Six years after the end of a brutal civil war in which rape was routinely used as a weapon, children still face the daily fear of being attacked, and the West African country's hospitals are overwhelmed with child victims, a quarter of them under four years old. In the Liberian capital, Monrovia, reporter Jenny Kleeman and director Matt Haan meet Mercy, a six-year-old girl who was abducted and raped by a stranger two weeks previously. Mercy is taking a course of drugs to try to stop her from contracting HIV. She lives in a safe house run by a Liberian charity, which is filled with other child rape victims. Edit... The team visits a children's hospital run by the charity Médecins Sans Frontières. Elias Abi-Aad tells Kleeman that his unit saw 771 child rape victims in 2008 and in the first six months of 2009 had already seen 422 victims, but he estimates this is only a small fraction of the total number of cases in Liberia. Victims suffer serious medical problems as a result of their ordeal and the hospital saw three recent cases where children died as a direct consequence of rape. ..... The UN acknowledges there have been problems of sexual abuse and exploitation by peacekeepers in Liberia, including a few that allegedly involve underage girls. They say they take allegations very seriously and have promised to investigate Oretha and Sarah's claims. ... Liberia's civil war has left the country with a culture of impunity, and a culture where men want to have sex with very young girls. President Obama will reportedly make the announcement at the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh later today. The alleged site is not yet operational. The Obama administration says it decided to make the allegations public after discovering Iran was aware Western intelligence agencies had monitored the site. Earlier today, European officials said Iran notified the International Atomic Energy Agency of a previously undisclosed uranium enrichment plant earlier this week. UN Security Council OKs Nuclear Proliferation Measure The UN Security Council has unanimously passed a resolution to limit nuclear proliferation. The US-drafted measure calls for further efforts to achieve “a world without nuclear weapons.” But critics say it fails to include mandatory provisions that would have required nuclear states to take concrete disarmament steps. The resolution also lacks any call on states to halt production of fissile materials for nuclear weapons. President Obama became the first US president to chair a UN Security Council summit, which also marked the fifth summit-level meeting of the council in its sixty-three years of existence. President Obama: “In the six-plus decades that this Security Council has been in existence, only four other meetings of this nature have been convened. I called for this one so that we may address, at the highest level, a fundamental threat to the security of all peoples and all nations: the spread and use of nuclear weapons.” 5 US Troops Killed in Afghanistan In Afghanistan, five US troops were killed Thursday in two southern provinces. Thirty-four US troops have been killed in Afghanistan this month. Last month was the deadliest month for the US, with fifty-one soldiers killed. US Strike Kills 4 in Pakistan In Pakistan, at least four people were killed Thursday in a suspected US air strike. The attack reportedly struck a town in the North Waziristan tribal region. It comes as the US Senate has approved a measure that would triple Pakistan aid to $7.5 billion over five years. Senate Finance Panel Rejects Curbs on Drug Costs The Senate Finance Committee has rejected a proposal that would have forced pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices for elderly Americans under Medicare. The measure would have saved Medicare beneficiaries more than $100 billion over ten years. The Obama administration had opposed the proposal because it would have undercut a secretive deal with pharmaceutical companies to back healthcare reform. Three Democratic senators-–Max Baucus of Montana, Thomas Carper of Delaware and Robert Menendez of New Jersey—joined with the finance panel’s Republican members to defeat the amendment by a 13-to-10 vote. Committee members meanwhile have put off debate on a public insurance option until next week. Jailed Suspect Charged in Terror Plot A Colorado man jailed since last week has been charged with conspiring to launch a bomb attack inside the United States. Twenty-four-year-old Najibullah Zazi is accused of acquiring and preparing explosive materials similar to those used in the 2005 London transit bombings. Prosecutors say Zazi bought chemicals from beauty supply stores and experimented with preparing deadly explosives. It’s unclear if authorities believe Zazi intended to attack a specific target. Zazi was initially arrested along with his father and a New York imam on allegations of lying to federal agents. On Thursday, both the father and the imam were freed on bail. The imam, Ahmad Wais Afzali, denied the allegations against him. Ahmad Wais Afzali: “As imam, it’s against Islamic law to hurt anybody, period. I am very much against this myself, very much against this. And the last time I saw Zazi was God knows how many years ago. That’s about it.” Zelaya Rules Out Coup Regime Talks In Honduras, the ousted President Manuel Zelaya says preliminary talks with the coup regime have gone nowhere. On Thursday, Zelaya said there is no chance of reaching an agreement with coup leaders and vowed to continue his attempt to return to office. Zelaya remains holed up inside the Brazilian embassy, surrounded by armed Honduran forces. In a separate interview, Zelaya accused the Honduran military of subjecting him and his supporters to toxic gases and radiation. White House Retracts Promise to Block Israel War Crimes Prosecution The White House is disavowing a top official’s promise to block a recent UN inquiry’s call that alleged Israeli war crimes be potentially referred to the International Criminal Court. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported this week a top White House official had made the promise in an off-the-record conversation with Jewish leaders. The official apparently said the administration would not allow the report’s recommendations to go beyond the UN Human Rights Council. A White House spokesperson later said the official had “misspoke.” Chavez Criticizes US-Colombia Base Deal Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was among the world leaders speaking Thursday at the UN General Assembly. Chavez invoked his 2006 speech in which he called former President George W. Bush a “devil” and said he now senses hope with President Obama in office. But Chavez criticized what he called the continued dominance of the Pentagon. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez: “The Pentagon, that is the imperialists’ cave. The Pentagon does not want Obama. They don’t want him. They don’t want change. They want world dominance with their military bases, their threats, their bombs, their invading soldiers.” Chavez went on to criticize Obama’s recent UN address, saying plans for US military bases in Colombia contradict Obama’s stated commitment to peace. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez: “He thinks of finding peace, his second pillar, with seven military bases in Colombia? Those seven bases are a threat to a possible peace in Colombia, if not peace in South America. We, the governments of South America, have reason to have expressed, in each our own way and intensity, our great worry over the installation of these seven American military bases on Colombian territory.” US Opens Burma Junta Talks The Obama administration has announced it’s begun direct engagement with the Burmese military junta in a push for democratic reforms. The US isn’t lifting sanctions, but says it will increase dialogue with junta members. The approach has drawn backing from leading Burmese democracy advocates, including the jailed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Study Warns of Global Temperature Rise A new study says global warming is increasing at a higher rate than previously thought. The United Nations Environment Program says researchers now predict the planet’s temperature will rise 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century even if the most ambitious proposals to address climate change are enacted. The temperature rise is two times higher than what scientists have previously identified as the maximum humans can afford to avert a climate disaster. Patrick Appoints Interim Kennedy Successor Back in the United States, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has named former Democratic National Committee chair Paul Kirk to the Senate seat vacated by the death of the late Senator Edward Kennedy. Kirk was said to be the pick of Kennedy’s family. He will fill the seat until Massachusetts holds a special election in January. Thousands Protest Budget Cuts, Tuition Hikes at California Schools And in California, thousands of professors, students and workers at all ten University of California campuses staged a protest Thursday against tuition hikes and cuts to education funding. Student tuition is set to rise as much as 32 percent over the next year. The statewide action came as most of the schools held their first day of classes.

Bush but embraced by an international delegation of friends: the Korean Friendship Association.They set out for a march through North Korea. Its aim: to show solidarity with the regime and the North Korean people. The authorities even allowed some US citizens in and an American journalist from ABC. This 'International March for Korea's Peace and Reunification' is organised by the KFA, the Korean Friendship Association; a worldwide group of supporters of North Korea. Its leader is a 29 year old Spanish citizen, Alejandro Cao de Benos de Les y Perez. Originating from an aristocratic family he heads an organization with mainly young members who are fed up with the consumerism of the Western world. In 12 days the 22 participants of the march travel through a country full of monuments, propaganda and poverty. Friends of Kim is a film about idealism, trust and crime. What begins as a magical mystery tour ends in a road to claustrophobia. 2. Holidays in the Axis of Evil The Bush regime claims that North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya and Cuba are part of an "axis of evil". In a remarkable two-part travelogue, reporter Ben Anderson, armed with a hidden camera and a tourist map, visits all six rogue states and tries to find the reality of life in some of the most repressive regimes in the world. He spoke to us about this unusual vacation. 3. North Korea: A Day in the Life A day in the life of an ordinary familyà in North Korea, land of the beloved leader Kim Jong-il. Filmmaker Pieter Fleury gives us a glimpse into the world of Hong Sun Hui, a female textile worker. At the factory, everything is highly controlled and all the workersÆ actions and results are meticulously entered in notebooks. Like puppets, the workers impassively carry out their tasks and finish their days singing hymns to the glory of Kim Jong-il. In her kindergarten class, HongÆs daughter learns that ôflowers need the sun and she needs the love of the Great Leader to grow.ö When the family gathers at home in the evening, the propaganda continues to flow through the television. Unexpectedly, relief from the Orwellian control and clockwork regularity comes from the English classes that HongÆs brother is taking: they provide a moment of humour and open-mindedness. The mechanisms of this perfect system of indoctrination and oppression are depicted through coldly precise images. The resulting film is a terrifying vision of a totalitarian state that recalls MaoÆs China, on which it was largely based. Absurd, grotesque, but sadly true. 4. The Real Dr. Evil North Koreans call him "dear leader." President Bush calls him part of an "axis of evil." Kidnapper, terrorist, and likely nuclear tyrant also apply. This program uses extensive newsreel footage, archival materials, and exclusive interviews to create a biographical and psychological profile of Kim Jong Il in order to understand what motivates his sometimes bizarre and often tragic deeds. Interviews include former bodyguards, a former central committee member, a former North Korean spy, CIA profilers, Pentagon advisers, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Donald Gregg, and Selig Harrison, author of Korean Endgame. Undercover in the secret state Documentary reporting on life in North Korea under the highly repressive regimed of Kim Jong II, using undercover footage and interviews shot by filmmaker Kim Jung Eun and other volunteer dissidents. Includes footage of prison camps and public executions. Also looks at how dissident groups are utilising South Korean soap operas, transmitting them illegally, to foment discontent as they starkly contrast standards of living between the North and South and undermine North Korean propaganda. 6. Welcome to North Korea This film, shot mostly covertly, shows the irony of a regime where 20 million people lived in poverty, some on the brink of starvation, while former dictator Kim II Sung built extravagant monuments to reflect his power. He fostered a grotesque personality cult, which his son and successor Kim Jong Il perpetuates. All around the capital, Pyongyang, an endless stream of propaganda glorifies the leaders. Monuments and museums pay homage to them, but they are strangely empty. The contrast between capitalist South Korea and the impoverished North is dramatically shown. The founder of Hyundai, Tsjoen Joe Jung is held in great esteem in the south. He believes in uniting the two Koreas and has made significant donations to economic development in the north, trying to ease the way to reunion. The film crew was not allowed to interview people at random. The ones "selected to speak to foreigners" gave an idealized image of the regime that was hardly credible. Footage shot secretly by a Chinese relief organization attests to a generation dying from starvation and disease, and suffering terrible human rights abuses. Welcome to North Korea captures in a vivid manner the tight grip the regime has on its people, with a power not used benevolently. 7. Children of the Secret State Children of the Secret State' is an investigation into North Korea, considered by many as the last Stalinist dictatorship, a hidden and sealed country riddled with propaganda and saturated with hostility to democracy and the West. Joe Layburn and the Hardcash team discovered a young North Korean, known by the pseudonym 'Ahn Chol', who has been filiming undercover so that the world can see what is going on in his native land: the country where his parents both starved to death. His devastating footage shows some of the estimated 200,000 street children, mainly orphans, foraging for food in the mud and the gutters, ignored by the adults around them and ignored by the state which claims they are at its bosom. Joe embarks on a state-run tourist visit of North Korea, revealing vast unoccupied hotels, empty boulevards and countless monuments of Kim Jong II, the county's leader. 8. North Korea - Desperate Or Deceptive A silent revolution has started in North Korea. This documentary looks behind the closed doors of the country and investigate the social, political and economical changes that happens. Directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady wisely chose to avoid the polemical tone of most politically-motivated films, and instead opt to present a mostly unfiltered glimpse of this odd subculture. But through carefully selected images and the use of talk radio commentary as a framing device, they construct a subtle, yet damning narrative about a religious movement that isolates its children from mainstream culture, indoctrinates them into right-wing causes, and uses them as political props. At Jesus Camp, the daily activities include standard camp fare such as spelunking and go-karts, but they also include speaking in tongues and smashing coffee mugs emblazoned with the word "government". Children learn that "science doesn't prove anything," and learn to consider themselves part of an Army of God. They are compelled to pledge that they will fight to end abortion. They are even pushed into publicly confessing their impure thoughts, and many of them cry and wail charismatically. The camp director explains that she admires the way Islamic cultures raise children so devote they will risk their lives for their faith. When we ultimately see several of the campers being placed by their parents on the steps of the Capitol with tape over their mouths, protesting abortion, the real purpose of this camp is driven home. But the most touching scenes are the ones where the children are alone, and we see the ways that this indoctrination creeps into the most innocent elements of childhood. 11 year old Tori loves dancing to Christian rock, but frets that it's not always easy to dance for God instead of "dancing for the flesh." On an outing to the bowling alley, 9 year old Rachael feels compelled to walk up to strangers and awkwardly evangelize to them, without being prompted. A roomful of boys telling ghost stories after dark are interrupted by an adult who warns them about stories that don't glorify God. No doubt some viewers will accuse the filmmakers of the dreaded liberal bias. But this is not a work of fiction, nor is it slanted reporting. These are real people and real events, captured on film. If the evangelical movement comes off badly in this film, the people on screen have no one but themselves to blame. With no narration, the viewer will decide for themselves the virtues or the failings of a society choosing evangelistic Summer Schools for it's children.
