Welcome to Sarajevo Directed by Micheal Winterbottom (1997)

Welcome to Sarajevo Directed by Micheal Winterbottom (1997)

Nothing that British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom made before Welcome to Sarajevo (including Butterfly Kiss and Jude) suggested the clarifying rage of this 1997 film, which is based on the experiences of British journalist Michael Nicholson while on assignment in Bosnia. Made emotionally numb by the savagery and insanity of Serbian aggression on Sarajevo and surrounding towns and countryside, reporter Michael Henderson (Stephen Dillane in a remarkable performance) awakens to the plight of one orphanage and particularly to that of a girl whom he promises to rescue. Henderson's efforts lead to a harrowing bus journey to (temporary) protection for some of the kids (others, quite shockingly, are carried off en route by Serb marauders), and then a second, even more dangerous good deed to finish what he started. The film's dimensions go well beyond that story line, however, as Winterbottom re-creates the gallows-humor culture of international correspondents in a blighted region, as well as the nightmare of the Sarajevo siege. Most savage of all, however, is the director's use of news clips in a pointed attack on the West's refusal to deal with the slaughter and outrages in Bosnia at their peak. The supporting cast might look like a bunch of famous names (Kerry Fox, Marisa Tomei) used decorously to attract attention to the film, but in fact everyone is very good, especially Woody Harrelson as an American journalist whose entrance in the story is one of the most memorable in recent history.
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0

On May 2, 2008, a Category 4 cyclone made landfall on Burma’s southern coast. Winds of 130 miles per hour raged all night, and storm surge drowned much of the Irrawaddy Delta in over 12 feet of water. Whole villages vanished, at least 130,000 people died, and two million were left homeless, making Cyclone Nargis the worst natural disaster in Burma’s history. Among the survivors were thousands of children orphaned or separated from their parents.

Eyes of the Storm tells the struggles of several orphaned children left to fend for themselves and rebuild their shattered lives in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. Among others we meet 10-year-old Ye Pyint who is now surrogate father to his younger brother and sister; they live in a makeshift hut in what remains of their village. We follow Min, the 16-year-old who is the sole survivor from his family and is now trying to live as a monk in a Buddhist monastery miles away from his devastated home.

Through the eyes of the Burmese filmmaking team who shot undercover for over 10 months in defiance of the ruling junta’s media blackout, WIDE ANGLE provides a rare window into one of the world’s most secretive countries. The hour-long documentary also features American and British journalists who have reported from Burma and speak of its history and the hopes and fears for its future.

So looking at imdb, im absolutely flabergasted by the reviews this film received. As far as i'm concerned this is ONE OF THE TOP 5 FILMS SCREENED AT TIFF 2008. This is one of the the most eerie, spooky and disturbing films i've seen in a long time. I fucking loved it, but then again i consider myself more cinematically knowledgable than most. This is an ART FILM, and lacking a mainstream hollywood style storyline is why i think it has received such poor reviews on imdb...by people that don't know anything about what good cinema is.

The film follows Jeanne (Emmanuelle Beart) and her husband Paul (Rufus Sewell), a wealthy couple living in Thailand who have lost their young son Joshua in a Tsunami that had hit the island. When one of their friends, Kim, shows a video of orphaned children living in the jungles of Burma, with hopes of securing funds to send them humanitarian aid, Jeanne spots a boy wearing a Manchester United sweater and swears that it is her son. This throws her into a deeper fragile state of mind and she becomes hell bent on finding a way into Burma to seek out her lost child. Kim tells them of a man named Thaksin Gao that smuggles people in and out of Burma for a heafty price. At first they cannot find him, but trust a young thai man that says he can get them into the isolated country. Eventually they are led to Thaksin Gao who takes them deep into the jungles along the coast of Burma, to small villages where currency is small children. The first village they get to tries to pawn off a small Burmese boy as their son, but Paul wasn't falling for it. As they get deeper and deeper into the jungles of Burma, both members of the couple delve into even more fragile states of mind, bordering on mental breakdowns (in fact i think you could say that both do have mental breakdowns). What follows is not only unpredictable, but absolutely terrifying. This is one the most eerie, spooky and disturbing films i have seen in a long time, probably THE MOST SPOOKY FILM OF 2008. ( i highly reccomend NOT reading synopses of this film, because on imdb and even on the back of the dvd it contains spoilers, ive left these out as i feel it will make the film much more enjoyable!)

Beart, Sewell and the Thai actor playing Thaksin Gao do an absolutely incredible job, the two leading actors' portrayal of a couple in severely fragile mental states of mind is incredible, TOP NOTCH ACTING. This comes second only to the ABSOLUTELY STUNNING AND EERIE JUNGLE CINEMATOGRAPHY of which the film consists. This when combined with the utter unpredictability ;; of the plot makes for one helluva film. I loved it, and highly reccomend it. One of the top 5 films screened at TIFF in my opinion!!! Hope you guys like it as much as i did!

NORTH KOREA DOCUMENTARY PACK

Category: Documentary
Description:
Film list:

1. Friends of Kim

North Korea is the country many love to hate. Declared as a nation on the axis of evil by George W. Bush but embraced by an international delegation of friends: the Korean Friendship Association. They set out for a march through North Korea. Its aim: to show solidarity with the regime and the North Korean people. The authorities even allowed some US citizens in and an American journalist from ABC.

This 'International March for Korea's Peace and Reunification' is organised by the KFA, the Korean Friendship Association; a worldwide group of supporters of North Korea. Its leader is a 29 year old Spanish citizen, Alejandro Cao de Benos de Les y Perez. Originating from an aristocratic family he heads an organization with mainly young members who are fed up with the consumerism of the Western world.

In 12 days the 22 participants of the march travel through a country full of monuments, propaganda and poverty. Friends of Kim is a film about idealism, trust and crime. What begins as a magical mystery tour ends in a road to claustrophobia.

2. Holidays in the Axis of Evil

The Bush regime claims that North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya and Cuba are part of an "axis of evil". In a remarkable two-part travelogue, reporter Ben Anderson, armed with a hidden camera and a tourist map, visits all six rogue states and tries to find the reality of life in some of the most repressive regimes in the world. He spoke to us about this unusual vacation.

3. North Korea: A Day in the Life

A day in the life of an ordinary familyà in North Korea, land of the beloved leader Kim Jong-il. Filmmaker Pieter Fleury gives us a glimpse into the world of Hong Sun Hui, a female textile worker. At the factory, everything is highly controlled and all the workersÆ actions and results are meticulously entered in notebooks. Like puppets, the workers impassively carry out their tasks and finish their days singing hymns to the glory of Kim Jong-il.

In her kindergarten class, HongÆs daughter learns that ôflowers need the sun and she needs the love of the Great Leader to grow.ö When the family gathers at home in the evening, the propaganda continues to flow through the television. Unexpectedly, relief from the Orwellian control and clockwork regularity comes from the English classes that HongÆs brother is taking: they provide a moment of humour and open-mindedness.

The mechanisms of this perfect system of indoctrination and oppression are depicted through coldly precise images. The resulting film is a terrifying vision of a totalitarian state that recalls MaoÆs China, on which it was largely based. Absurd, grotesque, but sadly true.

4. The Real Dr. Evil

North Koreans call him "dear leader." President Bush calls him part of an "axis of evil." Kidnapper, terrorist, and likely nuclear tyrant also apply. This program uses extensive newsreel footage, archival materials, and exclusive interviews to create a biographical and psychological profile of Kim Jong Il in order to understand what motivates his sometimes bizarre and often tragic deeds. Interviews include former bodyguards, a former central committee member, a former North Korean spy, CIA profilers, Pentagon advisers, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Donald Gregg, and Selig Harrison, author of Korean Endgame. A BBCW Production. (46 minutes)

5. Undercover in the secret state

Documentary reporting on life in North Korea under the highly repressive regimed of Kim Jong II, using undercover footage and interviews shot by filmmaker Kim Jung Eun and other volunteer dissidents. Includes footage of prison camps and public executions. Also looks at how dissident groups are utilising South Korean soap operas, transmitting them illegally, to foment discontent as they starkly contrast standards of living between the North and South and undermine North Korean propaganda.

6. Welcome to North Korea

This film, shot mostly covertly, shows the irony of a regime where 20 million people lived in poverty, some on the brink of starvation, while former dictator Kim II Sung built extravagant monuments to reflect his power. He fostered a grotesque personality cult, which his son and successor Kim Jong Il perpetuates. All around the capital, Pyongyang, an endless stream of propaganda glorifies the leaders. Monuments and museums pay homage to them, but they are strangely empty.

The contrast between capitalist South Korea and the impoverished North is dramatically shown. The founder of Hyundai, Tsjoen Joe Jung is held in great esteem in the south. He believes in uniting the two Koreas and has made significant donations to economic development in the north, trying to ease the way to reunion.

The film crew was not allowed to interview people at random. The ones "selected to speak to foreigners" gave an idealized image of the regime that was hardly credible. Footage shot secretly by a Chinese relief organization attests to a generation dying from starvation and disease, and suffering terrible human rights abuses. Welcome to North Korea captures in a vivid manner the tight grip the regime has on its people, with a power not used benevolently.

7. Children of the Secret State

Children of the Secret State' is an investigation into North Korea, considered by many as the last Stalinist dictatorship, a hidden and sealed country riddled with propaganda and saturated with hostility to democracy and the West.

Joe Layburn and the Hardcash team discovered a young North Korean, known by the pseudonym 'Ahn Chol', who has been filiming undercover so that the world can see what is going on in his native land: the country where his parents both starved to death.

His devastating footage shows some of the estimated 200,000 street children, mainly orphans, foraging for food in the mud and the gutters, ignored by the adults around them and ignored by the state which claims they are at its bosom.

Joe embarks on a state-run tourist visit of North Korea, revealing vast unoccupied hotels, empty boulevards and countless monuments of Kim Jong II, the county's leader.

8. North Korea - Desperate Or Deceptive

A silent revolution has started in North Korea. This documentary looks behind the closed doors of the country and investigate the social, political and economical changes that happens. North Korea is, despite its fear for changes, a country that needs to embrace the new routine if the current government wishes to keep the power.

9. Nuclear Nightmare : Understanding North Korea

Meet Kim Jong II, leader of North Korea a nation imprisoned by poverty and with a population so hungry, people eat bugs and grass. Now this megalomaniacal dictator is holding the civilized world hostage with what many see as a cunning strategy of extortion, threatening to develop an arsenal of nuclear weapons. It's a strategy by which the United States has indicated it cannot abide. In a joint production between the Discovery Channel and the New York Times, go behind the headlines to discover the little-understood origins and almost-stranger-than-truth facets of this dangerous confrontation. See a side of Kim Jong Il rarely revealed his love of slasher flicks and his affinity for prostitutes and learn why the United States may have no other palatable option than to play ball with Kim, allowing him to continue his weapons development program. It's quite literally a race against time if North Korea, as it promises, goes into nuclear production mode, giving Kim as many as 10 nuclear bombs within six months, it would create a destabilizing offensive nuclear capability that could touch off a regional arms race...and even nuclear war. It's a game of international intrigue and high-stakes military strategy. But more importantly, it's the story of destitute North Korea and its bizarre leader, and how he has brought the U.S. and the world face-to-face with the unimaginable.

10. North Korean Junket

This documentary is 48-minute look at a North Korean propaganda march from 2004. The trip is organized by a group called the Korean Friendship Association. As they zealously espouse Kim Jong Il's version of North Korea (which is little more than a Potemkin Village) their zeal ends up biting themselves in the rear.

11. Parallel Universe - North Korea

How do North Koreans feel about their country's nuclear ambitions and their place in the world? This rare report from inside Pyongyang provides a rare insight into the mindset of North Koreans.

Is Pyongyang really prepared to demolish its Yongbyun nuclear facility? At the demilitarized zone in North Korea, a military officer explain why his country needs nuclear weapons.

12. People and Power

A documentary made by the North Korea government showing what it is like to live in there country under the rule of kim jong ill II

Filmed covertly by two Burmese cameramen who risked an instant 30-year jail sentence if caught, Orphans of Burma's Cyclone reveals, for the first time, what life is like for the ordinary people of Burma.

As Burma's pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, faces trial by the country's military government, this timely and remarkable Dispatches film follows the lives of eight Burmese orphans as they struggle to survive the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.

When the cyclone smashed into Burma's Irrawaddy Delta in 2008 it killed at least 150,000 people and left two million homeless. It also left many thousands of children orphaned in the wake of the deadliest storm ever to hit Burma.

The Burmese government, a military dictatorship that has been in power for 47 years, did next to nothing to support these people left destitute by the storm, and furthermore prevented international aid agencies timely access to the delta region to offer support.

Due to cultural, social and economic factors, traditional preference leans toward boys, so girls are often hidden, aborted, or abandoned. As a result, tens of thousands of girls end up in orphanages across China. Today, more than one quarter of all babies adopted from abroad by American families come from Chinaand nearly all are girls. Ling joins some of these families as they travel to China to meet their new daughters for the first time. Along this emotional journey, she shares in the joy of these growing families and also witnesses firsthand China's gender gap, its roots, and its possible repercussions. Join Ultimate Explorer as Ling explores the many complex issues surrounding China's attempt to slow its swelling tide of humanity. 2004
Seeders: 2
Leeches: 4

Dokumentation, Frankreich / Großbritannien 2004, ARTE F, Erstausstrahlung
Regie: Paul Mitchell, Tania Rakhmanova

Genauso handelt Gerhard Schröder in Deutschland. - The spin must go on!

Washington lobbyists, Newfie pipefitters, Chinese investors and Norwegian industrialists descend on tar-soaked "Fort McMoney", a modern-day Eldorado, where rents are sky rocketing and cocaine abuse is four times the provincial average. Up for grabs - a stake in a $100 billion energy bonanza and Canada's economic sovereignty. This hour-length documentary, commissioned by the CBC, tracks the growth of the world's largest reserve of 'unconventional' oil. This Florida-sized "environmental sacrifice zone" has become Canada's contribution to U.S. energy security in the post-9/11 world. Yet, for many, the tar sands are a global warming disaster. As Fort McMurray bursts at the seams, children from Thunder Bay to Cape Breton are made tar-sands orphans by their migrant-worker parents. Canada's petrodollar breaks the back of the manufacturing economy in the East. Cancer rates skyrocket downstream of Fort McMurray while Rocky Mountain glaciers melt and disappear. And all the while, Alberta crude goes south to U.S. markets while Eastern Canada pays ever more for insecure Middle East oil.===============================================================================------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Information-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Type.................: documentaryMore Information.....: (none)Part Size............: 15,000,000 bytesNumber of Parts......: 49Archive Format.......: RARPart Recovery Method.: PAR2PAR2 Blocks Provided.: 192------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technical Information-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Source...............: NTSC CABLEAVI Size.............: 721,457,152 bytesDuration.............: 43:36.006FPS..................: 29.970Video Codec..........: XviD 1.2 SMP Codec DCT......: H263 QPel...........: No GMC............: NoVideo Bitrate........: 2000 (ABR)Video Resolution.....: 640x464Video Aspect Ratio...: 1.379Audio Format.........: 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3Audio Encoder........: LAME 3.92Bitrate..............: 128kbits/sec (CBR)Hz...................: 48000Channels.............: Stereo
Seeders: 3
Leeches: 2

In a newly updated version of this awarding-winning film, Olenka Frenkiel reports on the plight of North Korean refugees as they seek to escape the communist regime for the chance of a better life elsewhere.

Every year, unseen by the rest of the world, thousands of refugees cross the freezing waters of the Tumen River into China hoping to escape the repressive regime in North Korea. But what is the fate of those who cross into China?

Some are sold into the sex industry. Some may marry but they must live in hiding from the authorities. Their children too live as ghosts. Without official papers they are unable to access education or medical care.

For the first time a South Korean camera crew takes up the cause of their North Korean countrymen and documents their remarkable stories. Chosun Ilbo cameraman staked out on North Korea China border. The trafficked women, their stateless, sometimes orphaned children.

For eight months camera teams from the Chosun Ilbo newspaper watched, filmed and followed the men women and children on their perilous road to safety and offered their material for scrutiny and broadcast to the BBC.

Unreported World Mexico Seven Days in Hell 2008 12 19 (Ch. 4

Category: Documentary
Description:
This week's Unreported World travels to Mexico where international demand for cocaine in the US and Europe has led to the deaths of thousands in a brutal war between gangs fighting for control of cocaine trafficking routes. Reporter Evan Williams and Director Alex Nott provide a snapshot of seven days of death in Culiacan, capital of the northern state of Sinaloa.

As soon as the team arrives they are confronted with victims of the cocaine cartel executions that have become a daily reality for the city's 600,000 inhabitants. The killing is relentless. It includes gang members, police officers and innocent victims. Every few hours the team is called to another killing, dumped body, kidnapping or victim of a shoot-out. ...

...

The violence has become so widespread that Mexico's Federal Government has declared an all-out war against the cartels and called in the army to take them on. In Culiacan, the team follows some of the 3,500 troops as they mount house-to-house raids searching for senior cartel members. But Williams also talks to a human rights investigator who tells him that since the troops arrived in Culiacan the murder rate has doubled and she doubts they are taking on the drug gang bosses....

As they leave Mexico, it's clear to the team that as long as Europe and North America's cocaine habit continues, this wholesale attack on the institutions of an entire country will continue, causing a rising tide of death.
