Filmed over a period of three years, Unwinking Gaze: the Inside Story of the Dalai Lama's Struggle for Tibet offers viewers a unique, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the recent working life and political drama surrounding the Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhists' spiritual leader and renowned world icon.

The film begins during the Dalai Lama's visit to Canada in 2006. While thousands of Canadian followers gather to hear the Dalai Lama speak at his public events, in the corridors of power in Ottawa he seeks the support of Canadian political leaders to help raise the question of human rights and the rights of Tibet when dealing with their Chinese counterparts.

Director Joshua Dugdale had exceptional access to the Dalai Lama and in the documentary is able to reveal the daily challenges of the religious leader as he tries to strike a balance between his Buddhist vows and the real politic needed to placate China. Even within the inner circle of the Dalai Lama's closest advisers and diplomats, viewers will see there are often frustrations and differences of opinion on how to reach a peaceful resolution with China.
