, takes place in Minsk - the capital of the former Soviet Republic of Belarus, which often is referred to as the last dictatorship in Europe! In March 2006 a rigged president election was arranged, so the "dictator", Alexander Lukaschenko, was re-elected with 82 % of the votes. Independent observers have estimated Lukashenko could merely win 40 % of the votes due to massive propaganda and oppression. Since Lukasheko's presidency started in 1994, he has turned Belarus into a more dictatorian country based on a Soviet style authoritarian leadership. In much of Belarus, the notion that the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 is not valid, the Soviet Union just diminished and gradually turned into present day Belarus - much of the Soviet system and mentality goes on in the country. Unlike Russia, the country didn't undergo any remarkable transition from plan economy to market reforms, thus avoiding to much chaos and instability in society, but the price has been an increasing lack of personal freedom and economic development. Thus the young generation got enough of corruption, plan economy, censorship, state harassment, lack of hope and arbitrary use of state intervention by the secret police, which still goes by their old name: the KGB! For the first time the people were brave enough to defy the regime on a large scale and show their resentment towards the president, led by the young generation in the so called "jeans revolution" for freedom.

This documentary is Yuri Chashchevatsky's most celebrated film and follows a long-standing and personally dangerous conflict with the Lukaschenko regime. A conflict, in which independent journalists and system critics have been jailed, killed or disappeared in mysterious ways, as the regime regards basic human rights, such as freedom of the speech, press and assembly etc., as Western hypocrisy. Thus Belarus is the only European country denied a membership to the Council of Europe, due to its massive repression - even Russia is a member!

The plot of the documentary tries to uncover the primitive and ugly mechanisms of a dictatorship, but also brings hope by letting the young generation of Belarus come to word. They dream of a future Belarus, where the government doesn't fear its own people nor the opposite situation, in which the people fear its own government.

The style of the documentary is much inspired by Michael More's funny and ironic distance, of criticizing the government, as seen in his famous documentary - Fahrenheit 9/11 -. However, at the same time, Kalinovski Square tries to give an explanation to the underlying reasons why Europe's last dictatorship withstands from within. The movie is a discovery to what many people in the West takes for granted, and what people in other countries must fight for to achieve - good governance based on the rule of law, freedom and democracy.

The movie gives an insight into one of the most isolated countries in Europe, in which a "cold civil war" is raging against the part of the population who urge for change. A country which evidently will appear more frequently on the news bulletin in the coming years, as the economic decline will increase and the people's desire for freedom will increase.

The documentary's finest quality assurance, comes from the committee of censorship in the Republic of Belarus, as they banned the documentary. Even to posses the documentary is a crime against the state, and is punishable in Belarus.
