==========

==========

From the Oscar-winning team behind MAN ON WIRE comes the
story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus
of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could
learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a
human child. Following Nim's extraordinary journey through
human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people
he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and
unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human.
What we learn about his true nature - and indeed our own -
is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling.

Thankyou!

"which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child"
-Isn't it amazing that people used to think this way so very recently (and indeed that some still do)? It sounds like somthing Watson or Skinner might have said decades earlier, and not at all like a subject of serious research in my lifetime. How the zeitgeist has changed!

I found it quite alarming, how far the hippyistic nature of the nurturing 'as a human child' element of the study went.

Breast feeding, alcohol, smoking cannabis...
This was considered a normal environment for a pre-pubescent in an empirical study?

How about the focus on his masturbation (wtf?), his supposed 'oedipal complex'?
Nuts.
As for the 'researchers' - can you say; oversexed, undereducated and overstimulated?

It's an eye opener on what I had previously understood as a 'serious study', that's for sure.
