If you follow the instructions laid down in the book and shown in the videos, that is use sawdust in the bucket after each time you do the 'deed' and use cover material (straw) adequately over the heap itself, there is no smell at all.
As for harrasment, no one can harrass if you keep this on the downlow. Most humanure practitioners don't advertise what they are doing.
As for contamination, I believe it is chapter 6 or 7 of the book. Very thoroughly gets into types of bacteria, not just e.coli, and pathogens that are dangerous to humans. It explains how to monitor the thermophilic activation so that after X amount of days at Y temperature you can be sure all pathogens are destroyed. Also, you can have certain parts of the pile, once it has gone through the composting cycle and cured, can have different parts of it sent to be tested for pathogens.
AND, you don't neccessarily have to use it as fertilizer. This model in itself transmutes waste back into soil. That doesn't mean you must use it on your veggie patch.
