The battle for land on the southern Filipino island of Mindanao has already claimed 100,000 lives and created a humanitarian disaster with 600,000 people being driven from their homes. Reporter Peter Oborne and director George Waldrum arrive in Cotobato City just after a blast has injured nine people, eight of them young children. Locals claim the attack was carried out by the Filipino national army. The area has been the scene of six bomb attacks in 2009 and, just weeks before, a device exploded outside the cathedral on a Sunday morning, killing six, including a 12-year-old boy. The security forces blame the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF, a long-standing Muslim separatist movement, which they claim has formed links to the Indonesian terror network behind the 2002 Bali bombs. Unlike the rest of the Philippines, which is officially Christian, Mindanao has been a predominantly Muslim island for centuries. Three recent ones were The Flaw of Supply and Demand, The Economic Crisis: No this will not be a Normal Cyclical Recovery, and Global Crisis: Is Economics Rational? In the second, he explains how corporate friendly laws lie at "the root" of the global economic crisis and how they're heading America for third-world status. In the third, he asks: "Do Economists Understand the Causes and Consequences of the Crisis?" The system they front for "benefits only the rich," impedes "the human condition....and unless scrapped" will keep doing it. Discussion will focus on these articles and the state of America today under an administration heading it for tyranny, bankruptcy and ruin. Thursday, April 30th Rachael Rudolph is a Professor of Middle East and Islamic Studies at Emory & Henry College where her research and writing focus mainly on resistance strategies, especially Islamic movements in Algeria, Palestine, and the Philippines. Earlier, she taught at West Virginia University. Her books include from Terrorism to Politics; Mobilizing Movements, Mobilizing Contemporary Islamic Resistance; and Saudi Arabia's War on Terrorism. She's currently working on a new book on the War on Gaza. Sameh Habeeb is a Gaza-based blogger and editor of gazatoday.blogspot.com. He reports daily on conditions in an Occupied Territory under siege and for 22 days last December and January criminally assaulted by the Israeli Defense Forces leaving many thousands dead, wounded, and homeless. Discussion will focus on Gaza under siege with Egypt, Washington, and the international community complicit in blocking desperately needed aid. Farmers and breeders are naturally alarmed because these genes have long existed in the great majority of their pigs. Using DNA tests they can prove that there is no new invention in the patent applications but that, instead, granting this patent would be to allow a part of nature to fall into the hands of a single company. Monsanto's influence on the patent offices is huge. If the patent is approved, money will have to be paid to Monsanto for every pig in the world carrying this genetic marker. This has long been the case for certain feedstuffs, such as genetically modified maize. Many farmers in the US have already become dependent on the company.It is not merely a question of money, however, but also a question of the risk posed to consumers.
