Unreported World visits Guatemala where reporter Seyi Rhodes's film becomes a snapshot of a society sliding into violent chaos. One hundred and four bus drivers have been shot this year in Guatemala. They're an easy target for organized crime gangs who extort up to a million dollars a year from the bus companies. Even if the drivers pay the gangs' demands, they're often shot anyway. Headquarters of the extortion rackets? The country's El Boqueron prison

Bus drivers in Guatemala City are being murdered at a rate of one every other day as part of a campaign of extortion that threatens to bring the city to its knees. Extortion is the main source of income for Guatemala's criminal gangs, earning them millions of dollars a year, and the drivers are killed to instil fear as the gangs maintain their grip on the city.

            ....

The extortion of buses began nine years ago. The gangs send mobile phones to the bus drivers or company owners, which they then call, demanding payment. Over the years, these gangs have evolved into highly organized criminal networks, which infiltrate the bus companies in order to protect their interests.

            .....

The crew arrive at the scene of another bus shooting, where the driver's wife passes out when she realizes what has happened. The driver's colleagues are so angry they block Calle Martí, one of the main routes out of Guatemala City, in protest. The result is total chaos.

Extortion is so lucrative for the gangs they don't stop at the bus companies. Practically any business in Guatemala City is a target. There's nothing the government can do to end this culture of violence that has become part of everyday life in Guatemala City. Extortion is expected and murder accepted.

Gypsy Child Thieves.
Across Europe children are being forced onto the streets to beg and steal. They come from one of the poorest communities in Europe - the Romanian Gypsies. For centuries Gypsies have lived on the margins of society and faced brutal discrimination. Many have resorted to stealing and begging to survive.

But in the last 20 years, organized crime has taken over. And since 2007, when Romania joined the EU, Gypsy children have been trafficked and exploited on a much larger scale. In an attempt to understand what is happening to these children Romanian film-maker Liviu Tipurita embarks on a journey through Europe which takes him inside the closed world of the Gypsy community, and talks to the authorities and institutions meant to be dealing with this disturbing phenomenon....

In Italy, where Gypsies face a shocking tide of racism, a major police investigation found enslaved children locked in a shack like animals. Two years on, Tipurita's investigation finds out that the elaborate police operation has not saved them from a life of crime.

In an attempt to trace the roots of the problem and the origins of this exploitation within the Gypsy community, Tipurita travels to his native Romania, home to the largest Gypsy population in the world.

He meets up with one of the most powerful leaders of the Gypsy underworld, for whom stealing is a profession that has been passed from generation to generation, and who provides a special insight into the history of Gypsy crime.

This World asks whether these children are the victims of a culture of crime and a wider society that seems to have abandoned them. And raises a question - will anyone save them from the hands of their exploiters?

"An estimated half-million women are trafficked annually for the purpose of sexual slavery. The women are kidnapped — or lured by traffickers who prey on their dreams of employment abroad — then they are “exported” to Europe, the Middle East, the United States and elsewhere, where they are sold to pimps, drugged, terrorized, locked in brothels and raped repeatedly. In Eastern Europe, since the fall of communism, sex trafficking has become the fastest growing form of organized crime, with Moldova and Ukraine widely seen as the centers of the global trade in women and girls. FRONTLINE presents a unique hidden-camera look at this world of sexual slavery, talking with traffickers and their victims, and exposing the government indifference that allows the abuses to continue virtually unchecked. “Sex Slaves” also follows the remarkable journey of one man determined to find his trafficked wife by posing as a trafficker himself to buy back her freedom."

A new profile of the man who was director of the FBI for nearly 50 years. It would appear that the Mafia had some kind of hold over him. The American Mafia, it is asserted, had damaging evidence about Hoover's sex life and they knew about his homosexuality.

Hoover's attitude to organized crime underwent a sea change between the 1930s and 1940s. He turned a blind eye during the vital years of its growth allowing it to gain a firm grip on American society.

The documentary also looks at how Hoover changed the perception of law enforcement from drunken Irish cops to a modicum of middle class respectability, although he wasn't above taking a few perks himself.

His lifestyle was funded by the taxpayer to the extent that FBI funds were used to find out which animal had pooed on his lawn. (Turns out it was a raccoon!)

His love of gambling meant that he used Mafia connections to place undercover bets and fix the races.
Blindness to the Mafia's entrenchment into US society is attributed to blackmail...at which Hoover was the master himself. And of course there is the obligatory link with the Kennedys

Cocaine Cowboys

Category: Documentary
Description:
From wikipedia.com

Cocaine Cowboys is a documentary film directed by Billy Corben and produced by Alfred Spellman and Billy Corben through their Miami-based media studio rakontur. Jan Hammer composed and performed the film's original score. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2006, and distribution rights to the film in English speaking territories were licensed to Magnolia Pictures. The film opened in U.S. theaters with a limited release on October 27, 2006.

The film chronicles the development of the illegal drug trade in Miami during the 1970s and 1980s with interviews of both law enforcement and organized crime leaders, in addition to news footage from the era. The film reveals that in the 1960s and early 1970s, marijuana was the primary import drug into the region. During the 1970s, marijuana imports were replaced by the much more lucrative cocaine imports. Drug importers reveal several of the different methods used to import the drugs into Florida. The primary methods used to import the narcotics were by boat or by air. The drug importers also reveal the complexity of their methods of importation which include the purchase and financing of legitimate businesses to provide cover for illegal operations. Importers reveal that condominiums were purchased near particular ocean waterways to provide a monitoring post for Coast Guard and local police patrol boats. Importers reveal the use of high-tech radio monitoring equipment used to monitor the radio frequencies of Federal, State, and local authorities in order to warn incoming boats and airplanes.

The film reveals that much of the economic growth which took place in Miami during this time period was a benefit of the drug trade. As members of the drug trade made immense amounts of money, this money flowed in large amounts into legitimate businesses. As a result, drug money indirectly financed the construction of many of the modern high-rise buildings in southern Florida.

A sequel Cocaine Cowboys II: Hustlin' With The Godmother chronicling the life of Griselda Blanco will premiere at the CineVegas Film Festival June 20th, 2008 and will be released on DVD July 29,2008.
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 3

Along the way, the production team takes a rare, hidden-camera look at the various traffickers, pimps and middlemen who illegally buy and sell hundreds of thousands of women each year. Lured by traffickers who prey on their dreams of employment abroad, many of the women are then kidnapped and "exported" to Europe, the Middle East, the United States and elsewhere. During this process, they may be sold to pimps, locked in brothels, drugged, terrorized and raped repeatedly. In Eastern Europe, since the fall of communism, sex trafficking has become the fastest growing form of organized crime, with Moldova and Ukraine widely seen as major suppliers of women into the global sex trade.

An Act Of State - The Execution of MLK

Category: Documentary
Description:
Forget everything you think you know, Pepper insists. James Earl Ray did not pull the trigger. The journalist-turned-lawyer's previous title, Orders to Kill: The Truth Behind the Murder of Martin Luther King Jr., was more a prelude to this title than the final word. Twenty years after James Earl Ray was convicted, Pepper set out to clear him; in the process, he brought to light reams of evidence that were ignored in the original trial. The key to his case is Loyd Jowers, a bar owner who claims to have disposed of the murder weapon at the request of a local mob figure. Partially on the strength of the Orders to Kill material, Pepper won the support of King's wife and children, who brought Jowers and "unknown co-conspirators" to trial in a civil wrongful death suit in 1999.

Dozens of witnesses contributed to a forceful, detailed case that accused the FBI, the CIA, the U.S. military, the Memphis police, and local and national organized crime leaders. After only an hour of deliberation, the jury found for the King family. The accusers, led by Pepper, cried vindication and fully expected to be at the center of one of the biggest news stories of the century. But the trial and the verdict barely registered in the media. Appalled by the silence that followed, Pepper remained determined to bring the details of his exhaustive probe and subsequent civil case to the public, and the result is this exacting book, dense with evidence and analysis of the murder. Pepper sets the tone by recalling the state of civil unrest in this country during the late 1960s and why King's radical activism was such a threat to government and corporate leaders.

Simply put, Pepper claims those in power were scared to death of the mass mobilization King's Poor People's Campaign might have inspired. Pepper gradually introduces the vast cast of characters in a dizzying murder conspiracy that winds from a Memphis bar through the shadows of organized crime to the far reaches of national government. He carefully maps each player's place and role in the tangled web and doggedly tries to stick to a straightforward narrative. The number of unanswered questions complicates those efforts, but does not cloud the evidence that Ray was not the shooter. Pepper attempts nothing less than a rewrite of history, and a spurring of further investigation. While his moralizing epilogue on the deterioration of democracy is distracting, it is heartfelt, and honors Pepper's commitment to King's legacy.
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0
