Dr. Azzam Tamimi defending Hamas on HARDtalk (BBC 2008)
In a HARDtalk interview first broadcast on 22 January 2008, Jonathan Charles talks to Dr Azzam
Tamimi, Director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought.
Israel is tightening the noose around the neck of Gaza, cutting off electricity and plunging
much of the Strip into darkness.
The Israeli Prime Minister is adamant that the Palestinian territory will get the bare minimum
as long as Hamas remains in charge.
Dr Azzam Tamimi is a Palestinian-born academic, a supporter of Hamas and the author of a book
on the group.
Can he see a way forward out of the current gloom?
(This is a very unusual interview in that a hard core supporter for Hamas gets a chance to
develop his view on the middle-east conflict. This is of course a quite different perspective
on the situation than the one usually expressed in mainstream media, so no matter one’s
opinion on the issue it’s very interesting to hear the other side of the story.)
