Game Theory (2003)

Laura Nix (co-director)

Genre:
Documentary / Short

Runtime: USA:25 min

The film does an OK job of discussing the ties between modern television and the art of surveillance & control. Not only was The Running Man far ahead of it's time, it exposes the "Bread and Circus" style manipulation that has taken place by the powers that be for ages and continues to take place today. Some will miss the point of the documentaries included with The Running Man Special Edition DVD, but that is only because the truth is painful, and preconceived notions and misguided allegiances die hard.(Bread and Circus: Offerings, such as benefits or entertainments, intended to placate discontent or distract attention from a policy or situation.)

Paul Michael Glaser, Tim Zinnemann, and Rob Cohen in their commentaries, and the speakers in this twenty minute feature run down the Bush administration for the loss of individual freedoms. Glaser says that CNN News is the mouthpiece for the Pentagon and that the news shows make the war look like entertainment. Glaser says that today the Iraq War is romanticized in a similar way his film handled the killings on "The Running Man" show. Rob Cohen talks about the Desert Storm War of Bush's dad and how the coverage it received is called militainment. Cohen says that the newsmen became stars. It was a bizarre merger and in a sense "The Running Man" show is a paradigm of this. Cohen thinks that the "Survivor" reality series is more colorful than his movie.

In the short feature "Lockdown On Main Street" different legal scholars talk about how the George Bush administration is trying to take away people's rights. Examples are given and an old Japanese-American man talks about being locked away in a American concentration camp during World War II. His only crime was being of Japanese descent. He compares what happened to him to what is happening to citizens of Arabic descent with the Bush administration.
