This documentary profiles Zen Master Edward Espe Brown and shows the art of Zen and cooking. Espe Brown first became interested in baking as an 11-year kid when he realized the startling difference between mass-produced supermarket bread and the fresh homemade stuff. When he asked his mother to teach him how to bake, however, she said "No, yeast makes me nervous."

Brown became the head cook at the Tassajara Mountain Centre in California when he was in his early 20s, and has been practicing the art of Zen Buddhism and cooking for more than 40 years. As a chef, he is typically short-tempered and exacting, but as a Buddhist master he is exactly the opposite. Director Dörrie (Men, Naked) sets her camera on Espe Brown as he travels from the Scheibbs Buddhist Centre in Austria to Tassajara, offering cooking seminars based upon the principles established 800 years ago by Master Eihei Dogen Zenji, the founder of the Japanese Soto-Zen school. Master Dogen wrote about the necessity of treating food as if it was as valuable as your eyesight. From washing rice, to preparing vegetables, every action could be a path to Zen. Or as the master said, "When you're washing the rice, wash the rice." A charming taskmaster who regularly punctures his holiness with moments of self-deprecation and humour, Espe Brown's observations on modern culture, cooking and human foibles are often as acerbic and hilarious as they are profound. --Brett-Lloyd

Lenny Bruce - Without Tears (F. Baker, 1972)[+Extras]-CiNeMANiAC

Category: Documentary
Description:
Lenny Bruce - Without Tears (F. Baker, 1972)[+Extras]-CiNeMANiAC

"There are no dirty words, only dirty minds" - Bruce

Lenny Bruce was and is the most important comedian to have ever lived- and did more to protect free speech in America than perhaps anyone else in the country's history. After his death by drug overdose in 1966 there was a feeling that there was a need to define the martyred comedian's legacy. This task was carried out by filmmaker and close friend of Lenny, Fred Baker. The film, "a skillfully researched documentary about the late pop hero" (la times), was produced, directed, researched and written by Fred Baker and his wife Barbara, whom together accumulated the largest collection of audio and video footage of not only Bruce's performances in film, stage and tv, but also audio recordings photos, footage of his criminal prosecutions and dealings with the media, as well as a number of interviews with Bruce and others concerning discussing his life and work. Not only was Baker in the best position to define Bruce's Legacy because he was his biggest fan, but also because he was his close friend- during his rise to fame and fortune, his persecution, and the downfall which eventually led to his dive into addiction and death. This film is testament which greatly honours everything Bruce achieved, both in life, and after his death.

Bruce was a brilliant entertainer, whom from a very young age was doing comedy. His mother introduced him to the world of burlesque (also at a very young age!) which would shape Bruce's mindset- representing all that was taboo, vulgar....and true. After travelling the burlesque circuit as a comedian, Bruce met a woman who would soon become his wife. Together they would travel the US and Canada as a duo, until Bruce was recognized and shortly after became one of the most reknown comedians in the country (making over 350, 000 a year at one point). When he and his wife seperated after the birth of their child- Kitty- Bruce met with depression and drugs....but this made him lose all inhibitions and he started to become more of a social satirist than merely just another mediocare comedian. Bruce would hold nothing back, lashing out at the government, police and especially the Catholic Church- stepping on some powerful toes in the process. Not only was he a brilliant performer, but what he was revealing made you laugh...think...and maybe even act, which is what these instutions of power feared most. The power you wield when you can make someone laugh is unsurpassed.

"If you can't say FUCK, you can't say FUCK THE GOVERNMENT!" - Bruce

Soon after Bruce would be arrested for obscenity. Not once, but over and over, everywhere he played. He was always in court, noone would risk having Bruce play at their club for fear of reprecussions, and thus Bruce was in ruins. All his money was now tied up in legal costs and was put in a position where he was unable to work without being thrown in jail and charged even more so. Despite everything Bruce refused to roll over. His shows became more rants than comedy acts. He would read peoples reviews of his shows, the charges brought against him, and the laws of the state and constitution- he was no longer a comedian but a revolutionary, fighting for hjis right to free speech and liberty to make a living. Sadly, Bruce would not live through the ordeal...his battle with drug addiction and depression took his life in 1966- the police letting reporters in 2 at a time to photograph Bruce lying dead and naked on his bathroom floor. But in death Bruce would achieve just as much as he did in life...his battle went to the Supreme Court where his name was exonerated (though charges never dropped)- never again would a comedian, or anyone else, be charged with obscenity for what they said in the US.

Baker himself succeeds in portraying Bruce's mentality in this film- he holds nothing back, showing Bruce at his highest and lowest. He decided to include the scenes of Brue's death as that is what he would have wanted......the truth to be heard.
RIP Lenny....you are, and always will be, the man!

A beautiful alien is sent from the planet Epsilon to pass judgment on the shameful way in which humans have mishandled their planet. Set in a near future in which humanity has made great strides in cleaning up the Earth, it begins as a grandmother tells her granddaughters a story from the past. Her tale begins in the desert outback during the dark times when people were actively ruining their planet. The naked alien is placed upon the desert where she eventually meets a surveyor who quickly gives her some clothing. As the two travel across the land, the alien constantly admonishes him for his race's carelessness and greed. She informs him that other intelligent life forms consider humans hopeless failures. Using her ability to travel instantly to any of Earth's locales, she takes the bewildered surveyor on a whirlwind tour to prove her point. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The award winning documentary, Mardi Gras: Made in China, swiftly follows the path of Mardi Gras beads from the naked streets of New Orleans during Carnival, where revelers party 24/7, to the disciplined factories in Fuzhou, China, where teenage laborers live and thread beads 24/7. Told with humor and curiosity, Mardi Gras: Made in China provides a global connection by introducing workers and revelers to each other through a disposable commodity: Mardi Gras beads.

Filmmaker Statement:

In 2002, David Redmon decided to make Mardi Gras: Made in China (61 minutes) after reading articles about China’s rapid transformation into a capitalist, free market economy. Redmon wanted to follow one object from China to the United States in order to visually personalize globalization and illustrate how the commodity chain is connected to different people along the alienated and seemingly disconnected route. Out of curiosity and seduction, Redmon chose Mardi Gras beads as the object to analyze "from the factory to the festival."

Redmon followed his bead-trail of curiosity to the rural region of Fuzhou, China where the bead factory is located in a tax-free Special Economic Zone. After staying with the workers and documenting their everyday life inside a factory compound for two months, government officials in China requested that Redmon immediately leave the factory. Redmon left China and continued his bead-journey by following the bead trail to New Orleans during Carnival. Redmon’s purpose was to invite others to be part of a constructive debate about globalization by showing how the beads are transported, consumed, disposed, and recycled during their global journey.

Unforgotten - 25 Years After Willowbrook

Category: Documentary
Description:
It was a nightmare that shocked not only New York, but all of America. The public outcry about the Willowbrook School (on Staten Island) for people with developmental disabilities resulted from Geraldo Rivera\'s award-winning series on WABC-TV in 1972. Viewers were stunned by coverage of residents with mental retardation and developmental disabilities sprawled naked on feces covered floors, being forced to eat their meals in two to three minutes, living and breathing filth. Willowbrook\'s idea of a shower was to gather 60 residents in a tiled room and hose them down. The public\'s outrage was so intense, that by 1975, a Federal Court ordered that institutional care be phased out and replaced with community based settings. The mentally retarded would no longer be shuffled off into \"lunatic asylums.\" Instead, they would be given every opportunity to lead as constructive a life as possible.
Seeders: 1
Leeches: 2

Dalton Trumbo (09.12.1905 – 10.11.1976).

American screenwriter and novelist, blacklisted as one of the Hollywood Ten, a group of film professionals who testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1947 during the committee's investigation of Communist influences in the motion picture industry.

Screenwriter of "Spartacus" (amongst others)and author of "Johnny Got His Gun", possibly the most powerful anti-war novel ever written, written after the first world war and banned upon it's release in fear of the effect it would have on the nation.

This documentary follows the life, writing and most importantly the blacklisting of the author as communist and un-american.

With a castlist to make Hollywood's casting assistants envious.

----------------------------
----------------------------

"He was Hollywood's greatest screenwriter. His words still
resonate today. He defied a committee, he defied the system
They took his honor. They took his freedom. So Dalton
Trumbo went to war. But the ending could only be written
by him."

For those who have not yet read "Johnny Got His Gun" I strongly recommend stopping whatever you may be doing, going out and getting hold of a copy, reading it cover to cover, and then reading it again.

Son - "What is democracy?"
Father - "Well I was never very clear on it myself.
Like every other kind of government, it's got something to do with
young men killing each other, I believe."
Son - "Why don't old men kill each other?"
Father - "Well the old men are needed to keep the home fires burning."
Son - "Couldn't the young men do that just as well?"
Father - "Young men don't have homes, that's why they must go out and kill
each other"
Son - "When it comes my turn, will you want me to go?"
Father - "For democracy, any man would give up his only begotten son."

----------------------------

"They knew that if all the little people all the little guys saw the future they would begin to ask questions. They would ask questions and they would find answers and they would say to the guys who wanted them to fight, they would say "You lying, thieving sons of bitches. We won't fight. We won't be dead. We will live. We are the world. We are the future. And we won't let you butcher us no matter what you say, no matter what speeches you make, no matter what slogans you write. Remember it well, we are the world, we, we, we are what makes it go round, we make bread and cloth and guns, we are the hub of the wheel and the spokes and the wheel itself, and without us you would be hungry naked worms and we will not die. It will not be us who die. It will be you. It will be you. You who urge us on to battle, you who incite us against ourselves, you who would have one cobbler kill another cobbler, you who would have one man who works kill another man who works, you who would have one human being, who wants only to live, kill another human being who wants only to live. If you tell us to make the world safe for democracy, we will take you seriously and by god and by christ we will make it so. Make no mistake of it we will live, we will be alive and we will walk, and talk and eat and sing and feel and love, and we will bear our children in tranquility in security in decency in peace."

Horizon takes a group of volunteers and subjects them to a series of psychological and physical tests to challenge attitudes to the naked human form. The questions raised strike at the heart of human physical and social evolution.

Human beings are the only creatures that can be 'naked' - but why, how and when did people lose their fur? That question takes Horizon around the world to meet scientists from Africa to Florida, and they are finding answers in unexpected places: the chest hair of Finnish students, the genetic history of lice, and the sweat of an unusual monkey.

It turns out that something everyone takes for granted may hold the key to the success of the entire human species.

Standard Operating Procedure (2008)

Information
Standard Operating Procedure is an examination of the unintended consequences of the Iraqi war with a focus on events at Abu Ghraib prison which began to appear in global media in 2004. The prison quickly became notorious for the shocking photos of the abuse and torture of terror suspects by military men and women. Ultimately, it is the story of soldiers who believed they were defending democracy but found themselves plunged into an unimagined nightmare.

You’ve seen the photographs: the naked prisoners, the pyramid of degraded captives, and the infamous thumbs-up grin of the young female corporal standing guard over them all. Now, come inside and see the true story of the men and women who crossed the thin line between interrogation and torture. Errol Morris’s award-winning documentary takes you behind the bars of the 21st century’s most infamous prison, and the acts that forced a president to apologize to the world.

Allegedly encouraged by interrogators to increase the pressure on the detainees to better facilitate the extraction of military intelligence, members of the 372nd Military Police Company who were responsible for guarding the detainees crossed the line between SOP and criminal misconduct. Detainees were subjected to physical abuse (e.g., punching and dog bites) and sexual humiliation (e.g., forced masturbation and forced homoerotic postures) not authorized by the SOP. Though the soldiers knew enough to hide their misconduct from outsiders, especially the Red Cross, they graphically documented it in personal photos and videos. Widely circulated throughout the 372nd, the images eventually leaked out to the press and were the evidentiary basis for the subsequent courts-martial.

Seven enlisted soldiers from the 372nd had been convicted of violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice by the time Morris started making Standard Operating Procedure. The stiffest sentences were given to Staff Sergeant Ivan Frederick and Corporal Charles Granger who were given eight- and ten-year prison terms respectively. Though the Army denied Morris the opportunity to interview Frederick and Granger (who were still incarcerated during filming), he did secure the cooperation of the other five: Sergeant Javel Davis; Specialists Megan Ambuhl Granger, Sabrina Harman, and Jeremy Sivits; and Private First Class Lynndie England.

Director Morris describes Standard Operating Procedure as an investigation to discover what actually happened “outside the frame” of the infamous Abu Ghraib photographs. His conclusion was that “the Abu Ghraib photos serve as both an expose and a coverup."
Seeders: 134
Leeches: 676

The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On-Yuki Yukite shingun (1987)

Category: Documentary
Description:
This documentary was five years in the making, and revolves around 62-year-old Okuzaki Kenzo, a survivor of the battlefields of New Guinea in World War II who gained notoriety by slingshooting steel pinballs at Emperor Showa to protest against what he considered to be the ruler's war crimes. Setting out to conduct interviews with survivors and relatives, he finds the truth of the past to be elusive, achieving a breakthrough only when he confronts ex-Sergeant Yamada, who grudgingly admits the occurrence and instructional source of certain atrocities.
