HARDtalk episodes

Postby Pangaea on Wed Feb 09, 2011 4:18 pm

I hope somebody can help me to get a couple of HARDtalk episodes. I don't live in the UK, and apparently you can only watch them (or download them) if you live in the UK.

I'm particularly interested in the recent interview with Saeb Erekat and Nabil Sha'ath.

I tried to install the iPlayer Desktop and download the video, but I still got a message that it was available for my region.

Is there a way to get access to these for us who live outside the UK?
I'm sure there are others that would be interesting too, but at least these two are as it relates to the current situation and the release of the Palestine Papers.

Unfortunately, the BBC restricts much of its streaming content to IP addresses within the United Kingdom. One way around this is to pay for a proxy service with a proxy within the UK - that way you would appear to be within the UK to the BBC and it will stream content to you. One service that I have heard is good is overplayvpn at around 10 euros per month.

I'll upload the requested HARDtalk episodes in the next day or two if I can grab them.

Thanks a lot for uploading it (I assume it was you). Great service :)

I sent a mail to Hardtalk, but I haven't gotten a reply yet. Shame they restrict online streaming, but I guess it's to keep costs for servers and such down. Would be great though, as they have some very good programmes.

Unfortunately, I think it is due to copyright issues as the BBC subcontracts much of its programme making, often to small companies run by ex-producers at the BBC! So frequently, the BBC only has the rights for limited duration broadcasts within the UK, despite it paying for the programme to be made. Also, the BBC reserves some programmes for its digital channels that it sells worldwide. Don't know what the situation is with hardtalk, but you can be sure someone will be making a lot of money out of it.

I couldn't grab the other episode you wanted because it has moved into the archive catalogue that has a different streaming structure that I don't know how to rip.

Looks like a military coup in Egypt. The US should be happy.

Thanks for the Erekat one at least. It will be interesting to watch.

So friendly favours in the BBC too. Sounds like a form of corruption to be honest. I did think it was odd material is only available for 1 year online. Guess it's due to these special agreements you mention.

Been glued to the screen today, hoping, like all Egyptians, that Mubarak would step down. He basically showed Egyptians the middle finger instead. Though now I hear he may have handed over a lot of powers to Suleiman, so he is the de facto president. Doubt that, but interesting if true. The US and Israel would then get exactly what they have wanted, and surely what they have been manoeuvring to make happen. Obama offers boilerplate after boilerplate, but we know rhetoric does not fit actions very well and that they do want the system Mubarak has instituted to remain in place. If Suleiman has taken over most powers and sends in the Army to break up the demonstrations, the US will get what they want, the oppressive system in place and "our kinda guy" on top.

Fisk had a very relevant comment, referring to Obama's speech in Cairo. Obama said he stretched out his hand, and hoped people would not clench their fist in return. Now the Egyptian people reached out to Obama, and HE clenched his fist in response by supporting Mubarak and then moving to support Suleiman with their comments of "orderly transition" and so forth (and lots of in the scenes meetings and contact of course).

Disgusting. But not in the least surprising.

I hope Suleiman does not take the reigns - surely the people wouldn't stand for that? Whatever the final outcome, I bet the Americans are worried about losing power at the moment. This has really exposed them. If Egypt goes, who next?

Amazing development today! Egypt is finally free. At least momentarily. Naturally it will be very interesting to see what happens next. Certainly having the Army in charge long-term is not what millions of Egyptians want. But right now it's probably needed to prevent coups or a power vacuum. The fear is of course that it won't be an interim 'government' but after this development I actually think the people of Egypt will not stand for that.

Here's hoping real democracy will be the outcome of all these brave Egyptians.

Managed to get a copy of the other HARDtalk episode that was requested. Convoluted route to obtain it so quality not as good as usual but quite watchable. Note that the first few seconds of the video is blank - should play ok after that.
