Man in the Sand (1999)

Category: Documentary
Description:
Man in the Sand is a 1999 music documentary that chronicles the collaboration between Billy Bragg and Wilco, which involved the musicians creating new music to accompany lyrics that were written decades earlier by folk singer Woody Guthrie. The project, which was organized by Woody's daughter Nora, spawned two albums: Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998, and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, released in 2000.

The film begins with Bragg in Guthrie's original hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma, and follows along as Bragg travels to other Guthrie haunts in Texas, California, and finally, New York. Much of the documentary is also spent at the recording sessions in Chicago (December 1997) and Dublin, Ireland (January 1998). Most of the tracks from both albums were recorded at these sessions.
Seeders: 2
Leeches: 1

PBS-How The Beatles Rocked The Kremlin (2009).WS-PDTV.XviD.Ekolb

Category: Documentary
Description:
How The Beatles Rocked The Kremlin (2009)

This is the unknown story of how the Beatles inspired a revolution that helped to destroy the communist system. Leslie Woodhead first met the Beatles in 1962 when he worked on a film in the Liverpool Cavern Club before the world had heard of the Fab Four. Twenty-five years later, when Woodhead began to make films in the Soviet Union, he became aware of how the Beatles legend had soaked into the lives of a generation of Soviet kids -- even though they were barred from playing "Back in the USSR."

Now he has been on a journey to meet the Soviet Beatles generation and to discover how the Fab Four changed their lives. Featuring a bizarre collection of Beatles tribute bands, the film tracks down the stories of how the Cold War was won with music as much as with nuclear missiles.

Spring Awakening (2006) CAM avi

Category: Misc
Description:

I pulled out Judith Levine's "Harmful to Minors". I had read it already but always wanted to
return to it.

This put me in mind of a Levine review of a play some time back. I looked up the
review of Spring Awakening at The Nation. Spring Awakening is now a musical. I was
incredulous.

The original play was written in 1891 and has scandalized generation after generation, is
rarely produced and is always criticized as being not appropriate for minors-- when it's about
minors-- 14 year olds to be specific.

The play copy is very hard to find-- about 2 in the state library system.
As I was reading about the play I tjhought of the exceptional work the high schools are doing
over the past couple years. I wonder if there's a prospect for a student production?

Now in 2009 I have reposted the CAM from an Off Broadway production in 2006. A CAM of a live
stage set piece will, of its nature, be static. Try to envision yourself in the audience for the
single perspective. That helps.

Since torrents of movies and documentaries and audio content are now common, I see the next
big breakthrough to come in this type of CAM: those who would share live theater for analysis of
more productions especially for young actors. Where I live a production of Urinetown came to
the local performing arts center. A short time later when the play was released for performance,
a high school did the play here.

Like some of my other torrents such as Marat Sade and Peter Watkins' "La Commune" and The
Living Theater "Signals Through The Flames" I see live theater as a way to raise awareness of
the subjects we explore on OBT.

British American Tobacco rock concert at Blantyre, Malawi defies cigarette promo laws

In this hard hitting investigation businessman Duncan Bannatyne travels to Malawi, Mauritius and Nigeria and discovers tactics BAT are using which circumvent bans on advertising and raise the profile of cigarettes in countries where doctors are already predicting a potential epidemic of smoking- related diseases.

This comes after previous investigations raised concerns at the marketing techniques used by the company - which led BAT to say that they're not targeting youth.

BAT's own marketing code acknowledges that single cigarettes are particularly attractive to youth (who may not be able to afford a whole packet of cigarettes) and BAT claim that they do not encourage the sale of single sticks because it encourages youth access.

Yet in Mauritius, Bannatyne discovers special pots which BAT have distributed to shops to make it easier for them to sell single cigarettes. In Malawi and Nigeria he discovers posters that BAT have produced depicting single cigarettes and showing the price of a single cigarette.

He also meets children as young as 11 who are buying the single cigarettes and already developing a nicotine habit With secretly shot footage, the programme shows the pungwe or music events organised by BAT in Malawi which show cigarettes as sexy, exciting and fun. The concert features some of Malawi's most popular bands wearing branded T shirts,

In an interview with Chris Proctor, Head of Research and Regulation at BAT, Bannatyne challenges him on the issue of single cigarettes and other tactics he believes are breaching their marketing code

HBO - Dope Sick Love (2005)

Category: Documentary
Description:

HBO - Dope Sick Love (2005)

The America Undercover documentary exclusively on HBO
Tracey getting her needle ready to shoot up Where are the characters now?
They say love conquers all, but can love survive on the streets of New York City? For drug-addicted couples like Matt and Tracy, and Sebastian and Michelle, the dream of romance must endure the reality of a desperate unending cycle of fixes, withdrawals, brawls and hustles.

The America Undercover documentary DOPE SICK LOVE tells the stories of these two couples. Cinematographers, Brent and Craig Renaud spent 18 months on the streets to capture the raw reality in a frightening and compelling you-are-there style. The special is executive produced by 11-time Emmy® winner Jon Alpert (HBO’s “High on Crack Street: Lost Lives of Lowell”).

Michelle and Sebastian after an intense fight on the subway “Dope Sick“ is the street term for the excruciating illness and pain that occur when an addict can’t get a fix. According to the government website, there are one million heroin addicts and eight million people who have used crack in the U.S.

Presented without music, effects, or narration, DOPE SICK LOVE is pure cinema verité, shot on the streets of lower Manhattan over a period of 18 months. It is stark and unrelenting. The camera follows the two couples into the corridors of apartment buildings where they shoot up; into the homes of the johns who pay for their services; and back out onto the streets as they chase their next fix.

“We didn’t want to make just another drug film,” says Craig Renaud. “Most films about drug addicts don’t adequately portray the horrors of addiction. Drug addiction controls every aspect of a user’s life. It reduces family, work, hobbies and friendships to distant memories. In order to capture this dark reality, we had to ‘embed’ ourselves into this life. When you watch DOPE SICK LOVE you won’t just see what its like to live this kind of life, you will feel it.”

Matt kisses a client goodbye The documentary takes place in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of beautiful, historic brownstone houses and tree-lined streets. It’s also the place where Matt and Tracy score their drugs, and break into buildings to shoot heroin and smoke crack. Tracey was a 17-year-old in private school when she started experimenting with drugs. Matt, who has been on the streets since he was 14, prostitutes himself to gay men to support his habit. His mother would like to help him fight his drug addiction, but has lost hope, observing, “Matt was a good kid and then he grew up. I can’t deal with his lifestyle any longer.” Tracey’s long-suffering father won’t give up on his daughter. The weekly checks he sends her go entirely to support the couples’ drug habits. To get them off the streets, Tracey’s father finally decides that he has no choice but to rent an apartment for them in Brooklyn. This is a happy ending of sorts, but one that feels fragile, because Tracy and Matt continue to do drugs.

Without the financial support of family, Sebastian and Michelle have a tougher time. Sebastian engages in gay prostitution when the couple is desperate for money, but he doesn’t want his girl Michelle engaging in sex for money. Michelle is a master of the scam, luring prospective sex clients into compromising situations. Then, posing as a cop, she pulls out a fake badge and extorts cash from the johns in exchange for their “freedom.”
Sebastian and Michelle’s hand-to-mouth existence strains their relationship. As the high wears off they get into violent street fights. Eventually, the desire for drugs is stronger than their love for each other. They part ways and end up on the streets -- alone.

“Let this film be a warning to anyone who thinks that drugs will bring anything but degradation and desperation,” says Brent Renaud. “Even though DOPE SICK LOVE deals with two romances, nothing is romanticized in this documentary. There is nothing constructive about crack. There is nothing heroic about heroin. We wanted to bring the viewer close enough to the life of a drug addict to show the inevitable result.”

John Pilger - Globalisation: The New Rulers of the World (2002)

Category: Documentary
Description:

John Pilger - Globalisation: The New Rulers of the World (2002)

The myths of globalisation have been incorporated into much of our everyday language. "Thinking globally" and "the global economy" are part of a jargon that assumes we are all part of one big global village, where national borders and national identities no longer matter. But what is globalisation? And where is this global village?

In some respects you are already living in it. The clothes in your local store were probably stitched together in the factories of Asia. Much of the food in your local supermarket will have been grown in Africa. It's easier than ever to buy music from Mali, read novels from Colombia and watch films from Iran. The world is shrinking.

In 2001, John Pilger made 'The New Rulers of the World', a film exploring the impact of globalisation. It took Indonesia as the prime example, a country that the World Bank described as a 'model pupil' until its 'globalised' economy collapsed in 1998.

Globalisation has not only made the world smaller. It has also made it interdependent. An investment decision made in London can spell unemployment for thousands in Indonesia, while a business decision taken in Tokyo can create thousands of new jobs for workers in north-east England.

This might seem a very natural development if you live in a country like Britain, with its long international history as a trading nation and imperial power. Bringing the world closer together may throw up new opportunities for cultural and economic interaction, but it also exposes us to the negative aspects of life on a shrinking planet, whether it be the threat of global warming, the international traffic in women for sexual exploitation or the spread of AIDS throughout Africa and Asia.

More and more people across the world are acknowledging the threats posed by globalisation. This has given rise to the Global Justice Movement, with its regular social forums, which are a new, dynamic form of true internationalism.

The protestors come from many different countries and many different backgrounds, but they are united by one aim: to ensure that globalisation works in the interests of all the world's people, not just a fortunate few.
Seeders: 13
Leeches: 15

*"WE - ARUNDHATI ROY" is a fast-paced 64 minute documentary that covers the world politics of power, war, corporations, deception and exploitation.
*It visualizes the words of Arundhati Roy, specifically her famous 'Come September' speech, where she spoke on such things as the war on terror, corporate globalization, justice and the growing civil unrest.
*Witty, moving, alarming and quite a lesson in modern history.
*We is almost in the style of a music video, featuring the contemporary music of Lush, Curve, Love & Rockets, Boards of Canada, Nine Inch Nails, Dead Can Dance, Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Totoise, Telepop, Placebo and Faithless. The music serves as wonderful background for the words of Ms. Roy and images of humanity in the world we live all in today.
*We is a completely free documentary, created (and released) anonymously on the internet. ;; Smaller, 101MB version available from the official site: http://www.weroy.org/watch.shtml
Also available is an iTunes/iPod version in MP4 format. It's about 260mb.
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 1
