I would listen to zizek ramble at any time really. The guy is both insightful and amusing. But i'm always kind of, reminded, skeptical, befuddled, by this weird sense that Zizek, and the post-post modern post-marxist transcendental-feminist alt-deconstructionist scene, if you will, is haunted by the spectre of capitalist-fatalism. This sense that, well the world is going to shit (ecology for instance), and so it's everyman for himself in this environment -- I 'got mine' entertaining academic circles, go get yours -- is in a way, completely resigned to the status quo. It almost says: material liberation is a silly historical notion, your only hope of change is in your own metaphysics.
I really dislike this to a certain extent. It seems to me that the problem is as real as ever and the more you avoid it, the more you are complicit. Even if you can justify it by warping your value system into opposites or nihilism, it doesn't change any of the conditions of the negative present-experience of exploitation.
I won't label Zizek enemy propaganda, but I think he secretly wishes to live out a Horatio Alger myth. He even says that the fountainhead is the greatest of american movies, of course there is the critical analyst's perspective, but there is something else also. Watch with caution.
