Man in the Sand (1999)

Category: Documentary
Description:
Man in the Sand is a 1999 music documentary that chronicles the collaboration between Billy Bragg and Wilco, which involved the musicians creating new music to accompany lyrics that were written decades earlier by folk singer Woody Guthrie. The project, which was organized by Woody's daughter Nora, spawned two albums: Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998, and Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, released in 2000.

The film begins with Bragg in Guthrie's original hometown of Okemah, Oklahoma, and follows along as Bragg travels to other Guthrie haunts in Texas, California, and finally, New York. Much of the documentary is also spent at the recording sessions in Chicago (December 1997) and Dublin, Ireland (January 1998). Most of the tracks from both albums were recorded at these sessions.
Seeders: 2
Leeches: 1

La Joven Revolucion Hondureña

SYNOPSIS: This documentary "The young Honduran revolution" was made by German-Danish activist Johannes Wilm. While working for the revolutionary Nicaraguan government he snuck across the border to Honduras in early August to document the resistance movement in the neighboring Central American republic, after a military coup had overthrown Leftist president Manuel Zelaya on June 28th. By coincidence he documents how for the first time in nearly thirty years the majority of students rise up against the police in a battle of 3000 students fighting police on the campus of the Autonomous University of Honduras in Tegucigalpa on August 5th. The documentary shows where the student leaders come from, what their analysis of the current situation is, what plans they have for changing it, and what perspective for the future they see both for them personally and for the country at large. It is 90 minutes long and it is made in Spanish with English subtitles. The film has so far been shown in various cities in the south west and in 12 countries in Latin America. It has been featured by a number of Latin American magazines and in the US by the Monthly Review and the Upside Down World site. It will be shown in Los Angeles at the "Human Rights Film Festival" on the 23rd of October, then in Hermosillo, Sonora where it will be shown to journalist students of Kino University on the 27th and to other students at the University of Sonora on the 29th. In Arizona where it will be shown amongst other places at the U of A on the 9th of November and at ASU in Phoenix on the 4th and. At UC Berkley the SDS will present it on the 12th of November.

This is the unknown story of how the Beatles inspired a revolution that helped to destroy the communist system. Leslie Woodhead first met the Beatles in 1962 when he worked on a film in the Liverpool Cavern Club before the world had heard of the Fab Four. Twenty-five years later, when Woodhead began to make films in the Soviet Union, he became aware of how the Beatles legend had soaked into the lives of a generation of Soviet kids -- even though they were barred from playing "Back in the USSR."

Now he has been on a journey to meet the Soviet Beatles generation and to discover how the Fab Four changed their lives. Featuring a bizarre collection of Beatles tribute bands, the film tracks down the stories of how the Cold War was won with music as much as with nuclear missiles.

As the French and British governments discuss how to deal with migrants camped outside Calais, Unreported World travels to the European Union's eastern border, to the illicit crossing points for hundreds of thousands of Afghans making their way to our shores.

Reporter Jenny Kleeman and director Jacob Waite begin their journey on Turkey's north-west coast, just eight miles from Greece and the EU. It's 2.40am and the team come across a people smuggler and 25 migrants - men, women, children and even toddlers, all from Afghanistan.

One of them tells Kleeman that he'd fled Afghanistan aged 13, after his father was taken away by the Taliban, and he'd worked in Iran for four years to earn $4000 to pay the smuggler. The fee covered a small inflatable dinghy, a little food and some basic life jackets. The team watches as all 25 get into the rickety craft and start paddling towards Greece. No one knows how many migrants try to make the eight-mile crossing, or how many drown. It's common for bodies to be found in the seas.
............edit

The team moves on to the port of Patras, from where ferries head off to the rest of Europe. Around the port, migrants are living in camps along railway tracks as they try every day to stow themselves away in lorries. The walls of the port are topped with razor wire, but it's full of bits of cloth torn from the clothes of the migrants who've been trying desperately to get inside.

It's clear that these desperate and determined people will stop at nothing for their chance to start a new life in Europe.

At the Death House Door is a personal intimate look at the death penalty in the state

of Texas through the eyes of Pastor Carroll Pickett, who served 15 years as the

death house chaplain to the infamous “Walls” prison unit in Huntsville. During Pickett’s

remarkable career journey, he presided over 95 executions, including the world’s first

lethal injection. After each execution, Pickett recorded an audiotape account of his

trip to the death chamber.

The film also focuses on the story of CarlosDe Luna, a convict Pickett counseled and

whose execution troubled Pickett more than any other. He firmly believed De Luna

was innocent, and the film tracks the investigative efforts of a team of Chicago

Tribune reporters who have turned up evidence that strongly suggests he was.

Narrated by Elliot Gould, this four-CD set is almost exclusively comprised of the voices of Holocaust survivors. As they tell their stories, the nightmare of the Shoah-the attempted annihilation of all Jews in Europe-unfolds as a living memory of one of mankind's most horrific periods. All these stories are first-hand accounts of Jews from this period. Some, of course, were very young at the time, but many were adults living a "normal" life before the Nazis imposed their will. They are true witnesses, and in various voices--some measured and calm, some choking with emotion--they tell their stories.

We are taken from the time before the war when life was relatively idyllic, through the persecution and eradication of Jews, to the re-establishment of Israel as a permanent Jewish state. There are far too many stark and dramatic anecdotes to single one out, but to hear an American soldier, the only Jew in his company, describing the sight of railroad cars full of skeletons-the only sign of life being a few eyes moving-makes abundantly clear the absolute horror of the Holocaust.

For these survivors, the Shoah is not merely history, but an unforgettable, permanent part of their beings. Through their remarkable voices, we are reminded that this evil was in fact witnessed, and with powerful documents like this, should never be forgotten.
Seeders: 5
Leeches: 2

Taken for a Ride (Jim Klein 1996)

Category: Documentary
Description:
From http://www.newday.com/films/Taken_for_a_Ride.html:
Why Does America Have the Worst Public Transit in the Industrialized World, and the Most Freeways?
Taken for a Ride reveals the tragic and little known story of an auto and oil industry campaign, led by General Motors, to buy and dismantle streetcar lines. Across the nation, tracks were torn up, sometimes overnight, and diesel buses placed on city streets.

The highway lobby then pushed through Congress a vast network of urban freeways that doubled the cost of the Interstates, fueled suburban development, increased auto dependence, and elicited passionate opposition. Seventeen city freeways were stopped by citizens who would become the leading edge of a new environmental movement.

With investigative journalism, vintage archival footage and candid interviews, Taken for a Ride presents a revealing history of our cities in the 20th century that is also a meditation on corporate power, city form, citizen protest and the social and environmental implications of transportation.

Taken for a Ride was funded by the Independent Television Service (ITVS).
Seeders: 4
Leeches: 1

Review: Heart-felt and poignant, this documentary will touch you as very few things can. It will scare, and it will make you think. Though it will give you hope, it will leave you with no easy answers. This documentary does a thorough job of presenting the pending mega-crisis in all of its aspects, and then goes even deeper to probe all of the causes, both technological and social. A careful viewing will leave you stunned, informed, and ready to step off the train and begin dismantling the tracks. Watch it yourself, and then present it to as many people as you can. Your life, and your children’s lives, depend on it.

Category: Misc
Description:
For the past two years the staff of CONELRAD has been engaged in a top secret project, a kind of "musical Manhattan Project," if you will. And not unlike the real Manhattan Project, our labor has resulted in a product that is extremely radioactive. Culturally radioactive, that is.
