Welcome to Sarajevo Directed by Micheal Winterbottom (1997)

Welcome to Sarajevo Directed by Micheal Winterbottom (1997)

Nothing that British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom made before Welcome to Sarajevo (including Butterfly Kiss and Jude) suggested the clarifying rage of this 1997 film, which is based on the experiences of British journalist Michael Nicholson while on assignment in Bosnia. Made emotionally numb by the savagery and insanity of Serbian aggression on Sarajevo and surrounding towns and countryside, reporter Michael Henderson (Stephen Dillane in a remarkable performance) awakens to the plight of one orphanage and particularly to that of a girl whom he promises to rescue. Henderson's efforts lead to a harrowing bus journey to (temporary) protection for some of the kids (others, quite shockingly, are carried off en route by Serb marauders), and then a second, even more dangerous good deed to finish what he started. The film's dimensions go well beyond that story line, however, as Winterbottom re-creates the gallows-humor culture of international correspondents in a blighted region, as well as the nightmare of the Sarajevo siege. Most savage of all, however, is the director's use of news clips in a pointed attack on the West's refusal to deal with the slaughter and outrages in Bosnia at their peak. The supporting cast might look like a bunch of famous names (Kerry Fox, Marisa Tomei) used decorously to attract attention to the film, but in fact everyone is very good, especially Woody Harrelson as an American journalist whose entrance in the story is one of the most memorable in recent history.
Seeders: 0
Leeches: 0

After the kidnapping of the Swiss Ambassador in Brazil in 1970, 70 political prisoners were released from Brazilian prisons and set free in Chile on an exchange agreement. The directors of this film, Haskell Wexler and Saul Landau, went to Chile and recorded first-hand interviews with the former prisoners, revealing the torture that was part of everyday routine interrogation in Brazilian prisons. The film shows reenactments of waterboarding, pau de arara and other medieval and modern "procedures" administered by Brazil's military government.

Three Canadian soldiers have been shipped out to Afghanistan and
are based deep in the heart of the conflict: Kandahar Province,
where the Taliban insurgency is fiercest. Every day, Canadian
soldiers on the ground confront the chaos and violence of life
"outside the wire". They don’t have the big picture; they’re not
interested in the policy. They’re just trying to help the people,
protect each other...and survive.

Afghanada gives us a grunts’-eye-view of the conflict . The sound
is edgy and gritty, the impact immediate, pushing the listener into
an auditory journey that is impossible to escape. It is a
reflection of the very real situation Canadian soldiers are facing
every day in Afghanistan.

----

The Afghanada cast includes Billy MacLellan as Private Lucas
"Chucky" Manson, Jenny Young as Sergeant Pat "Coach" Kinsella, Paul
Fauteux as Private Dean "The Machine" Donaldson, Jordan Pettle as
Corporal Jakes, Anousha Alamian as Sami and Khan Soroor.

Episode 13:

Hockey Night in Kandahar. An argument over the merits of the Leafs
vs. the Habs leads to a not-so-friendly ball hockey match between
our combat unit and the Rear Echelon Supply Section - the boys who
man the base at Kandahar Airfield and never have to risk their
lives outside the wire.

Episode 14:

Events take a drastic turn when a Canadian MP meets a Afghan
warlord, now a "politician", about arranging direct negotiations
with the Taliban. At the press conference afterward, some of the
warlord's private thugs object to remarks a Canadian journalist
makes about their boss and take matters into their own hands.

Episode 15:

With a wounded Sergeant Kinsella on her way to hospital at Kandahar
Airfield, the remaining Section is sent on a house-to-house search
for the kidnapped Canadian journalist. They are assigned a new
officer who it turns out has a "history" with Dean Donaldson that
goes back to their high school years together in Sudbury.

Episode 16:

With a "newbie" assigned to the Section, the soldiers head out to
re-supply an Australian Patrol Base. The Aussies have not seen a
Taliban fighter in months, and they have been forced to entertain
themselves. The Section discovers that they are succeeding
admirably there, but something in their gut tells them that things
aren't quite right.

Episode 17:

A routine presence patrol lands the unit on security duty in a
Kandahar market place following a suicide bombing. Section newbie,
Corporal Darcy, doesn’t seem to be up to his new responsibilities
"outside the wire" and Coach is determined to get to the bottom of
his problem before it endangers the safety if her men.

Episode 18:

A helicopter crash strands the Section without their weapons while
on their way to deliver an unusual prisoner to the Americans. The
prisoner convinces them to seek refuge in an enemy Afghan village,
but even he is surprised by the consequences.

Episode 19:

The Section has been pulled out of combat for a special task deep
outside the wire. Meanwhile, Coach is struggling with some
unexpected feelings that could threaten the performance of her
duties.

Episode 20:

A controversial NGO brings Romeo and Juliet to Kandahar City. It’s
intended as a sign of hope to the locals, an alternative to the
Taliban, but staging the production proves to be a risky
proposition. Then the Section is ordered to provide security for
the opening of a school built in Taliban territory by the same NGO.
In the midst of all this, Private Manson finds his own Juliet.

Episode 21:

A visiting Master Corporal joins the Section on a reconnaissance
mission. Intelligence has indicated that the Taliban are about to
move in and take over a town controlled by the Afghan Army. The
battle goes badly, and in the aftermath things turn ugly when the
visiting soldier’s actions put him at odds with the rest of the
Section. Meanwhile, Dean becomes increasingly worried as
relationships within the unit spiral downward.

Episode 22:

April 6. Morale is at an all time low in the Section as they move
in to retake a town from the Taliban. The unit takes a devastating
blow when one of their members is killed in a surprise ambush Coach
blames herself and begins to doubt her ability to lead. This is the
final episode of the first season of Afghanada.
Seeders: 4
Leeches: 0

Program Info
** 2008 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL - OFFICIAL SELECTION **

Directed by Ivan O'Mahoney & Laura Winter
80 Minutes

Baghdad High views the current war in Iraq through the eyes of four Iraqi teens as they enter their senior year of high school. Filmed by the boys themselves, the documentary follows their friendships during the entire academic year and offers unique insight into ordinary adolescent Iraqi lives.

"The daily news about Iraq was so relentlessly depressing for so many years," says Ivan O'Mahoney, who directed and produced the film with Laura Winter. "It was therefore fantastic to realize while making this film that there is normality amidst all the violence, and that people do lead normal lives, despite the mayhem around them. It gave me a lot of hope to see kids be kids."

Collectively, the teens recorded more than 300 hours of tape, which were woven into the final project by the supervising producers. A mix of religious and ethnic backgrounds, the young men featured in BAGHDAD HIGH include: Hayder, who yearns to be a singer-songwriter; Anmar, who thinks he is a stud with girls and plays soccer like David Beckham; Ali, who dreams of being an architect; and his best friend Mohammed, who doesn't yet know what he wants to be, and is content being the joker of the bunch. They could be teens in any city around the world, talking about celebrities like Britney Spears, debating who has the best-ripped jeans and discussing whose hair is a disaster. But their lives are actually very different: Every day, they are surrounded by suicide bombings, mortar attacks, kidnappings and citywide curfews.

Notes co-director and co-producer Laura Winter, "One of the things I was struck by was that all these documentaries coming out of Iraq were done for, or by, adults. Iraqi children had not been more than a UN statistic about the dead, kidnapped or injured."

The first day of school - Oct. 1, 2006 - marks the beginning of the most violent month since America invaded Iraq. That month, 2,722 men, women and children die, many because of their religion. However, the boys don't let religious, ethnic or economic differences come between them.

They often miss school because leaving the house is too dangerous. They debate whether they can hang out with each other after school, because the short journey home afterward means running the risk of being injured by a roadside bomb or a stray bullet. Even if they want to study, concentration is difficult in a war zone, and the electricity often goes out unexpectedly for hours or days at a time. As the city is torn apart by sectarian violence, each of the 17-year-olds and his family struggle to make a critical decision - stay in Baghdad and risk their lives, or flee to safer areas. Every day, nearly 2,000 Baghdad residents leave, joining some four million refugees who are already relocated around the country or live in Jordan and Syria.

"The fact that the kids are all from different backgrounds, and yet remained friends as their city was torn to bits by sectarian violence, was one of the most satisfying parts of making BAGHDAD HIGH," states Laura Winter. "It filled us with great hope for Iraq's future - and maybe ours, too."

BAGHDAD HIGH is a Renegade Pictures and StoryLabTV Production for HBO, BBC & ARTE; produced and directed by Ivan O'Mahoney & Laura Winter; editors, Richard Guard & Johnny Burke; executive producers, Alan Hayling, Karen O'Connor (for BBC), Hans Robert Eisenhauer (for ARTE); co-producer, Alex Cooke; associate producers, Fallah Al Rubaie & Zaid H. Fahmi (Baghdad). For HBO: consulting editors, Victoria Ford and Geof Bartz, A.C.E.; supervising producer, Lisa Heller; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.

Black Doctors’ Overcome the Odds Story Set to Air on PBS

*Rameck Hunt, Sampson Davis and George Jenkins grew up in a Newark ghetto where only about 3% of the kids went on to college.

And their own prospects probably weren’t any better, given that they were each raised by a single mom in a broken home in a neighborhood blighted by gang violence, drugs, poverty, unemployment and crime.

Yet, this enterprising trio of best friends had the wherewithal to sense that a ticket out of their bleak surroundings might only be an education away.

So, before the streets could gobble up their future, they made a mutual pact, promising to support each other in their shared dream of becoming doctors.

Against the odds, all three succeeded in that quest, Sampson and Rameck, as MDs, and George, as a dentist, and this uplifting bio-pic highlights the considerable hurdles they had to overcome on the road to success. For both of Rameck’s parents were crackheads, and he recounts how he’d pray to God everyday asking that just one of them be able to kick the habit.

Sampson, we learn, did a stint in juvenile prison for armed robbery, and had a sister who was HIV+. And George talks about how the absence of a male role model meant he never learned how to do many things most boys take for granted, such as how to shave or tie a tie.

But ultimately, all three came through with flying colors and, despite their busy medical practices, remain very committed to creating academic opportunities for kids still stuck in the slums. In this regard, the film frequently focuses on the fortunes of Malique, their 12 year-old protégé who also serves as narrator.

Overall, an inspiring affirmation of the power of friendship, courage, determination, hard work and faith to sustain even those seemingly trapped in the most dire of circumstances.

Diretto da Marco Bellocchio.
Regrettably without subtitles, still worth the watch if you don't speak Italian yet you know the history or have a transcript. The film is about a true story, taking place at a time in Italy of high tension between fascist and communist elements known as the anni di piombo (1970s-80s), or years of lead (a time when the CIA was pretty well recognized as supporting neofascist acts like the bombing of Piazza Fontana). The film depicts the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, Italy's former prime minister and leader of the rightwing Christian Democracy party, by members of the Red Brigades terrorist group. The film features a particularly memorable moment of a family joining in singing the old partisan's song, "Fischia il vento."
Seeders: 1
Leeches: 1

If you're going to send young men and women to fight for this nation, tell the truth. That's one of the biggest reasons for the First Amendment. And we haven't been. And so I thought I will tell the story, the real story of the harm in harm's way.

Reviewed by Dennis Schwartz
Bahman Ghobadi ("A Time for Drunken Horses"/"Marooned in Iraq"), a Kurdish director from Iran, in his third feature intends to let the world know something about the Kurdish people and their suffering. "Turtles" is a grim look at the hardships endured by the Kurds living on the Iraqi side of the border with Turkey, in a refugee camp and a small nearby village called Kanibo, just at the onset of America's 2003 second invasion of Iraq. The film stars local nonprofessionals as actors, in a cast made up primarily of children (it's through the children's eyes we view the narrative). It has the distinction of being the first feature made in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Soran Ebrahim stars as Satellite, a personable and resolute 13-year-old boy nicknamed for his obsession with putting up dishes for all the villages in the area. He convinces the village elders to install a satellite dish to pick up news of the coming conflict. ;;Satellite has become the leader of a horde of orphan children living in the refugee camp near the impoverished village, taking on the role of surrogate parent, ;;entrepreneur, translator, and life-saver to the kids who flock around him. Under his command the children, of whom many are missing arms and legs, forage in scrap heaps and fields for unexploded mines, which they sell to locals who then sell it to U.N. personnel for even greater profit.

Satellite finds himself taken with a newly arrived unhappy orphan girl, Agrin (Avaz Latif), who stays in the refugee camp with her armless older brother, Henkov (Hiresh Feysal Rahman), and a little blind boy that might or might not be a relative. Henkov searches the minefields and detonates the mines with his teeth to earn his meager living to support the family and he also has the ability to make predictions, a gift that others value more than he does. Seeing the future does not make him a happy camper (the allegorical theme of the film). ;; Finding some joy in hustling to survive in such chaotic conditions and driven to help the suicidal Agin anyway he can, Satellite brings her water, dives for red fish, and with the little money he saves he purchases for her a gift of an international necklace, but it's all in vain and it seems to have no effect in changing the haunted girl's broken heart (the other allegorical theme, the people are so downtrodden that it's too late for anyone to help them).

The energetic film, with a dark sense of humor, charges into one impending critical situation after another and never pauses to look back to evaluate what took place. Many possible subplots are brought up and just as quickly are forgotten (such as, an Iranian doctor in Iraq searching for an armless boy who makes predictions). It's a messy film but is strangely lyrical and moving, as it paints its ugly picture of a war-torn country that was promised by Bush that this war would make things better. The final shot of the once optimistic Satellite, now on crutches from a minefield explosion, turning his back on the American soldiers passing through his village, the same soldiers he a short time ago welcomed as the saviors of his people, tells us how that optimism has faded. It's a tale of the human condition that can't help reminding you of ;;Dickens' "Oliver Twist.''
