Cambridge, MA - Michael Albert of Z Magazine and Prof. Noam Chomsky of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology spoke to an audience of over 200 at a panel on Building a Society from Below in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States. They were joined by Gregory Wilpert of Venezuela Analysis and Julio Chávez, former mayor of the Torres municipality of Venezuela. The event was sponsored by the Boston and New York Consulates of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

"The people's protagonist role in the construction of a new society will be debated in the City of Boston, this coming Thursday, March 19th, at the historic Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT. The event titled: "Building a Society from Below" will cover topics such as communal power, participatory budgeting, participatory economics, and communal territories.

This event has been organized by the Consulates of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Boston and New York. Renown intellectuals and political activists Noam Chomsky and Michael Albert will participate, and will be joined by Julio Chávez; former Mayor of the Torres Municipality in the State of Lara and current Member of the Presidential Commission for Communal Power.

Julio Chávez will speak about the experience of the Torres Municipality, which is the first in the country to successfully carry out a Municipal Constituent Assembly, as well as, to transfer the power to the organized community who now manage a 100% of the municipal budget. Through simple and accessible methodology, members of the community now decide how much of the budget and for what purposes the public moneys is to be used. This Municipality is also a pioneer in the formation of communal territories. The Torres experience was recently collected in the book "Transferring Power to the People", by Martha Harnecker.

Michael Albert, Ph.D. is an economist, writer, co-founder of Z Magazine and South End Press., and has completed over 16 works, including "Parecon: Life After Capitalism". Mr. Albert will speak about Participatory Economics (Parecon) as a tool for transferring power to the people.

Noam Chomsky, is known as the father of modern linguistics. This noted intellectual and political dissident has authored books such as: "Hegemony or Survival: America’s Quest for Global Dominance". Mr. Chomsky will offer his analysis and opinions regarding these significant topics, and the change processes that are unraveling in Latin America.
