Inside Britain's Israel Lobby.
Dispatches investigates one of the most powerful and influential political lobbies in Britain, which is working in support of the interests of the State of Israel.

Despite wielding great influence amongst the highest realms of British politics and media, little is known about the individuals and groups which collectively are known as the pro-Israel lobby.

Political commentator Peter Oborne sets out to establish who they are, how they are funded, how they work and what influence they have, from the key groups to the wealthy individuals who help bankroll the lobbying. He investigates how accountable, transparent and open to scrutiny the lobby is, particularly in regard to its funding and financial support of MPs.

The pro-Israel lobby aims to shape the debate about Britain's relationship with Israel and future foreign policies relating to it.

Those who have seen the recent torrent called Winstanley by Kevin Brownlow will enjoy
this first effort by Brownlow and Andrew Mollon

Excerpted from the Wiki:

The film was directed by Kevin Brownlow, who later became a prominent film historian, and Andrew Mollo, who was to become a leading military historian. Brownlow developed the concept of the film when he was eighteen, in 1956. He turned to Mollo, a sixteen-year-old history buff, to help him with the design of costumes and sets. Mollo was intrigued by the project, and became his collaborator.

The film was in the making for the next eight years, which the Guinness Book of World Records (as of 2003) calls the longest ever production schedule. It was shot in black and white on 16 mm film, giving it a grainy, newsreel feel. The audio quality (and lighting) on the opening reel is rather poor, which makes the dialog difficult to follow for the first few minutes. It had a cast of hundreds, all volunteers, with only two professional actors among them (Sebastian Shaw, Reginald Marsh). (A number of the extras in the film were members of British science fiction fandom, and a portion was previewed at a science fiction convention in Peterborough.

end excerpt.

;; Using volunteers in the manner that Peter Watkins does drew me to this film and my local library had purchased it. ;; At the time I knew nothing of Brownlow until the re-release of Winstanley (2009).

;; Though not a do it youself effort in the practical sense of the term It Happened Here shows what can be done with minimal production equipment. The subject of occupation is current. A comparison of "It Happened Here" with the recent television series "Jericho" is recommended.

A further exploration of how "newsreel" footage was used in the depiction of war is in "The Victors" (1963) by Carl Foreman and currently available on torrents. For me it is quite telling the difference between what Hollywood stars did in "The Victors" as compared with any crop of Young Lions today. It's not only telling, it's disheartening. "The Victors" is one of the great anti-war films.

Viva Zapatero! is a documentary by Sabina Guzzanti telling her side of the story regarding the conflict with Silvio Berlusconi over a late-night TV political satire show broadcast on RAI-3.

The show, RAIot (a play on the name of the Italian state public TV: RAI, and the English word riot), lampooned prime minister Berlusconi. Since it wasn't considered a satirical show, but a political one, it was cancelled after the first episode.

Story

The TV broadcasting of the satirical program RAIot was censored in November 2003 after the comedienne, Sabina Guzzanti, made outspoken criticism of the Berlusconi media empire. Mediaset, one of Berlusconi's companies, sued the Italian state broadcasting company RAI because of the Guzzanti show asking for 20 million Euro for "damages" and from November 2003 she was forced to appear only in theatres around Italy.

After the show was cancelled, Guzzanti tried fruitlessly to get it reinstated, in spite of the fact that a judge dismissed the case that initially resulted in the termination of the show. Her struggle however, did result in this film. The documentary openly reveals censorship laws that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is presently imposing on the country's freedom of speech. It is seen by some as Italy's "Fahrenheit 9/11."[citation needed]

In August 2005, it was the sleeper hit of the Venice International Film Festival, receiving a 15-minute standing ovation after its premiere screening. When it opened in Italian theaters, over 200,000 people went to see it in the first week. Its success resulted in an invitation to the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

Thursday November 12, 2009 at 8 pm on CBC-TV

The future of the British monarchy is imperilled by the controversial Prince Charles, his reluctant son Prince William and Royal bad boy Prince Harry. A new sovereign can revive a royal family or be its kiss of death. So will the controversial successor to Queen Elizabeth II spell the end of Britain's thousand-year monarchy? This film looks at the shaky future of the House of Windsor, once the beloved Queen passes the crown to her son Charles.

The aging and opinionated Prince of Wales is not widely loved in Britain or abroad. The public still resents his treatment of Lady Diana, his adulterous relationship with Camilla, now destined to be Queen, and his relentless meddling in politics. "An overtly political king," says respected British columnist Johann Hari, "will be death for the monarchy."

Many agree and look to Charles' older son Prince William. But "Wills" is a reluctant Royal, still haunted by the brutal death of his glamorous mother Diana. His brother, Prince Harry, is best known for an unflattering series of public scandals. This documentary chronicles the storm gathering over the House of Windsor, and asks the once unthinkable question: Will the monarchy still be around after Elizabeth? After Elizabeth II is written & directed by Gemini Award winning filmmaker John Curtin.

Premiere Date: November 11, 2009

Synopsis
On call 24 hours a day for the past five years, a group of senior citizens has made history by greeting over 900,000 American troops at a tiny airport in Bangor, Maine. The Way We Get By is an intimate look at three of these greeters as they confront the universal losses that come with aging and rediscover their reason for living. Bill Knight, Jerry Mundy and Joan Gaudet find the strength to overcome their personal battles and transform their lives through service. This inspirational and surprising story shatters the stereotypes of today's senior citizens as the greeters redefine the meaning of community. A co-production of Dungby Productions and ITVS in association with WGBH and Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Bill Moyers - The Public Mind (1989) Pt3 Illusions of News

Category: Documentary
Description:
Bill Moyers
"The Public Mind: Image and Reality in America" (1989)
Part Three: "Illusions of News"

PBS broadcast -> VHS -> Xvid/MP3

Bill Moyers followed his successful "The Power of Myth" and "The World of Ideas" series with a four-part overview of "image and reality in America." The third part of the series, "Illusions of News," is particularly powerful in its discussion of the news media and how it serves the purposes of the powerful. Much of what is revealed in this program, now 20 years old, still holds true today.

Beginning with the assertion that the "market determines the news," Moyers interviews various media critics (including authors Ben Bagdikian and Todd Gitlin), and personalities (Lesley Stahl of CBS News and Fred Friendly) to determine the extent of the problem. While the idea of news as entertainment is fairly old hat, Moyers reveals that television news is now the victim of its own showmanship. Politicians have discovered the power of the image, and no longer bother with issues--whether the news teams want them or not. TV news is now at the mercy of Presidents and other politicians who decide exactly what they want the public to see. This is electronic journalism at its most meaningful, made even more compelling by host Moyers, who has the honesty to question the apparatus which he freely admits provides his own bread and butter.

In Guantanamo

Category: Documentary
Description:
Guantanamo naval base, 'Gitmo', covers forty five square miles of Cuba inside an area under a controversial 'permanent lease' to the United States. Since 2002, the base has become synonymous with its detainment facilities for suspected terrorists. Although Barack Obama has given orders for the detention camp to be closed, the facilities remain open to this day. David Miller's quiet, powerful film is the result of three days the filmmaker spent touring the camps in May 2008 as part of a small group of media representatives allowed there. Although the event was presented as a chance to 'see inside' the working of Guantanamo, it was in fact a carefully staged PR exercise designed to yield predictable, stale, controlled media images.

The film was produced in 2008/2009 in conjunction with Yvonne Ridley, PRSNL Pictures and the VODO team. Special thanks to Editor Luca Lucarini.

ABOUT VODO

VODO is founded by Jamie King, one of the figures behind STEAL THIS FILM (www.stealthisfilm.com). VODO brings filmmakers together with the distribution power of the filesharing community. It aims to offer fresh, quality films on a free-to-share basis, promoted and distributed through a 'coalition' of filesharing partners that includes big names like The Pirate Bay, Mininova, Miro, TorrentFreak, Isohunt, Plube, OneDDL Vuze and and Frostwire, amongst many others.

'Together, the filesharing community has a distribution capacity that rivals and even exceeds that of the mainstream media,' says Jamie King. 'VODO aims to leverage that power for the benefit of filmmakers and other creators. By sharing films freely through the most popular and fastest growing filesharing sites, we're building audiences in the hundreds of thousands for artists. That has material value for these filmmakers, through raised profile, donations and marketing. It's a win-win situation and it's the future of distributing media after copyright.'

Followers of release groups like aXXo will be familiar with the model. But VODO is a release group with a twist. Not only are artists voluntarily sharing: downloaders can choose to make voluntary donations to creators. VODO lets creators manage their own donation links, with all donations going directly to the filmmaker. Regular supporters of the VODO project will receive access to all the films being considered for release.

VODO aims to release at least one film per month during the rest of 2009 and 2010. Forthcoming titles include the premiere of 'In Guantanamo', a documentary by first-time director David Miller that provides unprecedented access to the Guantanmo prison camps - but King says that fiction titles, animation and shorts will also be on the distribution list. 'During 2010 VODO will build out a series of revenue opportunities for its creators, with the free-to-share model at their core,' he explains.

ABOUT THE TEAM

VODO collaborators include Nils Hellberg of Piratbyran (Sweden, Design) and Rama Cosentino of BurnStation (Argentina, programming), with programming support by Dan O' Huiginn (UK). Members of the advisory board include Ashwin Navin, ex-CEO of Bittorrent Inc., and Peter Sunde of The Pirate Bay. VODO, which has been in development
since 2008, has been produced with the support of the Arts Council UK, Emerald Fund and the Channel 4 British Documentary Film Foundation. VODO's not hiring right now, but it is looking for voluntary collaborators to help out as it grows and takes shape. Just send an email to info@vodo.net to find out more.
Seeders: 1622
Leeches: 110
