SYNOPSIS: This documentary "The young Honduran revolution" was made by German-Danish activist Johannes Wilm. While working for the revolutionary Nicaraguan government he snuck across the border to Honduras in early August to document the resistance movement in the neighboring Central American republic, after a military coup had overthrown Leftist president Manuel Zelaya on June 28th. By coincidence he documents how for the first time in nearly thirty years the majority of students rise up against the police in a battle of 3000 students fighting police on the campus of the Autonomous University of Honduras in Tegucigalpa on August 5th. The documentary shows where the student leaders come from, what their analysis of the current situation is, what plans they have for changing it, and what perspective for the future they see both for them personally and for the country at large. It is 90 minutes long and it is made in Spanish with English subtitles. The film has so far been shown in various cities in the south west and in 12 countries in Latin America. It has been featured by a number of Latin American magazines and in the US by the Monthly Review and the Upside Down World site. It will be shown in Los Angeles at the "Human Rights Film Festival" on the 23rd of October, then in Hermosillo, Sonora where it will be shown to journalist students of Kino University on the 27th and to other students at the University of Sonora on the 29th. In Arizona where it will be shown amongst other places at the U of A on the 9th of November and at ASU in Phoenix on the 4th and. At UC Berkley the SDS will present it on the 12th of November.

155 Killed in Double Suicide Bombing in Baghdad
In Baghdad, the death toll from Sunday’s synchronized suicide car bombings has risen to 155. More than 500 people were also injured. It was the deadliest bombing in Iraq in two years. The blasts targeted the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Public Works and the Baghdad provincial government. Dozens of civil servants were among the dead. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki visited the site of the bombings and blamed al-Qaeda and former remnants of Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime. He said the attacks would not affect the political process or parliamentary elections due in January. US troops have been called in to help with the investigation. [includes rush transcript]

Showdown in Chicago: Protesters Greet American Bankers Association Conference
When the American Bankers Association scheduled their annual meeting in Chicago for this week, they probably weren’t expecting the reception they’ve received. Instead of a quiet convention in a downtown hotel, the ABA has been greeted by a parallel gathering of thousands of people in what organizers call the “Showdown in Chicago.” Spearheaded by the group National People’s Action, organizers have tried to bring together a cross-section of Americans affected by the financial meltdown, including homeowners, renters, farmers, workers and retirees. The Showdown kicked off Sunday when protesters entered the lobby of the hotel where the ABA delegates are gathering. [includes rush transcript]

100 Days of Resistance: Al Jazeera's Avi Lewis Reports from Honduras
In Honduras, the conflict between the coup regime and supporters of the ousted president Manuel Zelaya remains at a standstill. Talks broke down last week after the coup regime refused to drop its objection to Zelaya’s return to office. Zelaya has accused the regime of trying to drag out negotiations until the presidential elections it plans to hold next month. Zelaya’s supporters are boycotting the elections, and the international community has refused to recognize them. The Canadian journalist and Al Jazeera English correspondent Avi Lewis recently traveled to Honduras for a rare look at the grassroots movement against the coup regime. This is an excerpt of his report, which aired on the Al Jazeera English program Fault Lines. [includes rush transcript]

Aljazeera - Fault Lines - 100 Days of Resistance - 15-10-09

Category: Documentary
Description:
It has been more than 100 days since Honduras underwent only the second coup in Central America since the end of the cold war.

The crisis has been portrayed as a personal standoff between Manuel Zelaya, the president who was flown out of the country in his pajamas at gunpoint, and Roberto Micheletti, the man who was sworn into power that very same day.

As the country moves haltingly toward elections scheduled for the end of November, Fault Lines travelled to Honduras to learn more, and found that the polarisations run deeper and wider than an easy narrative of political rivalry.

We ask what Honduras means for the tectonic shifts underway in Latin America, the influence of Hugo Chavez and the emerging policies of the Obama administration.

Honduras is a country divided by economic disparity, and members of the tiny group of families that hold the country in their powerful grip speak to Fault Lines.

Social movements are also mobilising in the streets, standing up to repression not just to bring their president back, but to re-found their nation on more equal terms.
Seeders: 2
Leeches: 0

Behind America’s dollar hamburgers and 72-ounce sodas is a key ingredient that quietly fuels our fast-food nation: corn. In KING CORN , recent college graduates Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis leave the east coast for rural Iowa, where they decide to grow an acre of the nation’s most powerful crop.

Alarmed by signs of America’s bulging waistlines, the filmmakers arrive in the Midwest enthusiastic about their new endeavor. For their farm-to-be, they choose a tiny town in Floyd, County, Iowa—a place that, coincidentally, both Ian and Curt’s great-grandfathers called home three generations ago.

They lease an acre of land from a skeptical landlord, fill out a pile of paperwork to sign up for subsidies and discover the U.S. government will pay them 28 dollars for their acre. Ian and Curt start the spring by injecting ammonia fertilizer, which promises to increase crop production four-fold. Then it’s planting time. With a rented high-tech tractor, they set 31,000 seeds in the ground in just 18 minutes.

Their corn has also been genetically modified for another yield-increasing characteristic: herbicide resistance. When the seedlings sprout from Iowa’s black dirt, Ian and Curt apply a powerful herbicide to ensure that only their corn will thrive on their acre.

"The apple juices and the grape juices that are canned and they say 'sweetened,' that’s going to be a high-fructose corn syrup. And then you look down the meats—beefs, porks, chickens. You feed them corn and that gets turned into their biomass that we consume."

By summer, their modern farm is thriving, and the Corn Belt is moving toward a record harvest of 11 billion bushels of corn. But where will all that corn go? With their crop growing head-high, Ian and Curt leave the farm to see where America’s abundance of corn ends up.

As they enter America’s industrial kitchen, they are forced to confront the realities of their crop’s future. In Brooklyn, it sweetens the sodas of a diabetes-plagued neighborhood.

In Colorado, it fattens the feed trough of a 100,000-head cattle feedlot. Ian and Curt are increasingly troubled by how the abundance of corn is helping to make fast food cheap and consumers sick, driving animals into confinement and farmers off the land.

Animal nutritionists confirm that corn feeding can make cows sick and beef fatty, but it also lets consumers have fast food at low prices. As feedlot operator Bob Bledsoe says in KING CORN, “America wants and demands cheap food.” But that ignores the billions in subsidies that agri-corporations receive.

As Ian and Curt discover, almost everything Americans eat contains corn. High-fructose corn syrup, corn-fed meat, and corn-based processed foods are the staples of the modern diet. America’s record harvests of corn are supported by a government subsidy system that promotes corn production beyond all market demand.

As Ian and Curt return to Iowa to watch their 10,000-pound harvest fill the combine’s hopper and make its way into America’s food, they realize their acre of land shouldn’t be planted in corn again—if they can help it. .edit

Hidden Heroes (Dutch Resistance,DVDrip,1999)

The rescue of Jews in Nazi-occupied Holland is a story of unimaginable courage and faith. As told by those who lived through the Nazi terror, this evocative documentary recounts what it was like for Dutch Jews to face systematic isolation, persecution...and elimination. Our subjects were mere children at the time. Children who witnessed their family and friends
being arrested and dragged away — and, for most, never to be seen again. Children for whom unbearable pain and loss was cruelly compressed into a single experience of overwhelming terror.

Hitler’s plan to eliminate an entire race of people may have succeeded if not for those who saw the lie in his quest for perfection, those willing to stand against the Nazi evil—the Dutch resistance. They were ordinary people willing to risk their lives and the lives of their family to shelter and save Dutch Jews. These were Holland’s Hidden Heroes.

Two Canadian women return to the Netherlands to recount the terrifying ordeal they experienced as children at the hands of the Nazis, and to connect with the individuals and families who risked their lives to save them.

At the beginning of this documentary, there's a saying attributed to Mary Jo Leddy:" Although we know something about why people are cruel and violent, we need to learn more about why human beings are good and merciful." This forms the premise of the documentary, which recounts acts of rescue by ordinary Dutch people during the Second World War. These people who came from all walks of life put themselves at great personal risk to rescue and provide refuge to Jewish people who were fleeing the clutches of the Nazis. The focus here is primarily on the rescue of Jewish children, and these survivors who are grown adults in the present give their personal testimonies as to how they were rescued and recount their wartime experiences as well as describe their immense affection and gratitude towards their rescuers.

Many of the Dutch rescuers worked for the Dutch resistance and there is some coverage on the main leaders of the movement such as Mrs Kuipers and Pastor Frits Slomp. There is also mention of the crucial role played by women in the Resistance - as messengers, transporters of refugees, and some were even in the armed branch of the resistance. The Dutch people that provided shelter and acted as foster parents to Jewish children in hiding were mainly devout Christians who felt it was their religious duty to help these helpless and persecuted children.

One particular rescue effort really touched me - the Nazis had set up a 'nursery' for Jewish children who had been forcibly taken from their parents, and these kids were destined for extermination camps in Auschwitz and Sobibor. Well, in the documentary, we learn how members of the Dutch resistance managed to successfully rescue 232 of these doomed children and take them to safety.

Of the 110,000 Dutch Jews transported, only 6,000 survived the Holocaust, and the ones who survived the war in hiding owe their lives to the courage of ordinary Dutch civilians who went to extraordinary lengths to keep them safe. 28,000 Dutch resistance members were killed by the Nazis, and this documentary is a testament to their tremendous courage.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236576/

Paragraph 175 is a LGBT documentary film released in 2000, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, and narrated by Rupert Everett. The film chronicles the lives of several men and women who were arrested by the Nazis for homosexuality under Paragraph 175, the sodomy provision of the German penal code, dating back to 1871.

Between 1933 and 1945, 100,000 men were arrested under Paragraph 175. Some were imprisoned, others were sent to concentration camps. Only about 4,000 survived.

In 2000, fewer than ten of these men were known to be living. Five come forward in the documentary to tell their stories for the first time, considered to be among the last untold stories of the Third Reich.

Paragraph 175 tells of a gap in the historical record and reveals the lasting consequences, as told through personal stories of men and women who lived through it: the half-Jewish gay resistance fighter who spent the war helping refugees in Berlin; Annette Eick, the Jewish lesbian who escaped to England with the help of a woman she loved; the German Christian photographer who was arrested and imprisoned for homosexuality, then joined the army on his release because he "wanted to be with men"; Pierre Seel, the French Alsatian teenager, who watched as his lover was eaten alive by dogs in the camps.

REAL LIFE UPDATE

December 2, 2005 Pierre Seel, who was imprisoned in a concentration camp during World War II for homosexuality, died last week in Toulouse, France. Filmmaker Rob Epstein interviewed Seel for his film Paragraph 175, a documentary about the Nazis' treatment of gay men during the Holocaust, and discusses Seel's life.

This inspirational documentary traces the lives of four brave Dutch citizens who risked their own safety to protect Jewish people from Nazi raids during World War II, all in the name of justice. The filmmakers talk to the actual heroes -- all members of the Dutch resistance who now live in the United States -- to discern their personal motivations for helping others and reveal the prices they paid for taking a dangerous stand.

Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0
