The battle for land on the southern Filipino island of Mindanao has already claimed 100,000 lives and created a humanitarian disaster with 600,000 people being driven from their homes. Reporter Peter Oborne and director George Waldrum arrive in Cotobato City just after a blast has injured nine people, eight of them young children. Locals claim the attack was carried out by the Filipino national army. The area has been the scene of six bomb attacks in 2009 and, just weeks before, a device exploded outside the cathedral on a Sunday morning, killing six, including a 12-year-old boy. The security forces blame the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF, a long-standing Muslim separatist movement, which they claim has formed links to the Indonesian terror network behind the 2002 Bali bombs. Unlike the rest of the Philippines, which is officially Christian, Mindanao has been a predominantly Muslim island for centuries. Chumbawamba 1982-2000

Chumbawamba is a Leeds based English anarchist music group. It evolved from its punk roots, through pop, techno, and various other styles, to the folk group which it is now. The band is known for its polyphony and its non-conformant lyrics. The band was formed in 1982 from two other bands based in Yorkshire, The Passion Killers and Chimp Eats Banana. They released a series of albums (such as Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records and the a capella album English Rebel Songs) and singles on their own Agit-Pop label before moving to One Little Indian in the early 90s. On One Little Indian, Chumbawamba released three albums, Slap!, Shhh, and Anarchy, on which influences of techno music are noticeable. The songs for these albums were written in a period when dance culture was thriving and the band were also influenced by it. The music had turned into a more popular sound, which they emphasized was to spread the message more effectively. Touring for Anarchy, the concert at Leeds was recorded for the live album “Showbusiness!”. The last album released on One Little Indian is Swingin’ with Raymond (1995). The albums first six songs are about (the right to) love and ends with seven songs loaded with hate (in the broadest sense of the word: it includes a song about anorexia nervosa). Anarchy or not, the band signed to EMI by 1997. At EMI, Chumbawamba had brief mainstream success, with the singles Tubthumping and Amnesia, taken from Tubthumper. Like Slap! and Shhh, the album was noticeably influenced by techno music. The new Chumbawamba fans needed for an overview, EMI might have thought. And from his leather armchair, in the living room of his private jet, an Airbus A319 that would normally carry 130 passengers, billionaire Vijay Mallya leans forward, chuckles and declares that: “before, America and Europe held centre stage. I guess centre stage is going to move east.” Such is the confidence that now abounds in an economy that boasts a middle-class of 300 million, and more young people than anywhere else on earth — 500 million under 25. See the call center come of age, and Arjun and Sunita’s good life unfold. They are American-trained doctors, married with two kids, running two businesses and clearing email in the car on the way to work. In one business they do radiology over the Internet: a room full of Indian radiologists analyze cat-scans and x-rays of patients sitting in emergency rooms in America. They turn the results round in half an hour. “This is almost space age medicine,” says Arjun, a Yale graduate. But “India on the Move” also reveals that India still has a long way to go. It is all “space age” and “consumer age” in the cities, but medieval in the countryside, where farmers live in dire debt, and an alarming number commit suicide. Corruption is improving, but remains endemic; public education is woeful; and crucially, despite all progress, there remains a desperate need for jobs. The Indian growth of recent times has largely been driven by the service sector and software, but the documentary makes clear that India will have to make widgets and not just digits, if it wants to ever provide enough jobs. The show opens with a lavish Bollywood-themed wedding in the nation’s capital. The bride to be, Neha Chopra, has just met the man her father chose for her. 8,000 guests are invited to the spectacle. Geeta Samuel, a top wedding planner (with a crew of 3200) is helping achieve the bride’s dream of the best wedding in Delhi. Geeta blesses the day she gave up dreams of being a civil servant. Outside, Pradeep, the night-watchman begins work: standing guard at a five-star hotel hosting another lavish wedding. He fears he won’t be able to afford even a modest wedding for his four-year old daughter and worse, he fears she might try for a love marriage. He has no use for Bollywood’s new movies: “I don’t like the fact that the guy is from one caste and the girl is from a different one.” In a high-tech studio in the city-of-dreams itself, Mumbai, a former chartered accountant lives out his dream as a celebrity radio disc-jockey. While his family back home frets about finding him a bride, Tarun is unworried (and unhurried) in searching for a wife. A few hundred kilometers inland, in a dusty village, two young Muslim friends, Farogh and Sheikh, are struggling to make their own cheap knock-offs of the latest Bollywood hits. And with more than 300 channels, television is moving the furniture in India’s social system.
