Now at 60 years old. The AK-47 kills 250,000 people every year. It is cheap, you can find it everywhere, it has changed the face of war and has allowed ragtag militias to challenge the armies of major powers. Josh Rushing investigates the real weapon of mass destruction. It is the most prolific small arm of the 2nd half of the 20th century.

This documentary examines its history around the world as the weapon of choice for its durability, reliability and cheapness. Interviews with the inventor, gun runners, child soldiers along with comparisons to M-16 and its use in subversion just about everywhere.

There are as many as 100 million AK-47s in the world. At the center of modern armed conflict, the weapons have also been glorified in rap music, gangster films and on national flags. In a new book, author Larry Kahaner traces the weapon's role in modern culture.
