All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace
BBC2 - 23 May 2011
One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Maybe because it is so balanced and so artistically made. Maybe because of dealing with my obsessions cybernetics, democracy, the internet and of course Loooooove. Enjoy!
A series of films by Adam Curtis about how humans have been colonised by the machines they have built. Although we don't realise it, the way we see everything in the world today is through the eyes of the computers.
1/3 - Love and Power
This is the story of the dream that rose up in the 1990s that computers could create a new kind of stable world. They would bring about a new kind global capitalism free of all risk and without the boom and bust of the past. They would also abolish political power and create a new kind of democracy through the internet where millions of individuals would be connected as nodes in cybernetic systems - without hierarchy.
The film tells the story of two perfect worlds. One is the small group of disciples around the novelist Ayn Rand in the 1950s. They saw themselves as a prototype for a future society where everyone could follow their own selfish desires. The other is the global utopia that digital entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley set out to create in the 1990s. Many of them were also disciples of Ayn Rand. They believed that the new computer networks would allow the creation of a society where everyone could follow their own desires, yet there would not be anarchy. They were joined by Alan Greenspan who had also been a disciple of Ayn Rand. He became convinced that the computers were creating a new kind of stable capitalism - "Like a New Planet", he said.
But the dream of stability in both worlds would be torn apart by the two dynamic human forces - love and power.

I only use demonoid and OBT now. This can be seeded to other torrent sites as well. Conspicuously absent from the torrent is EZTV. I have used EZTV in the past but recently I got a reprimand (with cancellation forthcoming for any more infractions) for infractions of getting EZTV content (which premium channel that made the complaint I will only reveal in PM.)
Adam Curtis was my introduction to file sharing content. When The Power of Nightmares came out file sharers (before mass distributed broadband) hand- copied to a transcript the content of TPoN and distributed it that way. Eventually sites displayed the content and elsewhere earlier users of broadband saved and transferred TPoN to disk.
All of Curtis' work is on OBT.

I have been experiencing these three episodes again plus reading some of the comment at the Adam Curtis blog.
Ayn Rand makes me physically uncomfortable and I think Matt Taibi said it best that Rand and her ilk called their way of thinking Objectivism because "greedism" would be too blatant.
Similarly, the "Wholism" as described of the philosophy of a white South African potentate can be called "whiteism."
All this stuff should really make people more angry than it does. But that is due to the veneer of academicism which Curtis uses but seems to despise at the same time. Finally, it is about manipulation of science for the purpose of control rather than study.
