The British police regard them as dangerous extremists; they see themselves as fighters for a noble cause.
The Animal Liberation Front has targeted hundreds of research laboratories, farms and individuals associated, they say, with the abuse of animals.
Keith Mann spent seven and a half years in prison for his role in ALF operations.
Stephen Sackur asks if direct action has brought his cause into disrepute?

thanks, just watched this. The host is an arrogant prick, but Keith Mann does a good job.

Thanks for the up! I was disappointed that Keith fell prey to so many of the host's simplistic arguments. While I appreciate Keith's calm, collected rebuttals, I wish he would have called out the host on his frequent, over-generalized/inflamatory arguments. (and proudly claimed his alienation from society)
"but Keith, you live in a democracy"
Exactly. . .
Remember friends, in any argument "get there first with the most" and never allow the capitalist to frame the terms of debate.

Ugh ALF what a joke. There are several real issues happening in the world but Keith Mann struggles against animal testing? lets place to the side all the medical benefits that have come as a result of it. Lets take a look at the Disney fairly tale of a world they are striving for. They want full animal rights. this is the only " Rights movement" where the beneficiaries can not participate or understand what it would means.
There are real issues in the world with people being murdered and raped everyday. For the animal rights groups to even begin to place themselves on the same level as real rights groups is an insult. Middle class spoiled kids that where traumatized by Bambi need to open their eyes.
And their methods like firebombing do more to hurt their position than anything else. and digging up grave dont either.

You make some good points laughingman but, while not an animal rights advocate myself, I still support their struggle for two reasons. One, if we (collectively, societally if you will) can grant 'rights' (or even respect) to other species, it would be damn hard to deny those rights to ANY human. If you can't objectify a tree, how could you exploit a person? Two, these folks in Britain are taking up a struggle that is close to their homes and their hearts. This is a struggle that brings them great inspiration and energy and they happen to be close enough to actually cause damage to the ruthless systems of domination that perpetuate animal cruelty. Sure, people in other countries (and very well their own) are suffering and oppressed, but this is not to say that the ALF's struggle is without value.
I think that there are many many systems of domination and we should support those who feel inspired to attack any of them in ways that are inspiring to them. Nothing will kill a struggle faster than one that has sprung from obligation and guilt. With this in mind, I think it also important to support a diversity of tactics and refrain from condemning those whose methods aren't ones you'd choose in the mass media. There's a really inspiring coalition being built along these principles in preparation for the republican national convention in september '08. Check it out here: http://www.rncwelcomingcommittee.org/135/stp-principles/
To be sure, I don't support digging up graves, but the beautiful thing about the ALF is that it's made of autonomous cells with no governing body. Thus, Kieth could have simply said that he supports the ALF's ends without always endorsing each cell's means.
