This series explores the delights and difficulties of trying to sustain oneself off what one man can hunt, grow and fish. Te Radar is discovering there is much to keep one occupied on long cold nights in the tent; do saucers of beer really keep snails off cabbages? Does goat make tasty salami? And what happens when the time comes for Willie the pet pig to hit the dinner platter? Off The Radar also touches on topical green issues facing New Zealand like the viability of solar power and how simple steps like composting and starting a worm bin reduce landfill. In his quest to become more self sustainable, Te Radar is calling on the help of many fascinating folk - like Project Pete, the man with at least 100 projects half-finished in his shed and back paddock, Shawn, a local with a degree in fixing things with #8 wire, Pru and Trish the growing gurus and Wolfgang, the self-proclaimed king of scything and mud oven maker. Then there are the animal characters - Sainsbury and Campbell the calves, Willie and JT the pet porkers and a bevy of tasty birds... chickens that is. Chumbawamba 1982-2000

Chumbawamba is a Leeds based English anarchist music group. It evolved from its punk roots, through pop, techno, and various other styles, to the folk group which it is now. The band is known for its polyphony and its non-conformant lyrics. The band was formed in 1982 from two other bands based in Yorkshire, The Passion Killers and Chimp Eats Banana. They released a series of albums (such as Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records and the a capella album English Rebel Songs) and singles on their own Agit-Pop label before moving to One Little Indian in the early 90s. On One Little Indian, Chumbawamba released three albums, Slap!, Shhh, and Anarchy, on which influences of techno music are noticeable. The songs for these albums were written in a period when dance culture was thriving and the band were also influenced by it. The music had turned into a more popular sound, which they emphasized was to spread the message more effectively. Touring for Anarchy, the concert at Leeds was recorded for the live album “Showbusiness!”. The last album released on One Little Indian is Swingin’ with Raymond (1995). The albums first six songs are about (the right to) love and ends with seven songs loaded with hate (in the broadest sense of the word: it includes a song about anorexia nervosa). Anarchy or not, the band signed to EMI by 1997. At EMI, Chumbawamba had brief mainstream success, with the singles Tubthumping and Amnesia, taken from Tubthumper. Like Slap! and Shhh, the album was noticeably influenced by techno music. The new Chumbawamba fans needed for an overview, EMI might have thought. Farmers and breeders are naturally alarmed because these genes have long existed in the great majority of their pigs. Using DNA tests they can prove that there is no new invention in the patent applications but that, instead, granting this patent would be to allow a part of nature to fall into the hands of a single company. Monsanto's influence on the patent offices is huge. If the patent is approved, money will have to be paid to Monsanto for every pig in the world carrying this genetic marker. This has long been the case for certain feedstuffs, such as genetically modified maize. Many farmers in the US have already become dependent on the company.It is not merely a question of money, however, but also a question of the risk posed to consumers.
