BBC Earth The Climate Wars 1of3 Battle Begins 2008 WS PDTV

Category: Documentary
Description:
In the 1970s the world seemed to be falling apart. From acid rain to overpopulation, ecological concerns were at the fore. And it was at this time that climate change first became a hot political issue. But it wasn't global warming that frightened scientists, it was the complete opposite; a new ice age.

Dr Iain Stewart traces the history of climate change from its very beginning and examines just how the scientific community managed to get it so very wrong back in the Seventies. Along the way he uncovers some of the great unsung heroes of climate change science, and introduces us to a secret organisation of American government scientists, known as Jason, who wrote the first official report on global warming as far back as 1979.

He shows how - by the late 1980s - global warming had already become a serious political issue. It looked as if the world was uniting to take action. But it turned out to be a false dawn. Because in the 1990s global warming would be transformed into one of the biggest scientific controversies of our age.
Seeders: 13
Leeches: 8

Reporter Kate Seelye visits Nicaragua where, thanks to an alliance between President Daniel Ortega and the Roman Catholic Church, legislation has been passed outlawing abortion under any circumstances. What this ban means in human terms is brought home with unflinching force by the cases Seelye shows us.

We meet pregnant women with health problems that force them into an appalling choice: to endanger their lives by continuing with their pregnancy, or risk jail by seeking an illegal abortion. As usual, Unreported World gives us plenty to think about.

(As in other parts of the 3rd World such as Africa and the Philippines, the Roman Catholic uses unbridled political power to dominate these weak societies. It limits birth control programs so that innocent people are murdered by HIV and millions suffer the slow death of starvation from overpopulation. A real caring bunch.)

PBS Nova - World in the Balance

Category: Documentary
Description:
It took all of human history until 1800 for the worlds population to reach its first billion. Now we add a new billion nearly every dozen years. Over the next half century, 98 percent of that growth will take place in our planet's poorest regions. And as the global total swells to nearly 9 billion by 2050, the social and environmental strains will be enormous.

Through vivid personal stories, The People Paradox reveals many startling trends. In Japan, Europe and Russia, birth rates are shrinking and the population is aging. But in parts of India and Africa, more than half of the still growing population is under 25. The surprising conclusion: world population is now careening in two dramatically different directions.

The second hour, China Revs Up, is an insiders look at Chinas booming economy and its growing impact on the environment. What will happen as China follows Americas affluent lifestyle and begins to rival the U.S. as the worlds biggest polluter?

In this groundbreaking, worldwide investigation of humanitys future, NOVA shows how decisions made now will change the fate of everyone over the next fifty years.
