A surprisingly balanced portrayl of the French and Algierian sentiment in one of the bloodiest colonial post-WWII conflicts. The Italian filmmaker, Gillo Pontecorvo, was contacted by the head of the Algierian FLN, Jacef Saadi, after the French left in 1962 and he was released from prison. Pontecorvo used only one professional actor in the whole film yet the acting is incredibly realistic and even the special effects aren't too bad. The inevitable struggle between imperialism and self-determination, state versus poor man's terrorism, proves to be pertinent in our times over and over again. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058946/ http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig3/beary4.html for more info (beware of the "free"marketerism)
