SCREENSHOTS This informative and sometimes disturbing documentary was screened on the BBC on 7th August 2005 and released the following day on DVD.
As with any BBC documentary it is beautifully made with great regard to the survivors and veterans involved, showing compassion.
The Documentary clearly sets out to put both sides of the story using first hand accounts and dazzling special effects.
The US had a genuine belief they were doing right by dropping the first bomb on Hiroshima, in an attempt to end the war, knowing the Japanese would stop at nothing, resulting in a loss of life far in advance of anything they believed both bombs would cause.
You are left with the shocking fact that because of the resulting radiation, the aftermath is still very real today some 60 years on, and did it really cut the loss of life after all?
Only initially tested days earlier, and very much still an experiment, to the extent that the crew of the Enola Gay had to improvise the bomb trigger to avoid taking off with the bomb fully armed. The use of two other B29's to record as much information as possible was another shocking revelation to me.
This DVD is a good starting point for anyone wanting to begin research into the Japanese involvement during WW2, Ironically because it shows their total collapse and surrender, after the dropping of the second bomb on Nagasaki.
A very thought provoking watch....

Though I don't doubt this is a well made film, I would caution viewers that, due to the comments of the poster, it may simply be an espousing of the western-friendly narrative. We should not forget that the Americans (with British assistance) cracked the Japanese encryption methods in April of 1942. We should also not forget that, as eloquently depicted in The Fog of War (McNamara's film), Japan was all but entirely decimated by American firebombing campaigns by 1945. Lastly, we should not forget the peculiar treatment of the atomic attacks by the Americans as 'experiments' (explained in detail by John Pilger in The Truth Game).

Again, this film is probably a fine information addition to one's active study of nuclear weapons and the atomic attacks on Japan, but should not be taken as a sole, stand alone truth.

In conclusion, I would recommend the following:
John Pilger's Truth Game
HBOs White Light, Black Rain
Peter Watkins' The War Game
The BBCs 1983: The Brink of Apocalypse
& the Propaganda-laden US Newsreel - The Tale of Two Cities

The description tells it all:

"The US had a genuine belief they were doing right by dropping the first bomb on Hiroshima, in an attempt to end the war, knowing the Japanese would stop at nothing"

That's just the old party line: oh, the tragedy, but we HAD to do it.

I must dis agree with your comment jacqueslaroche, this a stunning and heart wrenching look at the innocent victims of the war.I viewed this film some 2 years ago and saw no sign of pro western propaganda, get over it.The facts are that the west didn't start this war,but we did finish it.The only hope I have is that the dropping of these 2 bombs has stopped any further thought of nuclear conflict being survivable.

safn1949: I sympathize with the sub-par level of depth reading, logical reasoning and critical thinking skills your past (or present) schooling has taught you (or rather, failed to). Lets go over this slowly so you can understand:

Firstly, I said "Though I don't doubt this is a well made film, I would caution viewers that, due to the comments of the poster, it may simply be an espousing of the western-friendly narrative."
Take note of the clauses 'though I don't doubt', 'due to the comments of the poster' and 'it MAY' (added emphasis on the 'may'). The first clause should lead you to the understanding that I have not viewed the film and am giving it the benefit of the doubt, while the second should gracefully clarify the motivations of my comment, and the third should crystallize my position - namely that I am not making a definite statement.

Now that that is out of the way, let me remind you that I made three substantial claims in my first paragraph that you didn't even bother to internalize.

Next, lets analyze the second paragraph: "Again, this film is probably a fine information addition to one's active study of nuclear weapons and the atomic attacks on Japan, but should not be taken as a sole, stand alone truth." Do I even need to clarify? Emphasis on "probably a fine information addition" and "should not be taken as a sole, stand alone truth" should be enough for a rational thinking being which I would trust you are.

Basically, the understanding we all need to cultivate within ourselves is that events occuring in history are multifaceted and, as such, should be treated with the scrutiny of careful study rather than haphazard qualifying statements such as your "The only hope I have is that the dropping of these 2 bombs has stopped any further thought of nuclear conflict being survivable" (which it clearly has not, evidenced by the wanton proliferation that has taken place in a myriad of countries since the attacks).

Following this guiding principle of careful study, I will again suggest (since you probably didn't read or comprehend it the first time):

"In conclusion, I would recommend the following:
John Pilger's Truth Game
HBOs White Light, Black Rain
Peter Watkins' The War Game
The BBCs 1983: The Brink of Apocalypse
& the Propaganda-laden US Newsreel - The Tale of Two Cities"

Logic. Use it.

I see that you obviously were not taught any manners as a child and so you tend to react with the arrogance shown above. My comment was polite and presented my viewpoint. My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it...nothing,as it is just my opinion.

Learn some manners
