By Dom Rotheroe and Antony Butts On October 25, Maksharip Aushev, an Ingush businessman and civil opposition leader, was murdered by unknown gunmen who sprayed his car with more than 60 bullets. Shortly before his death, filmmakers Dom Rotheroe and Antony Butts spoke with him for their film on the conflict in the Russian republic of Ingushetia. Recently, the Russian republic of Ingushetia has become the most dangerous place in the Russian federation. Endemic corruption combined with a battle between Islamic extremists and unaccountable Moscow-backed security forces has plunged the area into violence. The conflict has left many Ingushetians in despair; their human rights suppressed and their faith in the authorities in tatters. It is a cycle of bloody atrocity and counter-atrocity that seems to have no end. While the Ingush stayed out of the Chechens' recent wars for independence from Russia, this did not prevent the violence from finally spilling over. In June 2004, rebels attacked Ingushetia's main city of Nazran and killed scores of security officials. With Russia by then pretty much in control of Chechnya, Chechen rebels wanted to spread the war into neighbouring Muslim republics. And in Ingushetia discontent had been growing ever since Vladimir Putin, the then Russian president, installed the unpopular Murat Zyazikov as president there in 2002. 'Disappeared' Trapped in the middle of the decade-long dirty war are 500,000 Ingush. Maksharip Aushev, a businessman and civil opposition leader, told us that he carries a gun "because it's dangerous out there". "At any moment they can turn up in camouflage and kidnap you - and then you'll just be disappeared. "Although the gun will not protect you at least you'll manage to do something so they don't torture you, don't take you away - so you don't just go missing like most people usually do here," he said. Things changed for businessman Maksharip three years ago when his nephew, who had refused to become an informant, and son were snatched off a train by security forces. They were taken to Chechnya and tortured. "As soon as my son and nephew were abducted, I stepped out," he explained, saying that he never wanted to be involved in politics but felt forced into it. Maksharip blamed the Russian security forces (FSB) and rallied public protests, which led to the release of his son and nephew. In the process he also kicked off widespread civil opposition to the regime and became one of the most outspoken leaders of the opposition to Zyazikov, a former KGB officer and an ally of Putin. According to Magomed Mutsolgov, the co-founder of the local human rights group Mashr, it was after Zyazikov became president that anyone even vaguely suspected of opposing the regime began getting visits from the security forces. Mutsolgov co-founded Mashr when his younger brother disappeared four years ago. "Altogether we have had over 500 cases of kidnapping. Some of those people were found dead," he says. 'Nothing left to lose' The violence has been increasing exponentially. Mashr estimates that 212 people were killed in 2008. By August 2009 that number had already been reached. Yet violence by the security forces is only one side of Ingushetia's mayhem. In the last seven years, Islamic militants have killed over 200 policemen, soldiers and government officials. The most devastating attack happened in August 2009 when a suicide bomber drove a truck into Nazran's main police station, killing 24 people and injuring more than 160. In recent years religious extremists among the rebels have turned the war for Chechen independence into a jihad for a Sharia-based emirate covering all of Russia's Caucasian Muslim republics. They have also started targeting civilians whom they deem un-Islamic. Recently, two sisters, aged 52 and 60, were shot to death in a roadside kiosk, supposedly for selling alcohol. "They are psychotic. Putting seven, eight bullets into women. What Sharia law are they talking about?" the victim's sister asks. "We have nothing more to be afraid of. We have gone through all this and are ready for anything. We have lost our parents, husbands. What else can we be afraid of? We have nothing left to lose." Yet even this family lay the final blame less on the militants than on the authorities and the lawlessness and corruption they believe Zyazikov fostered. Poverty Ingushetia is not only Russia's most violent republic. It is also its poorest. "Zyazikov declared that over 70 factories had been built in the republic, that the unemployment problem had been solved, etc etc. We risked our lives trying to prove to the Russian government that there were no factories, that the huge amounts of money allocated to us were simply being fiddled away by Zyazikov and his people," Maksharip said. By October 2008, opposition to Zyazikov had grown to such a pitch and the violence and corruption had become so brazen that Moscow finally replaced him with the popular ex-general, Yunus-bek Yevkurov. The new leader set out to tackle the corruption and violence and brought advisors from the civil opposition into his administration. He also sacked some corrupt officials, tried to initiate talks with the rebels and gained the public's trust. But then, on June 22, 2009, his presidential convoy was rammed by a suicide bomber. Yevkurov ended up in a critical condition in hospital. Extra-judicial executions In his absence, and with the Kremlin demanding even better results against the rebels, allegations of extra-judicial executions by the security forces began flooding in. Many believe it is Russia's FSB, the former KGB, that is orchestrating the cycle of violence in Ingushetia. Their agents have even been caught firing on Ingush policemen, raising suspicions that Moscow is deliberately keeping the fractious north Caucasus destablised in order to justify its controlling military presence. Others believe the motive is also the money that those in power can make from conflict. "As the Russian saying goes, 'It is good fishing in troubled waters.' These kind of civil wars are started to make it easier to steal money," Maksharip said. Suspicion Suspicion of the FSB here is reminiscent of Soviet times. Several human rights campaigners have been killed in the north Caucasus in the last few years. Aslambek Paev, a human rights campaigner, told us: "Everything is monitored. You have to be very careful and observant when you work. Probably I'm the next one. "What difference does it make for us? We know we're dead anyway, that sooner or later they'll kill us." Yevkurov recovered from the attack on him and returned to office. He has since sacked his entire cabinet for making problems worse in his absence. But it is yet to be seen how far his promised reforms will go - or indeed how effective they can be in a land which both the militants and elements of Russia's power structures seem determined to keep on the boil. Losing control One month before his death, the security forces had stopped Maksharip's car and attempted to take him into custody after he left a government meeting. He escaped only because a crowd of motorists, including an aide to the governor, surrounded him. "If I had been a half-metre closer, they would have tied me up and I would have disappeared without a trace," he told Caucasian Knot, a website that covers the region. Yevkurov has reached out to human rights activists and the opposition, offering them a degree of protection, but Aushev's killing suggests that he, and by extension the Kremlin, may be losing control over the overlapping law enforcement agencies fighting a growing Islamist insurgency in the region. Though deep in mourning, Maksharip Aushev's family agreed to our film being broadcast. His assassination highlights the continuing perils faced by anyone who seeks to defend basic freedoms in Ingushetia, raising fears of further violence in the region.

More than 500 people were also injured. It was the deadliest bombing in Iraq in two years. The blasts targeted the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Public Works and the Baghdad provincial government. Dozens of civil servants were among the dead. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki visited the site of the bombings and blamed al-Qaeda and former remnants of Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime. He said the attacks would not affect the political process or parliamentary elections due in January. US troops have been called in to help with the investigation. [includes rush transcript] Showdown in Chicago: Protesters Greet American Bankers Association Conference When the American Bankers Association scheduled their annual meeting in Chicago for this week, they probably weren’t expecting the reception they’ve received. Instead of a quiet convention in a downtown hotel, the ABA has been greeted by a parallel gathering of thousands of people in what organizers call the “Showdown in Chicago.” Spearheaded by the group National People’s Action, organizers have tried to bring together a cross-section of Americans affected by the financial meltdown, including homeowners, renters, farmers, workers and retirees. The Showdown kicked off Sunday when protesters entered the lobby of the hotel where the ABA delegates are gathering. [includes rush transcript] 100 Days of Resistance: Al Jazeera's Avi Lewis Reports from Honduras In Honduras, the conflict between the coup regime and supporters of the ousted president Manuel Zelaya remains at a standstill. Talks broke down last week after the coup regime refused to drop its objection to Zelaya’s return to office. Zelaya has accused the regime of trying to drag out negotiations until the presidential elections it plans to hold next month. Zelaya’s supporters are boycotting the elections, and the international community has refused to recognize them. The Canadian journalist and Al Jazeera English correspondent Avi Lewis recently traveled to Honduras for a rare look at the grassroots movement against the coup regime. Chumbawamba 1982-2000

Chumbawamba is a Leeds based English anarchist music group. It evolved from its punk roots, through pop, techno, and various other styles, to the folk group which it is now. The band is known for its polyphony and its non-conformant lyrics. The band was formed in 1982 from two other bands based in Yorkshire, The Passion Killers and Chimp Eats Banana. They released a series of albums (such as Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records and the a capella album English Rebel Songs) and singles on their own Agit-Pop label before moving to One Little Indian in the early 90s. On One Little Indian, Chumbawamba released three albums, Slap!, Shhh, and Anarchy, on which influences of techno music are noticeable. The songs for these albums were written in a period when dance culture was thriving and the band were also influenced by it. The music had turned into a more popular sound, which they emphasized was to spread the message more effectively. Touring for Anarchy, the concert at Leeds was recorded for the live album “Showbusiness!”. The last album released on One Little Indian is Swingin’ with Raymond (1995). The albums first six songs are about (the right to) love and ends with seven songs loaded with hate (in the broadest sense of the word: it includes a song about anorexia nervosa). Anarchy or not, the band signed to EMI by 1997. At EMI, Chumbawamba had brief mainstream success, with the singles Tubthumping and Amnesia, taken from Tubthumper. Like Slap! and Shhh, the album was noticeably influenced by techno music. The new Chumbawamba fans needed for an overview, EMI might have thought. English hard subtitles Klaus Barbie (born 1913 near Bonn in Germany) was an SS-officer and the commandant of the secret Nazi police Gestapo in Lyon (German-occupied France) where he resided in Hotel Terminus. There he and his Gestapo underlings conducted their interrogations of detainees. Torture was applied on a regular basis (beatings, drowning, burning, ice baths, forced watching of relatives or friends being tortured, etc.). Many victims report that Barbie seemed to get a kick out of inflicting pain on them. Barbie was known as the "butcher of Lyon". Hotel Terminus became a symbol of the last stop before death and for the total loss of humanity. The film shows interviews with Barbie's victims, class mates, neighbours, subordinates, sympathisers and business partners. Irish History In Song v 3

Irish native Paul Dunne has created an exceptional resource and online book at http://ireland.dyn.dhs.org/A_History_of_Ireland_in_Song.html, detailing the History of Ireland through its popular songs from prehistory to the modern armistice. About a year and a half ago, another uploader went to a considerable amount of trouble to collect many of the songs as mp3Γ??s in a torrent to accompany this website. He/She subsequently created an improved version, and then apparently dropped off the scene. Much thanks to this OP. The problem was that the files were badly labeled, and still only covered about half the songs in DunneΓ??s book. There was also only one cover to choose from. This is my favorite kind of music, so I reordered the torrent file to include every song in the book, and began to collect as many covers as I possibly could, as well as to correct the tags wherever possible. IΓ??ve used my spare time over the past month to research multiple sites and tracks, track down rare covers, convert files to mp3, and to correct tags. As of today, the only five songs of the original 88 that are still missing from the collection are: ClareΓ??s Dragoons Rouse, Hibernians Joe Brady Ring Money Long March To Derry All other songs have at least a single cover. I am asking all folks who download the torrent and bother to read this to please let me know if they have any of the missing songs, or covers that are not here, or better quality mp3Γ??s (NO FLAC!!!!) of some of the scratchy LP recordings. My email address is included in the read me file of the torrent. A WORD doc of the entire book is included as well, although you will need to click on the links to bring up the lyrics. I am also doing research on each song and era to add photos and background, but I will include that along with version 4 at some later point depending on what luck I have finding more covers and the missing five songs. Despairing of the capability of the police and the courts to protect them, many have turned to an industry of private security offering protection for a price. Are the sometimes brutal methods of these private police really a solution or just another part of the problem? The first stop for Louis is a meeting with William Mayangoni, the local co-ordinator for a security firm known as Mapogo. Based on the outskirts of Diepsloot, one of the squatter camps that ring Johannesburg, William investigates thefts for his mainly white clients. When he catches a suspect, he gives them 'medicine': the alleged offender is beaten with a leather whip known as a sjambok. Although his clients seem to support what they see as 'an African solution to an African problem', William's methods alienate the people of Diepsloot. Finally, their patience snaps dramatically, and William has to call out the real police in order to protect himself from the vicious threat of the mob. In the centre of Johannesburg, a security company called Bad Boyz work in an area called Hillbrow, notorious for its high crime rate. Louis meets company director Hendrik De Klerk who explains that much of their activity involves reclaiming and securing buildings that have taken over - or hijacked - by criminal gangs who illegally take rent from tenants. BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Tuesday, September 2, 2008 -- The GNU operating system is turning 25 this year, and the Free Software Foundation (FSF) has kicked off its month-long celebration of the anniversary by releasing "Happy Birthday to GNU," a short film featuring the English humorist, actor, novelist and filmmaker Stephen Fry. In the five-minute film, Fry compares the free software operating system to "good science" and contrasts it with the "kind of tyranny" imposed by the proprietary software produced by companies like Microsoft and Apple that it replaces. He encourages people to use free GNU/Linux distributions like gNewSense (http://gnewsense.org) and free software generally, for freedom's sake. "Stephen has generously donated his time to the cause of free software. His ability to communicate a technological and philosophical movement in terms of the basic principles of sharing and user freedom -- ideas that everyone can understand -- will introduce a new and broader audience to the benefits of free software," said Matt Lee, an FSF campaigns manager and writer/producer of the film.
