In Defense of Academic Freedom (University of Chicago, 2007-10-12)

Category: Talks, Debates, Interviews
Description:
Hey all,

This is a conference that was held in support of Norman Finkelstein when he was denied tenure at De Paul university (Chicago) in early 2007 for his opinions (in private, not in teaching, nota bene) about the Israel-Palestine conflict. It features nine speakers (see below for list) and a question and answer period.

This conference is a unique gathering of people with different, sometimes opposing opinions. On one hand, among the nine academics there are "hard-leftists like Noam Chomsky" (quoting Alan Dershowitz), while on the other hand some of the participants are in favour of Israel's current policies and have publicly criticized Finkelstein for his "anti-semitic" views. All of which only makes it an even more amazing display of academic solidarity.

Presentations of the speakers are found here:
http://www.academicfreedomchicago.org/
(The files can all be found here if you prefer to view them streaming.)

List of speakers:
01 - Tariq Ali, Editor of the New Left Review and Verso Books
02 - Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor & Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus), MIT
03 - Dr. Akeel Bilgrami, Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy and Director of The Heyman Center, Columbia
04 -Tony Judt, University Professor and Director of the Remarque Institute, New York University
05 - John Mearsheimer, R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science, University of Chicago
(06 - Question and Answer period)
07 - Evan Lorendo, Academic Freedom Committee, DePaul University
08 - Mehrene Larudee, International Studies Program, DePaul University
09 - Neve Gordon, Professor, Department of Politics and Government, Ben-Gurion University
10 - Norman Finkelstein, author and historian

White Phosphorous and Dense Inert Metal Explosives: Is Israel Using Banned and Experimental Munitions in Gaza?
Israel is coming under increasing criticism for its possible use of banned and experimental munitions. Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of illegally firing white phosphorous, which causes horrific burns if it comes in contact with the skin, over crowded refugee camps in Gaza. Medics and human rights groups are also reporting that they are seeing injuries distinctive of another controversial weapon, Dense Inert Metal Explosive, known as DIME, that was designed by the US Air Force in 2006. Those struck by the weapon who survive suffer severe mutilations and internal injuries. We go to the Gaza border to speak with Marc Garlasco of Human Rights Watch and to Norway to speak with Dr. Mads Gilbert, who just returned from the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. He says Gaza is “truly a scene from Dante’s Inferno.” [includes rush transcript]

Quotes from great leaders:

Arik Sharon
“I vow that if I was just an Israeli civilian and I met a Palestinian I would burn him and I would make him suffer before killing him.”

“Everybody has to move; run and grab as many hilltops as they can to enlarge the settlements, because everything we take now will stay ours. Everything we don't grab will go to them.” 1998

Mofaz:

“We have to make every effort to direct resources to strengthen the settlement blocs, ... We must do everything possible to strengthen the residents' feeling of security.”

“The situation in Judea and Samaria will be complex and difficult after the disengagement. The region will become our main theater of operations for fighting terror.”

“The response needs to be crushing.”

“will be hit again and again until they understand there are new rules to the game.”

Netanyahu:

“Sharon gave and gave and gave, the Palestinians got and got and got, and my question is, what did we get? Nothing and nothing and nothing,”

Barak:

“united and eternal capital of Israel.”

Tzipi Livni:

“Some say let's not give them too much power. But we need power to do the things we believe in and change Israeli politics. In coalition talks, we don't want to have to compromise on what we believe in.”

What is this "things" that Tzipi Livni believes in?

Peace to Palestinians and Israeli's alike,

General Moshe Dayan who in his later days knew that victory could only be achieved through another path said the following......

Former Amb. Martin Indyk vs. Author Norman Finkelstein: A Debate on Israel's Assault on Gaza and the US Role in the Conflict
The Israeli assault on Gaza is entering its thirteenth day. Some 700 Palestinians have been killed, with many thousands more wounded, and a humanitarian crisis is mounting. Ten Israelis have died, four by “friendly fire.” A ceasefire has not been reached, and the offensive continues. We host a debate between Martin Indyk, the former US ambassador to Israel and Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs during the Clinton administration, director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution and author of, Innocent Abroad: An Intimate Account of American Peace Diplomacy in the Middle East, and Norman Finkelstein, author of several books, including The Holocaust Industry, Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict and Beyond Chutzpah. Battle Within SEIU Comes to a Head with Executive Board Vote on Future of One of its Largest Locals
We look at the latest on a major battle within one of the country’s largest labor unions, the Service Employees International Union. SEIU’s executive board is meeting today to decide whether to dismantle one of its largest locals, California’s 150,000-member United Healthcare Workers West, by merging all or part of it into a new California affiliate. Critics of the proposal say SEIU president Andy Stern is trying to push ahead with the move despite overwhelming opposition from local members. [includes rush transcript]

From Wikipedia:
The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering is a book published in 2000 by Norman G. Finkelstein, which argues that the American Jewish establishment exploits the memory of the Nazi Holocaust for financial and political gain, as well as to further the interests of Israel.[1] According to Finkelstein, this "Holocaust industry" has corrupted Jewish culture, as well as the authentic memory of the Holocaust. Finkelstein's parents were both Holocaust survivors who had been inmates of concentration camps.[2]

The book was a bestseller in Europe, the Middle East and the Americas, and has been translated into 16 languages.

THE HOLOCAUST INDUSTRY: REFLECTIONS ON THE EXPLOITATION OF JEWISH SUFFERING (Second Edition)

In 2007, Raul Hilberg, most distinguished historian on the Nazi holocaust and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, said:

"...Finkelstein, when he published this book, was alone. It takes an enormous amount of academic courage to speak the truth when no one else is out there to support him. And so, I think that given this acuity of vision and analytical power, demonstrating that the Swiss banks did not owe the money, that even though survivors were beneficiaries of the funds that were distributed, they came, when all is said and done, from places that were not obligated to pay that money. That takes a great amount of courage in and of itself. So I would say that his place in the whole history of writing history is assured, and that those who in the end are proven right triumph, and he will be among those who will have triumphed, albeit, it so seems, at great cost."

Hilberg comments on the first edition of The Holocaust Industry:

"When I read Finkelstein's book, The Holocaust Industry , at the time of its appearance, I was in the middle of my own investigations of these matters, and I came to the conclusion that he was on the right track. I refer now to the part of the book that deals with the claims against the Swiss banks, and the other claims pertaining to forced labor. I would now say in retrospect that he was actually conservative, moderate and that his conclusions are trustworthy. He is a well-trained political scientist, has the ability to do the research, did it carefully, and has come up with the right results. I am by no means the only one who, in the coming months or years, will totally agree with Finkelstein's breakthrough."
