Contents:

**** Disc One ****
1.1 YEAR ZERO - THE SILENT DEATH OF CAMBODIA [1979]
- At the time of its release, Year Zero was for many the first glimpse of a harrowing injustice that had been played out with little fanfare. John Pilger lays bare the entire chain of events, from the removal of King Norodom Sihanouk to ensuing famine and genocide under the Khmer Rouge. The film is both disturbing and poignant, a sobering portrait of Cambodia's recent history.

1.2 NICARAGUA - A NATION'S RIGHT TO SURVIVE [1983]
- In 1979, the Sandinistas won a popular revolution in Nicaragua, putting an end to decades of the corrupt US-backed Somoza dictatorship. They based their reformist ideology on that of the English Co-operative Movement, but was to prove too ‘radical’ for the Reagan administration.

In this film, Pilger describes the achievements of the Sandinistas and their "threat of a good example".

1.3 BURP! PEPSI V COKE IN THE ICE COLD WAR [1984]
- Burp! Pepsi v Coke in The Ice Cold War looks at the worldwide struggle for soft drink supremacy by the Coca Cola Company, illuminating the overwhelming power of multinational corporations over poorer countries and their struggling economies.

**** Disc Two ****

2.1 VIETNAM - THE QUIET MUTINY [1970]
- Filmed at Camp Snuffy in 1970, The Quiet Mutiny presents a character study of the common soldier during the Vietnam War, revealing for the first time the shifting morale and open rebellion of Western troops.

2.2 DEATH OF A NATION - THE TIMOR CONSPIRACY [1994]
- The exposure of another terrible human tragedy to which governments turned a blind eye, East Timor - a tiny country off the northern tip of Australia - is ruled by bloodshed and fear. More than 200,000 people were wiped out by neighbouring Indonesia. Since East Timor's liberation in 1999, this film's contribution has been recognised worldwide. Won the Gold Award in the 'Political/International Issues category' (Film & Video Production division) at Worldfest-Houston, 1994; Certificate for Creative Excellence (third place) in the category of 'Documentary, Current Events, Special Events', at the U.S. Film & Video Festival in Chicago, 1994; Silver Plaque for 'Social/Political Documentary (National) category' at the Chicago International Film Festival, 1994; Audience Award for Best Documentary at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam, 1994; Certificate of Merit in the category of 'Documentary - Disputed Lands', Golden Gate Awards, San Francisco, 1995.

2.3 INSIDE BURMA - LAND OF FEAR [1996, updated 1998]
- John Pilger and David Munro go undercover in one of the world's most isolated, and extraordinary countries, Burma, which Amnesty International calls 'a prison without bars'. They discover slave labour preparing for tourism and foreign investment. International Actual Award for Risk Journalism, Barcelona, Spain, 1996; Bronze Plaque in the category of 'Social Issues - International Relations', The Chris Awards, Ohio, 1996; Gold Special Jury Award, 'Film & Video Production division', WorldFest-Charleston, 1996; Award for Best Factual Programme, RTS Midland Centre Awards, Birmingham, 1996; Gold Apple in the category 'Politics: Social organisations in other lands', National Educational Media Network Film & Video Competition at The 1997 NEMN Apple Awards, Oakland, California, 1997; the updated version won a Gold Special Jury Award in the 'Film & Video Production division', WorldFest-Houston, 1999.

2.4 WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA [1999]
- With the run-up to the Sydney Olympics, John Pilger and Alan Lowery take a look at what's behind the curtain of hype and glamour. Australia's Aborigines are still exculded, impoverished and mistreated - while their part in the brilliant history of Australia's sports successes goes virtually unrecognized. Won the Gold Medal in the 'National/International Affairs category' of the 1999 New York Festivals TV Programming & Promotion competition, 2000; Gold Award in the Television Documentary & Information Programmes: 'Political/International Issues category' of WorldFest-Flagstaff, 1999.

**** Disc Three ****

3.1 PAYING THE PRICE - KILLING THE CHILDREN OF IRAQ [2000]
- John Pilger and Alan Lowery travel to Iraq with Denis Halliday, a former assistant secretary-general of the United Nations who resigned over what he called the "immoral policy" of economic sanctions. There they find a suffering nation held hostage to the compliance of a dictator, Saddam Hussein, over whom they have no control.

3.2 PALESTINE IS STILL THE ISSUE [2002]
- John Pilger returns to the Occupied Teritories of the West Bank and Gaza where he filmed a documentary with the same title, about the same issues, in 1974. He finds the basic problems unchanged: a desperate, destitute people whose homeland is illegally occupied by the world's fourth biggest military power. He hears extraordinary stories from Palestinians, though most of his interviews are with Israelis whose voices are seldom heard, including the remarkable witness of a man who lost his daughter in a suicide bombing. This film was nominated for a BAFTA, a British Academy Award.

3.3 BREAKING THE SILENCE - TRUTH AND LIES IN THE WAR ON TERROR [2003]
- This film, set in Afghanistan, Iraq and Washington, looks at President Bush's 'war on terror' and the 'liberation' of countries where bloodshed and repression continue. In Afghanistan, Pilger investigates the claim that life has improved for the women of Afghanistan now that the Taliban have gone. In Washington, he interviews leading American officials, 'neo-cons' in the Bush regime. John Bolton, of the State Department, now the US Ambassador to the United Nations, says he regards the figure of 10,000 civilian deaths in Iraq as 'quite low'. Breaking the Silencewon a number of awards, and was nominated for a BAFTA, a British Academy Award.

**** Disc Four ****

4.1 STEALING A NATION [2004]
- Pilger tells a story literally 'hidden from history'. In the 1960s and 70s, British governments, conspiring with American officials, tricked into leaving, then expelled the entire population of the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean. The aim was to give the principal island of this Crown Colony, Diego Garcia, to the Americans who wanted it as a major military base. Indeed, from Diego Garcia US planes have since bombed Afghanistan and Iraq. The story is told by islanders who were dumped in the slums of Mauritius and in the words of the British officials who left a 'paper trail' of what the International Criminal Court now describes as 'a crime against humanity' . In March 2005, 'Stealing a Nation' was awarded Britain's most prestigous documentary prize - the Royal Television Society Award.

4.2 INTERVIEW AT HAY FESTIVAL [2006]
- An interview with Anthony Hayward about Pilger's work and the media in general, including a Q&A session.
