Sam’s crime: he was attempting to smuggle almost 200 kilograms of marijuana, “B.C. Bud”. Only a few days after his arrest, Sam hanged himself in his jail cell. In Over the Edge, Linden MacIntyre takes us into the world of drug smuggling in B.C. and the role in it of young people like Sam Brown. Sam was an extreme sports enthusiast, who thrived on the adrenaline of risk taking. He grew up in the B.C. interior, living in Nelson, where the flourishing mountain biking scene offered him new challenges. Rugged and picturesque, Nelson is a hotbed for the young and unconventional, a magnet for extreme sports enthusiasts—and a centre for the lucrative, underground marijuana industry. The homegrown pot, “B.C. Bud”, pours billions of illegal dollars into local economies in B.C. Huge demand for the drug has allowed Nelson to ride out normal economic swings. But “B.C. Bud” also fuels a multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise on B.C.’s lower mainland and the United States, sustained largely by a core group of thrill-seekers like Sam—young people who smuggle drugs for the sheer high of the risk and their addiction to the money. In Over the Edge, the fifth estate reconstructs Sam’s final smuggling mission. Linden MacIntyre speaks with a former smuggler who recruited Sam into that world. Viewers will also hear from his sisters and father, still grappling with the circumstances of his arrest and his death, as well as Sam’s American lawyers, some of the last people to speak with him before he took his life. Chumbawamba 1982-2000

Chumbawamba is a Leeds based English anarchist music group. It evolved from its punk roots, through pop, techno, and various other styles, to the folk group which it is now. The band is known for its polyphony and its non-conformant lyrics. The band was formed in 1982 from two other bands based in Yorkshire, The Passion Killers and Chimp Eats Banana. They released a series of albums (such as Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records and the a capella album English Rebel Songs) and singles on their own Agit-Pop label before moving to One Little Indian in the early 90s. On One Little Indian, Chumbawamba released three albums, Slap!, Shhh, and Anarchy, on which influences of techno music are noticeable. The songs for these albums were written in a period when dance culture was thriving and the band were also influenced by it. The music had turned into a more popular sound, which they emphasized was to spread the message more effectively. Touring for Anarchy, the concert at Leeds was recorded for the live album “Showbusiness!”. The last album released on One Little Indian is Swingin’ with Raymond (1995). The albums first six songs are about (the right to) love and ends with seven songs loaded with hate (in the broadest sense of the word: it includes a song about anorexia nervosa). Anarchy or not, the band signed to EMI by 1997. At EMI, Chumbawamba had brief mainstream success, with the singles Tubthumping and Amnesia, taken from Tubthumper. Like Slap! and Shhh, the album was noticeably influenced by techno music. The new Chumbawamba fans needed for an overview, EMI might have thought. With his health in question, and his politics compared to those of Tony Soprano, the field is wide open for sight-challenged town booster and former local football hero Dave Musikant to step in as a long-shot write-in independent candidate--officially making it the only mayoral race in the nation where two of the three candidates are legally blind! Add to the mix the machinations of Jesse "The Body" Ventura's campaign manager, and Anytown USA resonates as an all-too-familiar look at the charade of partisan politics in our increasingly polarized nation.-- Jamie Hook, imdb ENTERTAINMENT VALUE: Even though the election takes place in the small town of Bogota, you will feel as if it were a presidential election. First, thereΓ??s Republican candidate Steven Lonegan, who runs for re-election. As the present mayor of Bogota, his budget cuts got rid of football, which angers many Bogotians. Then thereΓ??s Democrat Fred Pesce, who is quiet and back unlike the final candidate, Dave Musikant, the write-in. Director Kristian Fraga mostly focuses on MusikantΓ??s strategy because heΓ??s the most lively and charismatic of all the candidates. Also, by coincidence, he and Lonegan both happen to be legally blind. You really end up rooting for Musikant because, after all, heΓ??s the underdog. He lives in one of his family memberΓ??s basement and, essentially, heΓ??s unemployed. Eventually, the campaign turns war-like when his promotional signs disappear. Then, when he finds out that Pesce suffers from an illness, he makes it publicΓ??although PesceΓ??s wife doesnΓ??t like him doing that. Fortunately, Musikant has Jesse VenturaΓ??s political aide, Doug Friedline to support him. What makes Anytown, USA so exciting is that it simply makes politics into a fun game without hitting you over the head with Michael Moore-ish, preachy political theories. Nor does director Kristian Fraga make any of the candidates particularly unlikableΓ??even Lonegan shows some hope. Whether you live in Bogota or not, you will care about who wins or loses up until the very last minute. SPIRITUAL VALUE: The game of politics can be unfair and even quite dirty at times. The most difficult struggle is for the grass-roots, write-in candidate Dave Musikant. He was once played football in high school and was pretty famous with the cafeteria ladies who cheer him during his campaign. HeΓ??s not rich, has very few friends, and no experience or education when it comes to politics. However, comes across as a sweet and kind gentleman whoΓ??s courageous enough to face Bogotians door-to-door even though heΓ??s legally blind.
