The Culture is a fictional anarchist society created by acclaimed Scottish writer Iain M. Banks and described by him in several of his novels and shorter fictions. The Culture is characterised by being a post scarcity society (meaning that its advanced technologies provide practically limitless material wealth and comforts for everyone for free, having all but abolished the concept of possessions), by having overcome almost all physical constraints on life (including disease and death) and by being an almost totally egalitarian, stable society without the use of any form of force or compulsion, except where necessary to protect others.

In the post scarcity society did they find a black matter energy machine in a crashed alien spacecraft in the Antarctic?

You had me going there for a minute until I hit that part.

Iain Banks is a master. The above description doesn't do "The Culture" justice.

Ok, ok. I was puzzled by the unlimited energy thing.

What I've seen in bookstores hasn't given me much enthusiasm for science fiction in recent years:

Fantasies, vampire stories and then more of it year after year.

The material I get here on OBT such as The Book
That Shook The World, Fourth World War and Adam Curtis everything is more interesting than the fiction that's out.
