1989 marked the collapse of communism in Eastern and Central Europe and an end to a way of life for millions of people. Having lived through extraordinary times, they tell their stories of life behind the Iron Curtain, looking beyond the headlines of spies and surveillance, secret police and political repression, to reveal a rich tapestry of experience.
Firstly, a look at the 'socialist paradise' of communist East Germany.

Twenty years after the Berlin Wall came down, citizens of what was East Germany recall the country of their past for a new BBC TV series, The Lost World of Communism.

Το πρώτο επεισόδιο της σειράς μεταφέρει τον τηλεθεατή tστην Ανατολική Γερμανία, όπου οι κομμουνιστές ισχυρίζονταν πως χτιζόταν ένας «σοσιαλιστικός παράδεισος». Τα αποσπάσματα της παιδικής σειράς «The Sandman» που περιγράφουν της αξίες του σοσιαλισμού δίνουν τη θέση τους στην τερατόμορφη αλήθεια του ισχύοντος καθεστώτος, το οποίο οδήγησε χιλιάδες ανθρώπους στα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης των Ναζί ή στην εξορία τους στη Σιβηρία.
Παρόλα αυτά, η Ανατολική Γερμανία είχε τη δική της ιδιόρρυθμη πλευρά της δεκαετίας του ’60. Ο γυμνισμός και το στριπτίζ είχαν κυρώσεις από το κράτος και δεν είναι λίγοι αυτοί που νοσταλγούν την εποχή αυτή της εγγυημένης εργασίας, της γενικής ευημερίας, της συναδελφικότητας και του σεβασμού του κράτους στις τέχνες και τον πολιτισμό.
