An extraordinary insight into the secretive world of the Old Order Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Trouble In Amish Paradise tells the story of Ephraim and Jessie Stoltzfus who, along with their wives, have become disillusioned with the amount of control the church now exerts over their lives.

They are extremely proud of their Amish heritage and have no wish to leave their community, but feel they can no longer unquestioningly follow every pronouncement from the bishops.
Church And Culture Are Not The Same

As more and more Amish read the Bible in English, rather than the original German, some have begun to ask who they should be following – the leaders, or the word of God. As Ephraim observes, “They combine church and culture and that’s wrong, you cannot do that.

If that’s the way it’s supposed to be then Jesus would have made those rules specific and said ‘You gotta drive a horse with a green harness or you to go hell’. And he didn’t say that.” Jesse and Ephraim, along with several other families in the community, gather regularly for bible study classes, which is strictly forbidden by the bishops.

These two radical Amish men, Ephraim and Jesse Stoltzfus, start to question some of the most fundamental aspects of their Amish culture, they face excommunication from their church and total rejection by their friends and family.

Documents released by Congress this week offer powerful new evidence that Karl Rove and other senior Bush administration figures took the lead in the firing of nine US attorneys in 2006. We speak to former New Mexico US attorney David Iglesias, who was fired after refusing Republican pressure to take on allegations of voter fraud and pursue cases against Democrats to help a Republican lawmaker’s re-election campaign. Parole Hearing to Be Held Tuesday for Imprisoned Native American Activist Leonard Peltier
The sixty-four-year-old activist has been in prison for thirty-three years and is now being held at the Lewisburg prison in Pennsylvania. Peltier was convicted of killing two FBI agents during a shootout on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1975. At his last hearing, the Parole Commission originally denied Peltier parole in 1993 based on their finding that he “participated in the premeditated and cold blooded execution of those two officers.” However, the Parole Commission has since said it “recognizes that the prosecution has conceded the lack of any direct evidence that [Peltier] personally participated in the executions of the two FBI agents.” Peltier has long maintained his innocence and is widely considered a political prisoner who was not granted a fair trial. Labor Victory in Guadeloupe After Six-Week Strike Reverberates Across French Caribbean and France
The financial crisis has had reverberations beyond the United States and Europe, with people taking to the streets in cities across the globe to protest rising wealth inequality and to call for economic and labor rights. Perhaps the most significant action took place in the French Caribbean, on the island of Guadeloupe. Amid rising costs of living, labor leaders in Guadeloupe led a forty-four-day general strike that closed down roads, schools, gas stations and public transportation. The strikers claimed a victory earlier this month with a plan to improve wages and living standards. [includes rush transcript]

from wikipedia
High School is a 1968 direct cinema documentary film which follows the typical day of a group of students at their high school (Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.)

It was one of the first direct cinema (or cinéma vérité) documentaries. This film was actually banned from being shown in Philadelphia for a number of years due to the way it depicted high schoolers as being oppressed, although the students, faculty, and administrators in the film all attested after the first screening of the film that they were shown in an accurate light.

The movie was directed by Frederick Wiseman and was selected in 1991 for preservation in the National Film Registry. (Source: IMDB)

This movie ranked number 13 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 Best High School Movies.
Seeders: 3
Leeches: 3

Death by Taser: Police Accused of Cover-Up in Death of African American Man Shocked Nine Times While in Handcuffs
Police in the city of Winnfield, Louisiana are being accused of covering up the death of twenty-one-year-old Baron Pikes. He died in police custody on January 21 after being shot nine times with a taser gun while in handcuffs. The city police chief initially claimed that Pikes was high on crack cocaine and PCP at the time of his death. But the coroner recently ruled Pikes’ death to be a homicide, after an autopsy determined there were no drugs in his system. The coroner also determined that the police shot Pikes twice after he lost consciousness. We speak with Chicago Tribune reporter Howard Witt, who broke the story nationally; Kayshon Collins, Baron Pikes’ stepmother; and Winnfield Police Lieutenant Charles Curry.
John Pilger - Palestine Is Still The Issue - DvDRip - XviD

Category: Documentary
Description:
Movies : Documentary : DVD Rip : English

In 1977, the award-winning journalist and film-maker, John Pilger, made a documentary called Palestine Is Still The Issue (1977). He told how almost a million Palestinians had been forced off their land in 1948, and again in 1967. In this in-depth documentary, he has returned to the West Bank of the Jordan and Gaza, and to Israel, to ask why the Palestinians, whose right of return was affirmed by the United Nations more than half a century ago, are still caught in a terrible limbo -- refugees in their own land, controlled by Israel in the longest military occupation in modern times.

"The fate and struggle of the Palestinians," says Pilger, "are not just critical to the overdue recognition of their basic human rights, but are also central to whether the region, and the wider world, are plunged into war. Israel is now one of the biggest military powers in the world. While nothing changes, the dangers become greater. This is a film about a nation of people, traumatized, humiliated and yet resilient. In trying to liberate less than a quarter of historic Palestine, they have had no army, no air force, and no powerful friends -- and have fought back with slingshots and now with the terrorism of the suicide bombers."

In a series of extraordinary interviews with both Palestinians and Israelis, John Pilger weaves together the issue of Palestine. He speaks to the families of suicide bombers and their victims; he sees the humiliation of Palestinians imposed on them at myriad checkpoints and with a permit system not dissimilar to apartheid South Africa's infamous pass laws. He goes into the refugee camps and meets children who, he says, "no longer dream like other children, or if they do, it is about death."

Continually asking for the solution, John Pilger says it is time to bring justice, as well as peace, to Palestine.

Reviews:

"[Pilger] allows the viewer to hear candid and powerful statements that it is vital for outsiders to hear. I would advise professors: If you don't have time to show the entire video in your class, at least show your students the first fifteen minutes. The frank comments by both Palestinians and Israelis...will provide the basis for a spirited debate among the students for the remainder of the class period." Ann Lesch, Villanova University, Middle East Studies Association Bulletin

"Highly recommended for its bold analysis of the Palestine problem...crucial viewing for those interested in challenging their assumptions." Michael J. Coffta, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Educational Media Reviews Online

"John Pilger has made a well-informed and engaging documentary against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. His argument is clear and consistent throughout: the root cause of violence in Israel/Palestine is Israeli colonialism. Israel has dehumanized the Palestinians and subjugated them to the longest occupation in modern times, and the Palestinians have been resisting the occupation and fighting for their freedom and independence. These facts are incontestable, and Pilger presents them very well, mixing interviews, authorial commentary, and historical narration to convey a picture of a whole society degraded and denied its fundamental national and human rights." Bashir Abu-Manneh, Journal of Palestine Studies
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 10
