An extraordinarily powerful and original film, THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK exposes the tragedy taking place in Darfur as seen through the eyes of an American witness and who has since returned to the US to take action to stop it. Using the exclusive photographs and first hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle, THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK takes the viewer on an emotionally charged journey into the heart of Darfur, Sudan, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of its black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed. Sundberg and Stern's film allows us to witness Steidle's transformation from soldier to observer to witness and, finally, to passionate activist and moral hero.

This documentary movie is very unsettling and really ought to be seen by everyone. It chronicles the journey of an American Marine Captain from International Military Observer to peace activist who is bringing incontrovertible photographic evidence of the cold-blooded and grisly murder in Darfur of black African Christian civilians by government forces and militias (Janjaweed = devils on horseback) affiliated with the Arab Muslim government of Sudan to the attention of the world. You've got to have a lot of respect for this man but I get the sense that he's shouting into the wind. Nothing is being done about Darfur and the slaughter continues unabated.

Today on NPR Umberto Eco said that if the Internet had been around during the Third Reich, there wouldn't have been a holocaust. I'm not so sure. Today, we have the Internet, and a lot of people know about Darfur, not the least through this movie. Yet, nothing much changes in Darfur. Not to mention the genocide that's going on in the Eastern Congo that hardly anyone knows about.
