People and Struggle of the Fourth World War
Under president Hugo Chavez, Venezuela is providing the world with a concrete example of an alternative to neoliberal capitalism. From a public uprising in 1989 to the attempted coup against Chavez, Venezuela Bolivariana presents a view of history that Americans are rarely exposed to. In a series of interviews, Venezuelans discuss their revolution and it's programs regarding human rights, the environment, women's rights, indigenous people's rights and the resistance to Venezuela's ruling elite, and American military hegemony. This film is a terrific example of independent media from Latin America.
Some comments:
Listen closely as ordinary Venezuelans explain why the two-party system much like our own that they had before Chavez, served the interest of the corporations instead of the people. Let students, the elderly, workers, female leaders, and the poor tell you why representative democracy isn't democracy at all, and why only participatory democracy is worthy of the name. Watch as farmers and fishermen show you what their new Constitution has done for them and why they take so much pride in it. Let the wounded survivors and the families of the dead explain why they were willing to fight and why they'll do it again and again if need be. Listen to the rich try to justify their greed and elitism. And then listen to Venezuelans explain how they knew that their corporate-controlled media was lying to them. They also had an unelected President take office, but unlike us, they refused to accept it. They surrounded the building and he and his corrupt cronies were forced to flee. I don't know if an anti-corporate revolution is possible in the U.S. But as their Interior Ministor explains, we only have one planet. The Venezuelans know that this planet belongs to us, not to the corporations who want only to pollute and despoil it for profit. The fact that this revolution was successful, and is gaining more and more allies every day, should give us hope. We also have a right to the necessities of life, to food, shelter, jobs, and health care. We also have a right to a decent education for us and for our children. Perhaps some day we too will stand up for our rights. Viva Chavez! - MS
